Tall Harbor Warden

The crystal tablet rests above the central dais as the witness chamber settles into silence. Newly opened alcoves glow softly, their restored names held beneath Namaris’s blue fire.

Tall Harbor Warden

Tall Harbor Warden

The testimony is preserved. Come, marked witness. Namaris will protect your departure, as it protected the record.

The tall warden leads Alexios and Penelope across the awakened bridges. The wyvern follows behind, folding its vast wings beneath the tower’s crown.

Penelope

Penelope

The sea is open again. Beyond it lies the road home, but I wonder what other witnesses still wait beneath these waters.

At the crescent quay, wardens unfurl a broad departure charter across a stone table, marking Namaris’s seal beside the eastern route. The ancient vessel waits under lawful protection.

Tall Harbor Warden

Tall Harbor Warden

Your shipmaster and sailors remain at Crescent Harbor, beyond the sealed road. This vessel is yours to command until Namaris’s current releases it.

Penelope studies the open sea while the wardens prepare their final seals. The wyvern watches the vessel, and the harbor waits quietly for Alexios’s next choice.

“we head home, but along the way i ask Penelope "Penelope, when we get back, how would you like to continue our little wine and dine?"”

Penelope

The departure charter receives its final seal. Namaris’s current gathers beneath the ancient vessel, turning its prow toward the distant western road and home.

Alexios

Alexios

Penelope, when we get back, how would you like to continue our little wine and dine?

Penelope turns from the open sea toward Alexios. Blue fire glimmers across her azure scales as the vessel glides from the crescent quay, his bindings still securing his wounded shoulder.

Penelope

Penelope

I would like a quiet table, a full cup, and no council tablets between us this time.

Penelope

Penelope

After that, we can walk through Ithaca together. Let the whole city see that we came home carrying truth, not another crown’s command.

The tall warden raises her staff, and Namaris’s bridges fold back into the water. The wyvern watches from the quay as the current bears the vessel eastward.

Penelope

Penelope

And if the wine is good, Alexios, I may even let you choose the next course.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach Ithaca

“"same time, same place then?"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Alexios

Alexios

Then, same time and the same place?

The question crosses the deck with the vessel’s quiet rhythm. Wind lifts the edge of the departure charter, while Namaris’s blue fire fades behind them.

Penelope

Penelope

The same time, the same place. When we return to Ithaca, I will meet you there for our table and our wine.

Penelope steps nearer, careful of Alexios’s bound shoulder, and rests one claw against the stone rail. The western road shines gold beneath the hull.

Penelope

Penelope

No court summons, no hidden tablet, and no crown will claim that hour from us. I give you my word.

Ahead, the current bends toward the distant sea-road home. Behind them, Namaris’s towers answer with a final chime, preserving the promise alongside its restored testimony.

“when we arrive at Ithaca i head to my room to get ready”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

The Sea Road Opens

The ancient vessel enters Ithaca’s harbor beneath a clear morning sky. Restored banners hang from the quay, and harbor bells welcome the returning testimony.

Alexios disembarks with the crystal tablet secured among the vessel’s records, his darkened bindings still holding his wounded shoulder close. He crosses the quay with swift, careful strides.

Penelope

Penelope

Your room is ready. I will see the tablet returned to the archives, then meet you when you are prepared.

He reaches the palace without delay, passes through the restored halls, and climbs to his room. Familiar stone, folded tribal gear, and quiet sunlight await him.

Inside, Alexios closes the door and begins getting ready, working around the bound shoulder as he changes from travel-worn gear into clean clothing fit for Ithaca’s evening.

Penelope

Penelope

He has carried truth across drowned roads and ancient harbors. Tonight, perhaps, the city can let him simply return.

“"gods i despise formal wear, i find it so, restrictive" i say as look in the mirror”

The Sea Road Opens

The mirror catches Alexios in clean formal layers, their fitted fabric sitting stiffly across his broad frame while the darkened bindings keep his wounded shoulder close.

Alexios

Alexios

Gods, I despise formal wear. I find it so restrictive.

His reflection offers no argument, only the severe lines of Ithacan evening dress beneath his crimson crests and scarred brow.

Penelope

Penelope

Then I hope you have not mistaken discomfort for obligation. You could still choose something less ceremonial.

Penelope’s voice comes through the closed door, warm and unmistakably amused. She waits beyond it rather than entering uninvited.

Penelope

Penelope

Though if you are ready, Alexios, I have claimed our table before the palace kitchens can turn dinner into another council session.

Sunlight rests across the room’s stone floor. Beyond the door, familiar footsteps remain patient, and the evening waits without summons, seals, or crowns.

“i say to myself "shes right". i change to a similar outfit but with no shirt”

The Sea Road Opens
Alexios

Alexios

She's right.

