Cryos
Cryos

Crystalious reaches his mountain cabin as Cryos crashes through the roof, scattering beams and snow before landing hard in the drifts, wounded but alive.

The white wyvern’s soft-cyan snowflake pattern is streaked with blood. He lifts his head, then looks past Crystalious toward the hunters below.

Far down the slope, the hunters drag Crystalious’s older sister and drive her dragon toward a narrow pass, their dark shapes shrinking through the snowfall.

Above that pass, old ice groans across the cliffs. Cracks race through the frozen shelf, and loose slabs begin tumbling into the ravine.

The pass is filling with falling ice.

Cryos struggles upright, one wing held close. He fixes Crystalious with an urgent stare, then turns toward the trapped figures and cries into the storm.

The cabin creaks around them, its broken roof exposing the white sky. Below, the hunters vanish briefly behind a curtain of snow and ice.

Crystalious drops beside Cryos in the snow and presses cloth against the wyvern’s wounded flank. Blood stains his claws as he works beneath the storm.

He binds the torn flesh with strips from a fallen roof beam’s canvas lining, tightening each wrap until the bleeding slows and the wing rests more securely.

Cryos

Cryos

Rrhaaa...

Cryos lowers his head against Crystalious’s shoulder, his breath warm through the cold. The soft-cyan snowflake pattern emerges cleanly where the blood is wiped away.

The effort costs Crystalious dearly: a jagged splinter from the wrecked roof bites into his palm, opening a shallow cut beside the blue flame tattoo.

Cryos

Cryos

The pass... them.

Cryos steadies on three legs, wounded wing bound but usable enough to shelter his body. Below, ice continues settling through the ravine, and the hunters remain out of sight.

Crystalious leaves Cryos beneath the cabin’s broken eave and crosses the wreckage, snow sifting through the exposed rafters as the ravine settles below.

His sword lies where the roof beam struck, half-buried in splinters. He frees the blade, then lifts his shield from beneath a fallen table.

crystalious

The bindings hold, but the wing is still weak.

A jagged nail tears across Crystalious’s sleeve and scratches his forearm as he straps the shield on. He secures the sword at his side despite the fresh sting.

Cryos

Cryos

Rrha. Follow them. Now.

Crystalious returns to Cryos armed and ready, the blue flame tattoo visible beside the cut in his palm. Below, the hunters’ trail emerges through settling snow.

Cryos spreads his sound wing for balance and steps toward the slope. The narrow pass remains choked with ice, but a steep path along the ridge is clear enough to follow.

Crystalious follows the hunters’ trail along the ridge, keeping Cryos behind the broken cabin and using snow-laden stone to mask his approach.

The path narrows above the ravine. Each careful step sends small pebbles skittering down the slope, and the wind carries the sound farther than expected.

The ridge is more exposed than it looked from the cabin.

Cryos

Rrha... slow. They hear the mountain.

Ahead, the hunters halt near a bend. One dark figure turns toward the ridge as loose stones clatter below Crystalious, leaving him visible against the snow.

The hunters do not approach, but their trail angles sharply into a cleft beneath the cliffs. Pursuing from here would expose Crystalious and Cryos to the pass below.

crystalious leaves Mountain ridge behind and arrives at the region’s main drake warden stronghold.

The region’s main drake warden stronghold crowns the mountain in black stone and pale timber, its terraces cut directly into the cliff. Great roosts ring the walls, and bells murmur beneath the wind.

Crystalious reaches the outer gate as wardens hurry between steaming kennels and snowbound watchfires. Above the entrance, carved dragon wings frame the warden flame.

crystalious

crystalious

This is where the ridge trail leads, and where the hunters’ movements will be known.

A broad-shouldered young adult woman steps from the gatehouse, an elf with copper-brown skin, braided black hair, and a green cloak clasped over layered scale armor. One antler-shaped scar marks her cheek.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

Dragon warden. You arrived under storm cover, carrying a drawn blade and no escort. State your name and purpose.

Before the gate can close, a lookout bell rings twice from the western tower. A breathless boy points toward the lower passes, where a hunter’s black pennant has appeared.

The hunters are here already. Come inside, and tell me whether the white wyvern is wounded. If he is yours, the stronghold will shelter him.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

Then bring him inside. The kennels have healers, warmth, and space enough for a wyvern of his size.

Maelis raises one armored hand, and the gate wardens lower their spears. The boy lookout hurries toward the inner terraces, shouting for the drake-healers.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

What struck him, and where did you encounter the hunters? Their pennant below means this is no passing raid.

Cryos gives a strained rumble and presses his shoulder against Crystalious as they cross the threshold. Warm steam rolls from the kennels, carrying the scents of herbs and hay.

“i head out to meet the scouting party”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Crystalious leaves the kennel and crosses the stronghold’s steaming terraces toward the western gate. Behind him, Cryos gives a low, uneasy rumble but remains grounded beside the brazier.

Snow lashes through the gate as Maelis joins him, cloak snapping in the wind. Three scouts, two young adult women and a young adult man, all human with sturdy builds and weathered faces, bundled in dark blue parkas and gray snow trousers; their captain wears a red scarf wait beyond the watchfires with ropes, climbing hooks, and covered lanterns.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

You made good time. The scouting party is ready, and the western ridge is still passable.

Crystalious steps into the storm and reaches the scouts at the gatehouse’s outer marker stones. Their captain lowers a map board between them, already marked with the cleft and ravine.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

Your knowledge puts you at the front. Show them where the hunters left the ridge, and we will follow your trail down.

As Crystalious grips the map’s edge, the cut beside his blue flame tattoo splits beneath its bandage. Blood beads across his palm, and a scout notices before he can close his hand.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

That hand needs wrapping, but it will not delay us. Mark the route now, before the snowfall erases what remains.

“we folow the ridge to the new wrecked cabin”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Survival, rolled +0)

Crystalious leads Maelis and the scouts along the western ridge, following the hunters’ fading tracks through wind-packed snow and around the cliff’s exposed shoulder.

The trail descends to a second cabin, wrecked beneath a collapsed shelf of ice. Broken walls gape across the slope, with dark footprints entering the ruins.

crystalious

That second sound carried. If the hunters were listening, they know we are here. Move now, before the trail cools.

“we folow the trail and come to clearing with the corpse of a fallen dragon at its center”

FAILURE (Mediocre Survival, rolled +0)

Crystalious follows the overlapping tracks into the ravine, with Maelis and the scouts moving low behind him. The trail bends beneath a stone arch and opens into a broad, wind-scoured clearing.

At its center lies a fallen dragon, enormous and motionless, its dark scales dulled by frost. Broken harness rings and torn leather surround the body, but no hunters remain in sight.

Scout Captain

Scout Captain

Hold. The trail ends here, but the snow tells us they did not leave by the way we came.

Cryos stops short, neck lowered toward the corpse. His breath trembles over the dragon’s still muzzle, and his good wing shifts protectively toward Crystalious.

Warden Maelis

Warden Maelis

They used this clearing as a transfer point. Look beyond the body, toward the eastern stones. Something heavy was dragged uphill.

The scouts fan out, but fresh powder collapses beneath one woman’s boot. A concealed hollow opens beside the corpse, swallowing a lantern and exposing a narrow stair cut into the rock.
