The bronze door opens onto a wind-carved terrace. Beyond its rim, ancient waymarks descend through ravines toward the western peaks, their stones glowing beneath drifting snow.

A crystal route-table rises from the terrace floor, shaping a map in pale light. Several safe stopping places appear, including the first free settlement beside a blue river.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

The route is lawful and watched by old stones. I will witness your departure and name a guide, should you wish one for the descent.

Penelope

Penelope

The settlement lies beyond the court’s shadow. I want to see how freely governed people make a home among these mountains.

Penelope leans over the crystal table, azure scales catching its reflected starlight. Her claw traces the marked road without touching it, following its turns toward the valley.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

The guide knows every bridge, spring, and boundary stone. They will not command your choices, only keep the road’s hazards named.

Penelope

Penelope

The road is open, and this time we are leaving by choice.

“could we choose to go without a guide?”

Alexios

Could we choose to go without a guide?

Alexios’s question carries across the wind-carved terrace. The crystal route-table dims its lesser paths, leaving the blue river settlement shining beneath the western peaks.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Yes. You may descend without a guide, provided you follow the marked road, declare your departure, and return by a lawful waymark.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Because I am witnessing this choice, your safe conduct becomes my personal sponsorship. If you abandon the route or cause dispute beyond it, my standing will answer for your judgment.

She places one claw against the route-table. Gold script records their guide-free passage beneath Serastra’s name, while the old stones awaken along the ravines.

Penelope

Penelope

Then we may go alone, but not carelessly. We owe Lady Serastra a safe return and an honest account of what we find.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

The answer is plain: you can choose to travel without a guide. The trust placed beneath my name is the price of that freedom.

I would like to travel without a guide, but before we leave, what do you know of the many dragon species on this continent? I have a side goal.

Alexios opens his satchel and retrieves an empty journal, keeping it balanced in his uninjured hand. He sets its blank pages against the crystal route-table.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

I know the principal lineages, though no magistrate should pretend one account can contain them all. The mountain drakes guard high passes, the river-scaled clans keep the valleys, and the elder sky-serpents claim the storm heights.

With one claw, Serastra draws three sigils above the map. Emerald, silver, and deep violet lights unfold, each carrying fragments of names, customs, and territorial marks.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

There are ash-winged fire dragons beneath the eastern calderas, moon-pale frost dragons beyond the northern ice, and tide-born leviathan dragons along the western coast. Their laws and rivalries differ sharply.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Write this carefully, envoy. Your side goal is now entered into my sponsorship. I expect a truthful account of what you seek, and my standing will answer if your inquiry causes offense.

Penelope

Penelope

Then we will record names before assumptions, and ask permission before curiosity becomes trespass. That is a fair price for knowledge freely offered.

Alexios

Lady Serastra, which lineage may we safely meet first? We would rather begin with those most likely to welcome honest inquiry.

Serastra studies the blank journal, then the western route glowing across the crystal table. Her expression softens as the question settles into the observatory’s cold air.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

The river-scaled clans are your safest first meeting. Their valley councils welcome declared guests, and their customs favor patient testimony over display of rank.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Begin at Veyra Ford, where the blue river meets the marked road. Present my sponsorship, state your purpose, and ask before recording names or sacred practices.

A blue sigil blooms on the route-table, marking Veyra Ford among willow-lined banks and terraced dwellings. The road brightens from the observatory toward the valley.

Penelope

Penelope

That sounds like a good beginning. A living council, an open purpose, and permission before curiosity. We can meet them as guests, not collectors.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Then Veyra Ford is entered as your first safe encounter. I will send word ahead, and the river clans will know you come under my name and by your own choice.

Lady Serastra, I declare our departure for Veyra Ford. We will follow the marked road under your sponsorship.

Lady Serastra

Lady Serastra

Your departure is witnessed. Keep to the waymarks, present my sponsorship at Veyra Ford, and ask permission before recording what the river clans hold sacred.

Alexios and Penelope descend from the observatory along the glowing stair. Snow gives way to dark stone and mountain grass as the marked road winds west through the ravines.

