The Bound Merchant

Sakara rides south from the river settlement, leaving the river chief’s signed alliance beneath the canopy. Zamanie travels beside her, while the white mare carries them steadily beyond the river roads.

The green banks thin into dry scrub and broken hills. At the edge of the southern raiders’ territory, a wrecked caravan lies scattered beside a torn waymarker.

A middle-aged man, lean and narrow-shouldered with a missing front tooth with sun-darkened skin, a graying beard, and a sand-colored merchant’s coat hangs bound beneath the marker. His face is dusty, but his eyes remain alert.

The Bound Merchant

The Bound Merchant

Help me, please. They took the wagons and left me here when they rode south.

Zamanie dismounts and examines the churned tracks without touching the scattered cargo. Beyond them, several fresh hoofprints angle toward the old hill-fort on the ridgeline.

The raiders are gathering at that fort. But listen, stranger: someone directs them. Their leader knew Kendathar’s caravan routes before we ever reached the Isles.

Zamanie

Zamanie

That is no ordinary border raid. If he speaks true, someone has been feeding the southern tribe our movements.

✓ Quest Accepted

Free the bound merchant.

“I use my glaive to free the merchant “how well armed were they? Did you get a sense of how many there were?””

Sakara draws the Moon Dragon’s Wrath Glaive and hooks its edge beneath the rope at the merchant’s wrists. One controlled pull parts the binding, though the blade skids against the marker and jars her grip.

How well armed were they? Did you get a sense of how many there were?

The merchant rubs his freed wrists and pushes himself upright. Sakara’s knuckles bear a shallow scrape, and the loosened rope drops into the dust beside him.

The Bound Merchant

The Bound Merchant

Six riders, perhaps seven. All carried curved swords, and two had short bows. Their leather was patched, but their horses were good and their discipline was better than common thieves.

Zamanie

Zamanie

That matches the tracks. They were mounted, equipped for a fast strike, and organized enough to conceal their trail toward the fort.

Zamanie gathers the merchant’s fallen coat while he steadies himself against the marker. The fort remains ahead on the ridge, and the hoofprints leading there are fresh enough to follow.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the raiders’ hill-fort.

Quest Complete

Free the bound merchant.

“7 raiders? That’s it? I think to myself. I can more than handle that. I mount my horse and ride toward the fort, staying out of its direct sight lines.”

Seven raiders? That is all? I can more than handle that.

Sakara mounts the white mare and turns toward the ridgeline. Zamanie follows, leaving the freed merchant beside the broken waymarker as the white mare carries them over dry ground.

She chooses gullies, thorn-shadow, and folds in the hills rather than the open track. Hooves find firm stone, and neither rider offers the fort a clear silhouette.

Zamanie

Zamanie

They have not seen us. The wind carries our trail away from the ridge.

The old hill-fort grows distinct above them, its sun-baked walls broken but defensible. Seven mounted raiders move within the outer yard, their horses tethered near stacked caravan goods.

Sakara reaches the fort’s lee side without entering the riders’ direct sight lines. From the shelter of a dry ravine, she can study the gates, the yard, and the stolen wagons below.

““Stay here” I whisper to Zamanie, and hand her the reigns of my horse. I then sneak through the rocky terrain until I find somewhere I can stay hidden and get all the details of the raiders and their equipment”

Sakara

Stay here. I will find a better view.

Zamanie takes the reins directly from the white mare’s bridle and draws the mare into the ravine’s shadow. Sakara slips away over the rocks, leaving horse and handmaiden concealed.

She threads between sun-warmed stones and thorn scrub, keeping below the fort wall. From a narrow shelf, she finds the raiders clearly: seven riders, curved swords, two short bows, patched leather, and well-kept horses.

Sakara shifts toward a higher cleft, but one loose stone rolls beneath her foot. It strikes the slope below, and a raider snaps his head toward the sound.

Southern Raiders

Hold. Something moved among the rocks.

Sakara freezes beneath an overhang. The riders spread their attention across the lower slope, denying her the high position, but their movement reveals a concealed postern gate behind stacked grain crates.