Alexios changes into a similar formal outfit, leaving his broad torso uncovered. The darkened bindings remain firm around his wounded shoulder, limiting its movement as he dresses.

The new layers settle more easily across his frame, exposing the pale scales and long scar beneath his crimson crests. He checks the fit in the mirror.

Penelope

Penelope

That sounds considerably more like you. Shall I assume the palace will survive the scandal of seeing your shoulders?

Her amusement lingers beyond the door. When Alexios finishes adjusting the clothing around his bindings, the waiting footsteps shift closer to the threshold.

Penelope

Penelope

I promise the table is private, the wine is ready, and no one has brought a tablet to place between us.

The evening light deepens across the stone floor. Beyond the closed door, Penelope waits with patient warmth, leaving the next step to Alexios.

“"there had better not be, and I'm ready if your are"”

Penelope
Alexios

Alexios

There had better not be, and I’m ready if you are.

Penelope

Penelope

Then you have my word twice over. No tablets, no summons, and no council waiting beneath the table.

The door opens. Penelope stands beyond it in deep blue evening robes, her azure scales bright beneath the corridor lamps, one claw extended in invitation.

Penelope

Penelope

Come on, truth-seeker. I have guarded our hour from every official interruption Ithaca could invent.

She leads him through quieter palace corridors toward a small balcony dining room. Two places wait beside a brazier, with wine, bread, roasted roots, and glazed river fish.

Penelope

Penelope

I chose this room because its only witnesses are the stars, the sea, and an elderly cook who has sworn absolute secrecy.

Penelope

Penelope

Before we eat, tell me this: when you look across Ithaca now, what do you want its people to remember about you?

“i want them to remember the hero, not the exile, and i want them to view me as an individual not the kings son”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

I want them to remember the hero who stood for truth, not the exile they condemned. I want them to see Alexios, not the king’s son.

Penelope studies him across the small table. Firelight moves over her azure scales, and the sea below carries the palace bells into the dark.

Penelope

Penelope

Then that is what I will tell them. Not your father’s title, not the crown’s accusation, but the choices you made when both tried to define you.

She lifts her cup, though she does not drink yet. Her gaze remains fixed on him, steady and certain.

Penelope

Penelope

You crossed the badlands, faced the ruins, carried the testimony, and gave Ithaca its truth. Those were your deeds, Alexios. No king owns them.

Penelope

Penelope

Tomorrow, I will speak your name in the archives as its own record. Tonight, I will remember the one who chose truth when vengeance would have been easier.

“there is one thing that i havent told you about me though, take a guess what it is"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

There is one thing I have not told you about me. Take a guess what it is.

Penelope lowers her cup without drinking. Her eyes narrow with playful concentration, while the brazier paints warm light across the blue of her scales.

Penelope

Penelope

You secretly enjoy formal clothing, despite your dramatic complaints. No, wait. You have been hiding a talent for poetry.

She leans across the table, studying his crimson crests and scarred brow as though the answer might be written in every hard-won mark.

Penelope

Penelope

It is neither of those. You are afraid that, without exile, truth, and ancient roads to fight for, you will not know who you are.

Penelope

Penelope

Please let me be wrong about the part that matters.

Penelope

Penelope

That is my guess, Alexios. But if I am wrong, you may tell me what I missed. I am listening.

“no none of those, although i am quite fond of poetry, I was not the only one accused of murder that day, there were three other that were like family to me”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Alexios

Alexios

No, none of those, although I am quite fond of poetry. I was not the only one accused of murder that day. Three others, who were like family to me, were accused as well.

Penelope’s playful expression fades. She sets her cup down carefully, the brazier’s glow catching the tension in her claws as she gives his words their full weight.

Penelope

Penelope

Three others? The king’s accusation was meant to isolate you, but it reached farther than I knew.

The sea murmurs below the balcony. Penelope leans forward, her attention fixed on Alexios, while the untouched meal cools between them.

Penelope

Penelope

Were they condemned with you, or did the crown make separate charges against them? Tell me who they were, if their names are safe to speak here.

Penelope

Penelope

He carried their accusation alongside his own. How much of his exile was built to bury all four of them?

✓ Quest Accepted

Reveal what happened to Alexios’s three accused companions

“we were somewhat of a brotherhood "the four flames" we called ourselves, it was myself a gorgeous raptor by the name of cindera, a absolute mountain of a tyrannosaur named tyranos, and ketnros the spiky, and quite one, cindera and kentros chose to bend for the sword, where as me and tyranos chose exile”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

We were a brotherhood called the Four Flames: myself, Cindera, a gorgeous raptor, Tyranos, an absolute mountain of a tyrannosaur, and Kentros the spiky and quiet.

The names leave Alexios with a visible pause. His claws tighten around the cup, and for a breath his composure falters beneath the weight of memories he has carried alone.

