The sealed seam sits black and quiet under the tower’s roots. The wall-light steadies to a dull amber, and the runoff around Angela’s boots barely ripples.

Then the knocking comes again, slow, deliberate, from beneath the bedrock. Not a leak, not a pipe, a signal.

Angela Diaboli

It is close.

Angela drives her hand to the patched stone. The floor answers with a faint tremor, and the sound shifts, as if whatever waits below is pressing back.

Silas

Silas

My queen, say the word. I will tear it open, or hold the dark while you decide.

Brutus

Brutus

If something lives under the tower, it ends here.

Azrael

Azrael

Or we find proof before we break the seal again. I would rather not guess at another plague.

Peter

Peter

The roots are quiet now. That’s never a good sign.

The knocking stops. In the sudden hush, a fine line of dust lifts from the seam, tracing the outline of a hidden panel buried in the foundation. Whatever is below has heard her.

Angela puts her strength into the marked stone, and the hidden panel gives way with a dry crack. Dust bursts outward, and a narrow stair drops open beneath the tower.

The first breath from below carries up cold air, old metal, and the scent of rainwater trapped in deep places. The knocking is not gone, it is below them now, steady as a heartbeat.

Silas

Silas

There. A way down, and a way in.

Azrael

Azrael

That seal was not hiding a room. It was hiding a route.

Brutus

Brutus

Good. Let it lead to whatever has been testing the tower.

Peter

Peter

Roots do not make stairs like that. Someone wanted this found.

At the bottom edge of the opening, something metal catches the light, a fixed ring set into the stone like a handle or chain anchor, waiting in the dark.

The Hidden Panel Beneath the Tower

The hidden panel hung open over the dark stairwell, its metal ring cold in Angela's grip.

Brutus

Brutus

Built for this. Or built to be broken.

Azrael

Azrael

It knew we'd come. It wanted witness.

Angela Diaboli

Then let it hear my footsteps.

Silas

Silas

The tower has always been a throat. Something below has been singing through it.

Peter

Peter

Whatever it is, it has no floor left to hide behind.

Angela stood at the lip of the opening, the tower above her newly claimed and the dark below still knocking. The seal was broken, the hidden path exposed, and the thing in the foundation had been answered. In the hush that followed, the tower belonged to Angela Diaboli and the dead silence beneath it belonged to no one.