Penelope

Penelope

The waymarks are clear, and the valley is opening before us. We are leaving by choice, Alexios, with no crown deciding where we stand.

They follow the ancient stones across narrow bridges and beside cold springs, reading each lawful sign. By afternoon, willow-lined banks appear below, and the blue river flashes through Veyra Ford.

Penelope

Penelope

There it is. Let us enter openly, name our purpose, and let the river clans decide how they wish to receive us.

At Veyra Ford, the marked road meets a broad blue river beneath willows. A stone gatehouse overlooks terraced homes and quiet council banners.

Alexios

Alexios

I present Lady Serastra’s sponsorship. We are Alexios and Penelope, lawful guests seeking honest knowledge with the river clans’ permission.

Alexios raises the sealed sponsorship beneath the gatehouse sigil. Its gold mark answers with a soft radiance, visible across the river crossing.

A middle-aged river-scaled dragonkin woman approaches, broad-shouldered and copper-green, with braided black hair, blue council robes, and a silver river-stone at her throat.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

I am Councillor Maressa of Veyra Ford. Lady Serastra’s name carries weight here, and her sponsorship is accepted before our waystone.

The River-Clan Councillor

Alexios

Councillor Maressa, how may we earn the river clans’ cooperation? We would rather offer useful service than presume your welcome.

Maressa studies Alexios beneath the council banners, then glances toward the river where ferrymen, two young adult human men with lean builds, sun-browned faces, short dark hair, and rolled-up blue-gray work clothes guide laden boats through the swift blue current.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

Begin by helping us keep the river safe. A waystone downstream has dimmed, and ferries now risk the old rapids. Restore its lawful light, and cooperation will be freely offered.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

You will travel with our waykeeper, declare every weapon, and ask before entering the shrine beside the stone. Do this without taking tribute, and the clans will hear your questions.

She removes the silver river-stone from her throat and touches it to the gatehouse pillar. A blue route unfurls along the riverbank, ending at a distant amber spark.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

I will place our cooperation under my name. Restore the waystone, and I will convene the valley councils, introduce your inquiry, and grant permission for the records they choose to share.

That is a worthy beginning. We can serve the road first, then listen to those who depend upon it.

Alexios

Councillor Maressa, before we go, do you know where I might find a river dragon?

Maressa’s copper-green features brighten with recognition. Behind her, the river flashes between willow roots as ferrymen guide their boats toward the ford.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

I do. River dragons dwell at the Reedveil Confluence, two bends beyond the dimmed waystone. They guard the oldest spring beneath the eastern bank.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

Their eldest is called Orunath. Approach with empty hands, speak your names, and ask permission before crossing the reed boundary. My river-stone will mark you as welcomed guests.

She returns the silver river-stone to her throat, then traces a second route across the blue map. It branches from the waystone trail toward a mist-wreathed grove.

Penelope

Penelope

A river dragon, and a lawful path to meet one. We should help the ford first, then seek Orunath with Maressa’s welcome.

The River-Clan Councillor

The River-Clan Councillor

That is the proper order. Restore the waystone, and I will send word to Orunath before you arrive. Your question is answered, and the meeting can be made safely.

Alexios and Penelope follow Maressa’s blue route along the riverbank. Willows bend over the water, and the distant amber spark of the dimmed waystone guides them beyond the ford.

Penelope

Penelope

The current is quick here. Stay close to the marked stones, and we will reach it without disturbing the river’s boundary.

The path narrows beside cold rapids. Alexios crosses the slick stones with controlled balance, protecting his injured shoulder while Penelope keeps pace beneath the whispering branches.

They arrive at the waystone, an ancient pillar tilted beside the water. Its runes flicker weakly beneath moss, while a broken ward-line glows across its base.

Penelope

Penelope

There is the failure. The stone still remembers its purpose, Alexios. It needs the river’s path cleared before its light can return.

Alexios clears the ward-line and sets the fallen marker upright with careful strength. Blue radiance surges through the pillar, racing along the river road toward Veyra Ford.

The rapids settle into a safer channel, and the waystone shines steadily. Far upstream, Maressa’s silver river-stone answers with a clear chime, confirming the restoration.