Alexios

Alexios

Cindera and Kentros chose to bend for the sword. Tyranos and I chose exile instead.

Penelope

Penelope

The Four Flames. Two bent, and two were cast out, or refused to bend. That was not merely a charge against you, Alexios. It was the breaking of a family.

The brazier snaps softly. Penelope reaches across the table, stopping short of his bound shoulder, and leaves her claw open between them.

Penelope

Penelope

Are Cindera and Kentros still alive? And Tyranos, where did exile carry him? I will hear their names without letting the crown decide what they mean.

“as i said cindera, and kentros chose death, and tryanos still wanders the badlands, but im not going looking for him, if he wants to come back i wont stop him, but im happy he staid away"”

FAILURE (Great Willpower, rolled -4)

“as i said cindera, and kentros chose death, and tryanos still wanders the badlands, but im not going looking for him, if he wants to come back i wont stop him, but im happy he staid away"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Alexios

Alexios

Cindera and Kentros chose death. Tyranos still wanders the badlands, but I will not go looking for him. If he returns, I will not stop him. I am glad he stayed away.

The words settle between the cups and cooling meal. Penelope’s open claw closes slowly, not in anger, but around the weight of what he has entrusted to her.

Penelope

Penelope

I believe you. You are not abandoning Tyranos, Alexios. You are refusing to drag him back into a life he chose to leave.

Her acceptance comes with a cost. Penelope’s gaze sharpens, and the warmth of the private confession becomes a responsibility she will not carry silently.

Penelope

Penelope

But I will need their names for the archives. I cannot promise to call Cindera and Kentros villains, or let their deaths vanish beneath the king’s accusation.

Penelope

Penelope

Give me what you remember of them, and I will preserve it faithfully. In return, you must trust me to tell Ithaca that the Four Flames were more than a charge.

Quest Complete

Reveal what happened to Alexios’s three accused companions

Attribute Upgrade: Willpower Great→Superb

“cindera, was once a high stakes thief, until i caught her trying to steal my spear, instead of reporting her, i introduced her to my dear friend tyranos who taught her how to really live, and kentros, let me just say he was always a little out there, so to speak, and lastly tyranos, he was and still is the oldest and wisest of us, and probably the strongest, but his one problem, is his temper, he gives the term hot-headed a whole new meaning”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +2)

Alexios

Alexios

Cindera was a high-stakes thief. I caught her trying to steal Everburn, but I reported nothing. I brought her to Tyranos instead.

Alexios

Alexios

Tyranos taught her how to really live. Kentros was always a little out there, so to speak. Strange, spiky, and quiet in his own way.

Alexios

Alexios

Tyranos was the oldest and wisest of us, and probably the strongest. His one problem was his temper. He gives hot-headed a whole new meaning.

Penelope listens without interrupting. The names become people in her mind rather than entries in an accusation, and the brazier paints restless shadows across the table.

Penelope

Penelope

Cindera began as a thief, but you gave her a place to become something else. Tyranos taught her, and Kentros carried his own strange silence.

Penelope

Penelope

And Tyranos was the heart of your brotherhood, powerful and wise, but dangerous when his temper took hold. I will preserve all of that, not just the crown’s charge.

She reaches for her cup, then pauses before drinking, her gaze remaining steady on Alexios as the Four Flames take shape in the unfinished archive of memory.

“but the night before our grand accusation, tyranos and myself had a very harsh falling out”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

Alexios

Alexios

The night before the grand accusation, Tyranos and I had a very harsh falling out.

The confession cuts through the quiet balcony. Alexios’s bound shoulder remains still, but his claws tighten around the cup as the brazier throws firelight across his scars.

Penelope

Penelope

A falling out with Tyranos, on the eve of the crown’s accusation. Was it anger between brothers, or did something happen that the king could use against you?

Penelope

Penelope

He has named the wound beneath the accusation. I must not turn his memory into another judgment.

The untouched fish cools between them. Beyond the balcony, Ithaca’s lamps shimmer on the dark sea, while Penelope waits without pressing her open claw toward him.

Penelope

Penelope

You need not soften it for the archives, Alexios. Tell me what passed between you, and I will preserve the truth of that night with the rest.

Penelope

Penelope

Did Tyranos leave because of your quarrel, or was the crown already moving against the Four Flames before either of you understood it?

✓ Quest Accepted

Preserve the Four Flames' names

“i will tell you, if you promise that the words that i am about to tell you never leave this table”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

I will tell you, if you promise that the words I am about to speak never leave this table.

The request settles over the balcony, quieter than the sea below. Alexios keeps his bound shoulder close, while the brazier draws gold along his scars.

Penelope

Penelope

I promise. What you tell me here belongs to this table, and to me alone. I will not place it in the archives or repeat it to Ithaca.

Penelope

Penelope

He is asking for shelter before he offers the deepest part of the wound. I will guard both his words and his trust.

