The Cavern WakesSubterranean cavern beneath Oakhaven
The Cavern Wakes

The floor bucks under Yllamaris, and the crimson runes blast white-hot. Stone seams split wider, grinding like jaws. Above, the ceiling lowers, not falling but flexing.

The cavern walls slide apart in a wet, heaving lurch. A slit of darkness opens ahead, and breath, hot and rancid, rolls out from within the rock.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Hold still, or it wakes angry.

A hooded figure drops from a ledge into the flare, boots skidding across the runes. Their lantern is gone, their hands bare, and a hooked dagger gleams at their hip.

You have been tugging at its tether all night. Now it knows your scent.

The beast stirs again. Dust showers from a ribbed arch overhead, and the widening gap ahead offers the only clear path out.

Run if you want, Half-elf. I am only here to make sure it follows you first.

The Cavern Wakes
Yllamaris

Yllamaris

Yllamaris gives a dry chuckle. “So I am in the belly of the beast, and it sleeps. Will you stop me from helping it reach the next life with my blade?”

The Stranger

The Stranger

The Stranger bares their teeth in a thin, humorless grin. “No. I mean to see where your blade lands.”

Yllamaris drives forward through the tremor, boots skidding over the rune-lit stone. The purple runes blaze along his sword as he angles past the Stranger and toward the pulsing dark ahead.

The opening yawns wider. For one brutal heartbeat, a vast, half-seen shape fills the tunnel beyond it, all bone ridges and twitching flesh, its skull sunk low inside the cavern’s living walls.

Yllamaris finds the beast’s head and brings the blade down in a clean, killing arc. Light snaps through the wound, and the thing’s heaving motion jerks hard before going slack.

A shudder races through the chamber. The walls convulse, then loosen, and the hot breath turns to a ragged sigh as the beast fails into stillness. Dust pours from the arches like pale rain.

The Stranger

The Stranger

The Stranger looks from the quieting maw to Yllamaris. “Well struck. Now move, before this place decides to collapse around you for sport.”
