The next morning, Angela Diaboli leads the way back to the place that first answered with that wet, labored breath. Below the tower’s warmer halls, the air turns damp and bitter, thick with rot and ozone.
The jagged opening yawns ahead. Black sludge still clings to the edges, pulsing once, like it remembers the tower’s pulse and is trying to keep time with it.
Silas, Brutus, Azrael, and Peter fan out around her, weapons ready. Then the mass stirs, and the breath comes again, wet and human, trapped inside the corruption.

Azrael
This is not a fresh wound. It has been growing here for a while.
The sludge peels back in spasms, revealing a distorted body shape inside, half-swallowed by blackened growth. Skin sickness, or something close enough to wear its face.

Silas
It heard us before. It is hearing us now.
The thing inside the mass lifts its head a fraction, and the labored breath turns sharp, like it is waiting to decide whether to beg or bite.

Identify the true nature of the corruption
✓ Quest Accepted
Drive the corruption back from the tower
“I command the Apostles to hold their fire while I reach out to touch the corruption.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Angela’s order stills the chamber. Weapons lower by inches, not trust, just obedience.
She reaches into the seam of black sludge, and the mass trembles around her hand like a throat trying not to cough.
The corruption answers with a pulse that is not random. It shivers in a pattern, tight and deliberate, like a thing listening back.

Azrael
It has a body inside the growth, and the growth is behaving like nerves.
A slick strand peels from the opening and recoils from Angela’s touch, exposing hairline channels running through the black mass like roots.

Silas
Queen, it recognizes you.
The infected flesh inside twists once, and the whole spill of sludge presses back from the tower wall, as if her hand has named its edge.