Penelope lifts her cup, then sets it aside untouched. She extends her claw across the table, palm open, offering the promise without demanding his confession.

Penelope

Penelope

By the sea that carried us home, by the truth we restored, and by my own name, these words will not leave this table unless you release them.

Penelope

Penelope

You may speak without softening anything, Alexios. I am listening, and this secret is safe with me.

“tyranos, he accused me of having slept with cindera, witch at the time I had denied, he didn't believe so we broke into a fight, that's how i got the scar on my chest”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -2)

Alexios

Alexios

Tyranos accused me of sleeping with Cindera. I denied it, but he did not believe me, and we broke into a fight.

Alexios’s confession reaches the scar crossing his chest. His voice falters once, and the pause exposes the cost of forcing the memory into words.

Alexios

Alexios

That fight is how I got this scar.

Penelope

Penelope

He accused you of betraying him with Cindera, then attacked you when you denied it. That was the fracture between you.

Penelope’s open claw remains on the table. She does not reach for the scar or fill the silence, letting the truth stand without turning it into spectacle.

Penelope

Penelope

Did you both stop when the wound was made, or did the fight end only when one of you could no longer continue?

Penelope

Penelope

He has given me the truth he feared to speak. I must protect his trust without pretending this was a small wound.

“we knew one of us would have ended up dead, and that would have been a whole nother mess”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Alexios

Alexios

We both knew one of us would end up dead, and that would have made everything worse.

The words settle heavily over the table. Penelope’s open claw withdraws a finger’s breadth, and the private promise between them acquires a visible strain.

Penelope

Penelope

So you fought while knowing the fight could become a death sentence. That makes the scar more than an accident, Alexios.

She does not accuse him, but her gaze moves from his scar to his bound shoulder. The cost of his confession is clear: her unquestioning trust has become careful scrutiny.

Penelope

Penelope

I promised these words would not leave this table, and I will keep that promise. But I cannot pretend I hear no danger in them.

Penelope

Penelope

If Tyranos believed betrayal had already occurred, then this quarrel may have begun long before the wound. What else was hidden between them?

Penelope

Penelope

Did you stop because one of you chose mercy, Alexios, or because the fight finally took the choice away?

“we stopped because the fight finally took the choice away, but know this if were to go back in time i would fix what i did to anger him”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Alexios

Alexios

We stopped because the fight finally took the choice away. But know this: if I could go back, I would fix what I did to anger him.

The admission leaves Alexios’s claws still around his cup. Firelight catches the scar across his torso, while the sea keeps its low rhythm beneath the balcony.

Penelope

Penelope

You would undo your part in the anger, even knowing Tyranos chose to meet it with a fight that could have killed you.

Penelope’s gaze softens, though caution remains in it. She reaches across the table and rests her claw beside his, careful not to touch the bound shoulder.

Penelope

Penelope

That does not make you the only one responsible, Alexios. Regret can name your fault without carrying his entire burden for him.

Penelope

Penelope

He is not defending the fight. He is mourning the moment before it became inevitable, when another choice might still have saved them both.

Penelope

Penelope

What did you do to anger him? You promised the truth would remain here, and I will hear this part without judging you.

“promise you wont get mad at me, I slept with cinder. i say with a nervous smile”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Alexios

Alexios

Promise you won't get mad at me. I slept with Cindera.

The confession leaves Alexios’s cup trembling faintly between his claws, his nervous smile unable to soften the words. The brazier crackles beside the sudden silence.

Penelope

Penelope

I promised not to judge you, Alexios. I did not promise that hearing this would leave me untouched.

Penelope withdraws her claw from beside his, not recoiling, but placing both hands around her untouched cup. Her eyes remain fixed on him.

Penelope

Penelope

You slept with Cindera while Tyranos believed you had betrayed him. That does not make his violence your fault, but it explains why your secret cut so deeply.

Penelope

Penelope

He trusted me with the truth, and I will keep it. But he has changed what I understand about that night, and about the space between us.

Penelope

Penelope

I will not tell anyone. That is the promise you bought with your confession. But you owe me the whole truth now, Alexios: was it before the quarrel, or did it happen while Tyranos still believed you were his brother?

“Know this Penelope, I never had feelings for Cindera, what ever we felt that night it was not love”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Alexios

Alexios

Know this, Penelope: I never had feelings for Cindera. Whatever we felt that night, it was not love.

The words settle between the untouched cups. Alexios’s bindings hold his wounded shoulder close, while the brazier throws restless light across his scarred chest.

Penelope

Penelope

I believe you. But belief does not make the secret harmless, Alexios. You hid it while Tyranos carried the wound openly.

Penelope

Penelope

He has given me the distinction I needed, but not peace. I must guard his secret without pretending it costs me nothing.

Penelope lifts her cup, then leaves it untouched. Her gaze remains steady, though the warmth between them has become something more careful and difficult.