Zamanie

Zamanie

They are searching the slope. I can lead Moonpearl farther back, or draw them toward the ravine if you need an opening.

“I tell Zamanie to leave and get my horse to safety. Luring them into the rocks is good, as it means they’ll be forced to dismount and I can fight them on foot.”

Sakara

Take Moonpearl farther back and get her to safety. I will draw the raiders into these rocks, where their horses become a liability.

Zamanie

Zamanie

You are certain? Very well. I will put distance between you and the mare, then leave the trail visible enough for them to follow.

Zamanie backs through the ravine, leading Moonpearl beneath deeper thorn-shadow. The mare’s tack gives one muted creak before both disappear beyond the bend, safely away from the fort.

Zamanie

Zamanie

I will do this, but I will remember the choice. If you fall into their hands, I will have to explain why I carried your horse away instead of staying to help.

The raiders hear movement retreating through the ravine. Two leave the yard to investigate while the others watch the rocks, their attention narrowing toward the concealed postern.

Sakara slips lower along the shelf, then lets a pebble skitter across open stone. The nearest raider, a young adult man with a wiry build, sun-browned skin, a crooked nose, and a dark red headcloth beneath his patched leather cap, points toward the sound, and his companions begin threading between the boulders.

There! Spread out. She is alone, and the horse is gone.

“Perfect. I strike from the shadows of the rocks and cut down the nearest raider”

Sakara folds into the rocks as the nearest raider advances. Her glaive slides free without a scrape, its edge finding the narrow gap between his guarded movements.

She strikes from shadow. The blow lands cleanly, and the raider drops at once among the stones, his curved sword clattering beyond his reach.

The Raiders

The Raiders

He is down! Find her before she reaches the wall!

The remaining raiders recoil, then spread wider through the boulders. Their horses stamp and pull at the distant tethers, turning the broken ground into a maze of startled movement.

From her concealed angle, Sakara hears six sets of boots searching the rocks and the postern gate left briefly unwatched behind the grain crates.

The Raiders

The Raiders

Circle the stones! Do not let the assassin vanish!

“I leap out, using the length of my glaive as leverage to cleave through two more”

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The Merchant Beneath the Waymarker

Sakara launches from the overhang, using the glaive’s long haft as a lever. She twists through the opening and sweeps the blade across two raiders before they can raise their swords.

The two raiders crumple among the stones, their weapons skidding away. Sakara lands beyond them with the glaive already drawn back into guard.

The Raiders

The Raiders

Fall back! She has cut through the line!

Four surviving raiders retreat toward the grain crates, abandoning their encirclement. Their horses rear at the sudden movement, tangling the yard into noise and confusion.

The postern gate stands exposed now. Beyond it, a narrow stair descends beneath the fort wall, while the stolen wagons block the raiders’ cleanest route.

The Raiders

The Raiders

Bar the postern! Do not let her into the fort!

One raider lunges for the grain crates, but another horse tears free of its tether and crashes between them. The postern remains open as the survivors scramble around it.

“I lift my blindfold, staring at the fleeing raider and turning him to stone, before sprinting after the others to strike them down as well. It’s been a good moment since I’ve gotten to slaughter like this. The petrifying gaze is innate, so it doesn’t take much focus”

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -3)

The Merchant Beneath the Waymarker

Sakara lifts the blindfold. Her petrifying gaze catches the fleeing raider before he reaches the crates, and his scrambling body hardens into pale stone beside the postern.

She drops the blindfold back into place and surges through the horse-choked yard. The glaive flashes in tight arcs, forcing the three remaining raiders away from the gate.

The Raiders

The Raiders

Fall back! She is on us!

Sakara reaches them before they can regroup. One sweeping cut knocks a sword aside, the haft catches another across the ribs, and the final raider falls beneath a precise strike.

The yard goes still except for frightened horses and the creak of loose leather. Stone seals the first raider’s desperate reach, while the other three lie disarmed and motionless among the crates.

The last exchange jars Sakara’s wrist and scrapes her knuckles against a rough wagon board. She keeps the glaive raised as dust settles over the opened postern stair.

No more. We yield.
