The smell of roasting mutton hangs heavy over the pasture, clashing with the metallic tang of ozone. The village festival at Oakhaven is in tatters, overturned trestle tables spilling ale into the churned grass.
(Stepping forward, his dented plate armor groaning with every movement.) You, hooded wanderer. The scouts said the woods would vomit up something cursed, but I did not expect a boy.

Yllamaris
He carries the weight of a hundred battles in his stance. If I draw my steel, the runes will mark me as a warlock, but if I stay my hand, the villagers will lynch me for the blight spreading across their crops.
A sudden, rhythmic thrumming vibrates through the ground. The sheep huddle against the fence line, bleating in terror as the shadows beneath the nearby hedge begin to ripple and rise like black smoke. Bram grips the hilt of his massive, rusted longsword, his knuckles white.

Bram
Whatever you are, pick up a shovel or a sword. The shadows have found their way to the light.

Survive the shadow attack
“In my mind - 'even if I cast spells they'll know... Oh well.'”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Yllamaris
The villagers will eventually burn me for what I am, so I might as well ensure I survive the night to face that judgment.

Yllamaris
Keep your eyes on the shadows, shepherd. If I am to be a monster, I shall be the one that keeps you alive.
Yllamaris draws his blade. As the steel clears the scabbard, brilliant purple runes ignite along the length of the metal, bathing the churned grass in an eerie, violet glow. The shadows recoil from the light, screeching like tearing silk. Yllamaris lunges forward, his movements fluid and unnatural, carving a luminous arc through the rising wall of darkness. The encroaching smoke dissipates under the strikes, leaving the air smelling of ozone and burnt embers.
(Staring, his eyes wide with a mixture of relief and dawning horror.) Gods preserve us, you wield the very void you fight.
The shadows press in harder, emboldened by the display, swirling into a singular, towering mass of darkness that looms directly over the fence line.
“"they come for me... Flee... I'll distract them and take them away..."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Yllamaris
They come for me, Bram. Flee now, while I pull this malice away from the pasture.
Yllamaris pivots on his heel, his cloak snapping like a dark wing as he cuts a wider, searing path through the suffocating gloom. He channels the violet energy of his blade into a frantic, pulsing flare, forcing the towering mass of shadows to shriek in psychic agony. He sprints toward the dense thicket at the edge of the woods, intentionally dragging the concentrated storm of void-energy behind him like a tethered tempest.

Yllamaris
If they want to feast on the cursed, let them choke on my blade.

Bram
You fool, you cannot outrun a shadow!
Bram watches, hand frozen mid-reach, as Yllamaris dives into the encroaching treeline, drawing the entirety of the dark swarm away from the panicked livestock.