Penelope

Penelope

I will keep your confidence, as promised. But you have spent much of my trust tonight, and rebuilding it will require more than saying it was not love.

Penelope

Penelope

Tell me what it was, then. Not for the archives, not for Tyranos, and not to punish you. I need to understand what you chose that night.

“Back then I was a little bit of a party animal, and I may have been a little tipsy that night”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

Back then I was a little bit of a party animal, and I may have been a little tipsy that night.

The admission lands plainly, without the defenses of romance or destiny. Alexios’s bindings hold his wounded shoulder close as firelight trembles across the table.

Penelope

Penelope

So it was a reckless night, made worse by drink, and Cindera was there. I understand the circumstance, Alexios. I do not yet understand the choice.

Penelope

Penelope

He is not excusing himself. He is showing me the foolishness beneath the secret, and trusting me not to confuse it with love.

Penelope finally drinks, though her eyes never leave him. The untouched meal and cooling wine remain between them, witnesses to a truth neither can make smaller.

Penelope

Penelope

Were you both seeking comfort, chasing celebration, or simply failing to think beyond that night? Tell me what you remember choosing, even through the drink.

“Let me tell you the whole story, that morning we had just succeeded in a rather large assault against a rival tribes stronghold so we decided to celebrate with drink and story, later that night after we had all had our fun I went back to my room where cindera was waiting for me, I didn’t see he as cindera that night I only saw her as a woman”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +3)

Alexios

Alexios

That morning, we had just succeeded in a large assault against a rival tribe’s stronghold. The Four Flames returned victorious, so we celebrated with drink and stories.

The brazier settles into a low glow. Penelope remains still, giving the confession room to unfold without interruption or judgment.

Alexios

Alexios

Later that night, after we had all had our fun, I returned to my room. Cindera was waiting there for me.

Alexios

Alexios

I was tipsy, and I did not see her as Cindera that night. I saw her only as a woman, and I chose to sleep with her.

Penelope’s cup lowers to the table. She hears the whole account now, stripped of excuses, while Alexios’s bindings keep his wounded shoulder close.

Penelope

Penelope

Then the choice was yours, made after victory and drink, but still yours. I will not call it love, and I will not call it harmless.

Penelope

Penelope

You have told me everything you promised to tell. I will keep this secret, and I will remember that you trusted me with the truth before asking me to forgive it.

“let me clarify something about cindera, she was a succubus, she had every young man in Ithaca at the time wrapped around her slutty little fingers”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

The Sea Road Opens
Penelope
Penelope
Alexios

Alexios

Let me clarify something about Cindera. She was a succubus, and nearly every young man in Ithaca was wrapped around her little finger.

Penelope’s expression tightens. The brazier paints her azure scales gold as she considers the distinction between Cindera’s nature, her influence, and Alexios’s responsibility.

Penelope

Penelope

A succubus changes the shape of that confession, Alexios, but it does not erase your choice. Was her influence magical, or did Ithaca simply fall at her feet?

Penelope

Penelope

If Cindera bewitched them, Tyranos may have feared more than betrayal. He may have believed she could turn the whole brotherhood against itself.

The wine remains untouched between them. Penelope does not retreat from the truth, but her scrutiny sharpens as the forgotten brotherhood gains a more dangerous shape.

Penelope

Penelope

Ithaca’s young men being captivated by her explains Tyranos’s suspicion, perhaps even his fear. It still leaves one question: did Cindera enchant you that night?

Penelope

Penelope

Tell me plainly, Alexios. Were you bewitched, or were you merely reckless enough to mistake desire and drink for freedom?

“perhaps she did, i have no i-, wait a minute, she put something in my drink that night, i had thought it just tasted a bit off and blew it off as such but now I see someone did spike my drink, and that someone was cindera”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

The Sea Road Opens
Penelope
Penelope
Alexios

Alexios

Perhaps she did. I have no... wait. Cindera put something in my drink that night. It tasted off, and I dismissed it. She spiked it.

The realization sharpens as Alexios speaks. The memory of bitter sweetness returns, but the crowded celebration leaves no clear measure of what Cindera added or when she reached his cup.

Penelope

Penelope

You believe she enchanted the drink, not you directly. That changes the truth of your choice, Alexios, even if it cannot restore what the night took from you.

Penelope

Penelope

He remembered the taste only now. I must protect his confidence, but I cannot let uncertainty become another weapon against him.

Penelope pushes her untouched cup away and leans forward, her eyes fixed on him. The private table feels suddenly like a place of testimony again.

Penelope

Penelope

Did Cindera serve the drink herself, or did you see her near it afterward? And do you remember anyone else drinking from the same vessel?

Penelope

Penelope

I believe that you tasted something wrong. We will keep the uncertainty precise: you know she spiked your drink, but not yet what the substance did.

“cindera was good at many things, but she did not know her way around a bar, but as i said before she had every young man in Ithaca wrapped around her finger, probably bribed the bartender who did happen to a very well mannered young man”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

Alexios

Alexios

Cindera was good at many things, but she did not know her way around a bar. She probably bribed the bartender.

Alexios

Alexios

He was a very well-mannered young man, and she had every young man in Ithaca wrapped around her finger.

Penelope studies the confession in silence. The abandoned cups and cooling meal remain between them while the brazier casts restless light across her azure scales.

Penelope

Penelope

A bribe would explain how she controlled the drink without making a spectacle. You remember the bartender as courteous, not willing.

Penelope

Penelope

If Cindera paid him, he may have believed he was helping her charm a guest, not placing Alexios in danger.

Penelope

Penelope

Did you see him accept anything from her, Alexios? Or is that part an inference from how easily she moved through the tavern?

Penelope draws her cup close but does not drink. Her expression remains guarded, yet the question carries no accusation, only a careful effort to separate what Alexios knows from what he suspects.

“cindera was a theif, she did many things without me knowing”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +2)

Alexios

Alexios

Cindera was a thief. She did many things without me knowing, and I cannot say how often she moved beyond what I saw.

The admission settles beside the abandoned cups. Alexios’s bindings hold his wounded shoulder close as the brazier’s light moves across his scarred chest.

Penelope

Penelope

Then the bribed bartender is only one piece of what you know. Cindera kept secrets as naturally as other thieves kept lockpicks.

Penelope

Penelope

He is separating memory from suspicion at last. I must not turn every hidden act into proof of guilt, nor dismiss the danger she concealed.

Penelope

Penelope

You cannot prove she paid him, but you know she acted beyond your knowledge. That uncertainty belongs in this secret, Alexios, and I will not make it sharper than the truth allows.

Penelope sets her cup aside and leans nearer, her guarded expression easing into concentration. The private table remains theirs, but the old night grows more precise between them.

Penelope

Penelope

What else did Cindera hide from the Four Flames? Start with what you discovered afterward, and we will keep rumor separate from what you truly witnessed.

Alexios

Alexios

When I woke the next morning, Cindera was gone. She had left a note, but I never read it. I still have it.

The confession changes the air between them. Alexios’s claws remain near his untouched cup, while the brazier’s glow catches the edge of an old folded paper kept among his belongings.

Penelope

Penelope

You still have the note, after all these years, and never opened it? Was that because you feared what she had written, or because the morning gave you no chance?

Penelope

Penelope

If Cindera left words behind, they may reveal what she intended, or only deepen the uncertainty around that night.

Penelope does not reach for the note. She leaves its choice with Alexios, her guarded expression softened by concern rather than suspicion.

Penelope

Penelope

I will not ask you to open it for my sake. But if you want the truth of that morning, the note may hold the one thing Cindera chose to leave visible.

Penelope

Penelope

Where have you kept it, Alexios? And what stopped you from reading it when you first found her gone?

Alexios

Alexios

In my personal vault, with the relics of my fallen brethren. That is where I keep Cindera’s note.

The answer settles between the cups. Behind Alexios’s formal layers and bindings, the vault’s location is clear: a guarded chamber where the Four Flames’ remnants remain preserved.

Penelope

Penelope

You kept it among their relics. Then the note was never merely forgotten, Alexios. You placed it beside the people and choices that shaped you.

Penelope rises, taking neither cup nor plate. The balcony door stands open to the palace corridor, and the vault lies within the restored palace, accessible under Alexios’s authority.

And if Cindera’s last words explain what happened, we will face them carefully. Not as an accusation, but as truth finally given a voice.

Before leaving the balcony, Alexios reaches for the wine bottle with his unbound claw. His darkened bindings keep the wounded shoulder close as he lifts it carefully from the table.

It’s for later.

Penelope watches the bottle settle securely in his grasp. The guarded tension around her eyes eases, replaced by a small, knowing smile.

Penelope

Penelope

Of course it is. I should have expected you to protect the most important witness at this table.

She gathers neither cup nor plate, leaving the private meal behind as they turn toward the corridor. The unopened promise of another glass travels with them.

The Sea Road Opens

Alexios carries the wine toward his room, moving carefully with the darkened bindings securing his wounded shoulder. Penelope follows only as far as the corridor.

Inside, he closes and locks the door. The palace sounds fall away, leaving stone, lamplight, and the guarded quiet of his private chamber.

Penelope

Penelope

I will wait here. Take whatever time you need, Alexios. The note belongs to your memory before it belongs to any answer.

Alexios opens the concealed passage to his personal vault and places his claw against its layered seal. Ancient markings resist, then yield cleanly beneath his awakened sealbreaking.

The vault opens without alarm. Relics of the Four Flames rest in ordered niches, and Cindera’s folded note lies exactly where Alexios left it, preserved beneath a small crystal ward.

The ward’s faint glow reveals an unasked-for safeguard: the note has preserved Cindera’s scent and the residue of the substance once spilled on Alexios’s drink.

Penelope

Penelope

Alexios? I heard the seal release. Is the vault open?

“i grab the note and open it, and its an apology”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

The Sea Road Opens

Alexios lifts Cindera’s folded note from beneath the crystal ward. The safeguard dims beneath his claw, releasing the preserved scent of bitter herbs and old smoke.

He unfolds the paper carefully despite the bindings holding his wounded shoulder close. Cindera’s hurried script fills both sides, the ink faded but legible.

The note begins with an apology: “Alexios, I am sorry. For the drink, for the lies, and for what I made you believe about that night.”

Below, Cindera admits she arranged the drugged cup and came to his room intending to manipulate him, but claims she never expected Tyranos to learn the truth.

The final lines are cramped beneath a dark smear: “You deserved better than my games. Tell Tyranos I was afraid, if you ever find the courage to tell him anything.”

Penelope

Penelope

Alexios? What does it say? I heard the ward fade.

Beyond the locked door, Penelope waits in the corridor. Inside the vault, Cindera’s apology rests open in Alexios’s hand, beside the relics of the Four Flames.

Alexios slams the wine bottle against the vault’s stone floor with his unbound claw. The impact rings through the chamber, scattering red wine across the ancient threshold.

His roar follows, vast and furious, shaking dust from the relic niches. The crystal ward flares around Cindera’s note, preserving the paper despite the violence.

Penelope

Penelope

Alexios! I am coming in.

The locked door opens under Penelope’s authority. She steps into the vault, azure scales taut beneath her robes, and stops when she sees the spilled wine and open note.

Penelope

Penelope

I heard the apology in your roar. Tell me what she did, and tell me whether you are hurt.

Cindera’s relics remain undisturbed around them. The note lies open in Alexios’s claw, its dark smear and cramped final lines plainly visible beneath the ward’s pale glow.

Penelope

Alexios lunges for one of Cindera’s twin swords among the relics. His unbound claw closes around its hilt, while the darkened bindings wrench his wounded shoulder short.

He drives the blade against the vault’s stone threshold and twists with all his strength. The sword refuses to break, but a thin line of violet fire wakes along its fuller.

Penelope

Penelope

Alexios, stop. That is not ordinary steel. The note’s residue is answering the sword.

The violet light crawls from the blade into the crystal ward around Cindera’s note. The relic shudders, then projects a faint image of the same dark smear.

Penelope

Penelope

You nearly severed the ward’s concealment. The sword is linked to whatever she put in your drink, or to the proof she left behind.

The blade slips from Alexios’s grip and strikes the floor without cracking. Its twin remains in the niche, but both hilts now bear the same violet glow.

Penelope

Penelope

Do not break them yet. We may be able to use the pair to uncover what the note cannot say.

You’re right, Penelope.

Penelope

Then leave the sword where it fell. Agreement is useful, but only if we act before the residue fades.

The violet glow steadies at Alexios’s acknowledgment. From the fallen blade, a thin thread of light reaches toward its twin in the niche, joining both relics beneath the crystal ward.

Penelope

Penelope

The pair remembers the moment as one weapon. If we bring them together without breaking the ward, they may reveal what Cindera concealed in the drink.

Penelope kneels beside the fallen sword but does not touch it. The note’s dark smear brightens, projecting a fleeting image of a tavern cup marked with a three-pronged sigil.

Penelope

Penelope

There. That mark is not a brewer’s sign. It belongs to a distiller, healer, or ritualist. The swords can lead us to the name.

Penelope

Alexios reaches into the niche with his unbound claw. The violet-lit twin slides free without resistance, its edge humming as the dark bindings keep his wounded shoulder close.

He carries the sword across the vault and sets its hilt beside the fallen blade. The two relics meet beneath the crystal ward, their violet fire joining into one steady radiance.

Penelope

Penelope

Good. Slowly, Alexios. Let the swords remember each other without forcing the ward.

The paired blades rise a finger’s breadth from the stone. Their crossed shadows form the three-pronged tavern sigil, while bitter scent and old smoke gather above the note.

Penelope

Penelope

There is another mark beneath it. A crescent over three drops. That may identify the distiller, or the ritual used to alter the drink.

The crystal ward opens a narrow window of pale light between the blades. Within it, a painted sign appears: a black flask beneath a silver crescent, hanging over a tavern door.

Penelope

Cindera did not leave only an apology. She left a path to whoever helped her prepare the drink.

Alexios lifts the paired swords from beneath the crystal ward and carries them back to their niches. The violet fire dims as each blade settles into its preserved place.

The crossed shadows separate, and the tavern sigil fades from the stone. Bitter scent and old smoke thin until only the vault’s cool air remains.

Penelope

Penelope

Careful and clean. The ward accepts their return, and nothing in the relics has been disturbed.

The crystal ward closes over Cindera’s note, preserving its apology and the faint residue beneath the dark smear. The painted flask sign remains suspended in memory within the light.

Penelope

Penelope

The black flask beneath the silver crescent is our lead. If that tavern still stands, someone there may remember who prepared the drink.

Penelope looks from the sealed relics to Alexios, then toward the vault passage. Her expression is solemn, but the path left by Cindera has finally become clear.

Alexios

There is still one weapon of the Four Flames missing from this vault. Tyranos’s hammer, Flamewrath, is not here.

Penelope turns back toward the ordered niches. Beneath the relics’ blue ward-light, three places bear the remnants of the brotherhood, while no hammer rests among them.

Penelope

Penelope

Flamewrath. Then Tyranos’s relic was never brought here, or someone removed it before the vault was sealed.

The crystal ward glimmers over Cindera’s note, but it does not answer. The empty space is unmistakable, preserved by the vault’s careful arrangement rather than hidden by magic.

Penelope

Penelope

Tyranos chose exile, and his hammer vanished with him. If Flamewrath survived, it may be the only relic still carried beyond the crown’s reach.

Penelope

Penelope

Do you know whether Tyranos still had Flamewrath when he entered the badlands, Alexios? Cindera’s sign may lead us to one truth, while his hammer points toward another.

Beyond the vault, the palace corridor waits in lamplight. The Four Flames remain divided among sealed relics, an unopened path, and one weapon absent from every record before them.

Alexios

He always carried Flamewrath. Tyranos never went anywhere without that hammer. When he left Ithaca, he did not leave it behind.

Penelope’s attention shifts from the empty niche to Alexios. The absence becomes more than a missing relic: Flamewrath left Ithaca with Tyranos, beyond the crown’s records.

Alexios

Alexios

He left his family too. His wife and son are still here in Ithaca.

Penelope

Penelope

His wife and son? Then Tyranos did not simply vanish into the badlands. He abandoned a family that may still know where he went, or why he carried Flamewrath away.

Penelope

Penelope

A living family can preserve what exile erased, but they may also have spent years believing Tyranos chose never to return.

The crystal ward brightens over Cindera’s note. Its violet memory answers the name Flamewrath with a faint pulse, while the empty niche remains cold and undisturbed.

Penelope

Penelope

We should find them before following the black flask’s trail. If Tyranos entrusted Flamewrath to anyone, his wife or son may be the only witnesses who can tell us where.

Penelope

Penelope

Then tonight belongs to you, not to Tyranos’s family or another buried truth. I will help you keep that boundary.

You painted this? Alexios, that is not a small secret. It is beautiful, and you hid it behind your father’s name.

Penelope studies the portrait again, then the wet brush beside it. Her suspicion gives way to attentive warmth, though she notices the strain he tried to conceal.

She steps closer, studying the painted curve of her face and the hidden council seal within the frame. Her claw hovers near the brush, careful not to disturb it.

You paint with your heart, then. That explains why this feels less like an image and more like the way you remembered me when I was gone.

Penelope

Penelope

Alexios, you have been hiding an entire gallery from me?

Paintings cover the walls: Penelope in quiet repose, laughing beside the sea, and striking a few theatrical, mischievous poses that make her crest lift in surprise.

Other canvases show the Four Flames together before exile: Cindera poised over stolen jewels, Tyranos towering beside Flamewrath, and Kentros half-lost among angular shadows.

These are not studies, Alexios. They are memories. You kept all of them alive in color, even when the crown tried to erase them.

“they would have tried, if only they had the key. we walk up to a painting of Penelope, in a rather, seductive pose.”

Alexios leads Penelope toward a canvas near the gallery’s center, where she is painted in a poised, alluring stance, azure scales gleaming beneath deep blue drapery.

Penelope

Penelope

Oh. You placed this one where I would eventually find it, did you not?

Penelope steps closer, studying the painted tilt of her crest and the confident curve of her posture. The amber motes drift across the frame’s hidden seal.

Penelope

I recognize the pose. I used it to distract a palace clerk while you searched his records.

She glances toward Alexios, amusement returning to her eyes. His bound shoulder keeps his movements careful as he stands beside the painting.

Penelope

Penelope

I see it now. Not merely a brotherhood forged by victory, but the family you believed could survive every wound.

Penelope lifts one claw toward the painted figures, stopping just short of the surface. Her gaze travels from Cindera to Tyranos, then Kentros, before returning to Alexios.

Penelope

You hoped the four of you would remain together, even after anger, exile, and the crown’s lies. That hope was real, Alexios. It was not foolish.

Penelope
