Three Banners Awaiting Choice
Ilyan Voss
Ilyan Voss

The northern encampment rises across the frost-bright plain in disciplined rows, its canvas, pennants, and painted shields almost entirely white. Moon Dragon soldiers drill between cookfires and supply lines as Sakara returns with the other agents.

Her moon-scaled glaive remains across her back. She keeps her torn shoulder guarded beneath dark silk, while the camp’s orderly rhythm parts around the returning assassin.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

There she is. The northern foothold has held, though every negotiation has stalled at the same question.

A young adult man, with warm brown skin and close-cropped black hair steps from the command pavilion, lean and sharp-featured beneath a white cloak edged in silver. Ink stains mark his fingers, and a ring of keys hangs at his belt.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss, keeper of the northern accounts. The tribes will trade with us, but they will not yet accept Kendathar’s protection as a shared cause.

Behind him, white-clad soldiers lower their practice blades and glance toward the pavilion. Maps cover its central table, marked with tribal boundaries, water routes, and several circles awaiting a decision.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

The agents have narrowed the choice to three approaches: tribute, protection, or a formal gathering. Which banner should I prepare for your arrival?

““Hold off on a decision for now. I must see our mystics. My shoulder is wounded and I could use some magical healing” I’m surprised this soldier is being so respectful. As a gorgon, I’m not used to being treated kindly in any sense”

Sakara

Hold off on a decision for now. I must see your mystics. My shoulder is wounded, and I could use magical healing.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

Of course. The mystics are in the western pavilion. I will have them receive you immediately.

Ilyan turns from the maps and leads Sakara across the orderly camp. He gives no command to hurry her, matching his pace to the guarded movement of her wounded shoulder.

The western pavilion smells of cedar, crushed herbs, and warm stone. Three robed mystics await beside a low table, their pale sashes marked with silver moonbursts.

Northern Mystics

Northern Mystics

Settle your shoulder beneath the moonstone. We will mend what can be mended, without asking you to surrender your strength.

Sakara lowers herself beside the table. Silver warmth passes through torn flesh and strained muscle; the wound closes cleanly, leaving only a fading ache and restored use.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

There. No decision is required today. When you are ready, the northern tribes will still be waiting to hear Kendathar’s terms.

Sakara

Sakara

They offer courtesy without demanding weakness in return.

“*I disrobe to the nude, to make the healing process easier, and allow myself to be tended by the mystics. I can tell from their white draconic masks, marked with the moon sigil, they are some of our best*”

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +2)

Three Banners Awaiting Choice

Sakara removes her silk and sets it beside the table, leaving herself unencumbered beneath the mystics’ attentive care. Their white draconic masks bear identical silver moon sigils.

The Northern Mystics guide her shoulder beneath the moonstone without hesitation or awkwardness. Their hands remain precise and professional as silver light gathers over the healing flesh.

Northern Mystics

Northern Mystics

Breathe steadily. The mending will follow the body’s pattern, and nothing of your strength will be taken from you.

Warmth sinks through muscle and skin. The last tightness leaves Sakara’s shoulder, while the moonstone dims from bright silver to a quiet pearl.

Sakara

Sakara

Their masks carry the mark of disciplined service, not ceremonial display.

Northern Mystics

Northern Mystics

The shoulder is sound. Dress when you wish, and carry your weapon without restraint.

The mystics withdraw to give Sakara privacy. The pavilion settles into cedar-scented quiet, her body restored and the path back to the waiting negotiations unobstructed.

“I redress and return to my tent to freshen up with my perfume and review what tribes we have left. 2 have agreed to meet with us, and there are 10 in total. I check to see if Kendethar’s other agents have made progress getting anymore”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Three Banners Awaiting Choice

Sakara redresses in dark silk and returns to her tent. Outside, the white camp keeps its disciplined rhythm, soldiers moving between watchfires and supply lines.

Inside, she freshens her scales and living serpents with a measured touch of perfume. The rich scent cuts through the camp’s frost and smoke, restoring a little luxury to the evening.

Sakara

Sakara

Two tribes have agreed to meet. Eight remain undecided.

Ilyan’s account book lies open beside the maps, its neat columns separating the ten tribes by response. Two entries bear silver marks for meetings accepted; eight remain without commitment.

The latest notes show progress elsewhere: one agent has secured a meeting with a river tribe, while another reports that a mountain chief will receive terms after the next moonrise. The remaining reports are cautious, but not failures.

Sakara reviews the routes, names, and loyalties until the arrangement is clear. Kendathar’s agents have moved two more tribes toward negotiation, leaving six still to be approached without a confirmed opening.

The perfume settles around her as she closes the book. The northern campaign has four tribes in motion and six remaining prospects, its next choices made legible before she leaves the tent.

“I call over my hand handmaiden, a Tiefling, Zamanie, about my age, but much more voluptuous, and dressed in a revealing servants dress, and ask her to bring me a bottle of wine and a sending stone”

Zamanie

At Sakara’s call, her handmaiden approaches through the tent’s lamplit quiet. Zamanie is a young adult tiefling woman, about Sakara’s age, with a voluptuous build, curved horns, dark red skin, amber-eyed with a long black braid and a small silver nose ring, and a neatly tailored crimson servant’s dress.

Sakara

Sakara

Zamanie, bring me a bottle of wine and a sending stone.

Zamanie

Zamanie

At once, mistress. I know where both are kept.

Zamanie slips from the tent with practiced efficiency. Outside, the camp’s watchfires flicker across the frost while soldiers continue their measured rounds.

She returns carrying a dark glass bottle sealed with silver wax and a smooth sending stone wrapped in blue cloth. She places both within Sakara’s reach beside the open account book.

Zamanie

Zamanie

The wine is from the southern stores, and the stone is charged. It should carry a message cleanly tonight.

Sakara

Sakara

Thank you, Zamanie. How have things been at camp while I was away?

Zamanie

Zamanie

Busy, mistress, but orderly. The soldiers have kept watch without trouble, and the stores remain sufficient.

Zamanie folds her hands over her crimson dress. Lamplight catches her silver nose ring as she considers the account carefully, choosing facts over flattery.

Zamanie

Zamanie

The western patrol found no raiders. Two tribal messengers arrived, and both accepted invitations to speak with Ilyan.

Beyond the tent, boots pass in steady rhythm and a sentry calls the hour. The camp sounds watchful rather than strained, its routines holding beneath the cold sky.

Zamanie

Zamanie

There has been no crisis, mistress. The camp waits for your direction, and Ilyan has kept the negotiations ready for whenever you return.

✓ Quest Accepted

Bring the northern tribes into submission.

Sakara

You’re studied in these people, correct? Or at least familiar. Which tribe should we contact next?

Zamanie

Zamanie

The river tribe. Their messenger already accepted Ilyan’s invitation, and their leaders value practical arrangements over grand promises.

Zamanie uncorks the wine and pours carefully, then taps one ink-marked route on the open account book. Her certainty is measured, not performative.

Zamanie

Zamanie

I know the river clans better than most here. Their trade depends on keeping every powerful neighbor useful, so protection will interest them if it leaves their routes in their own hands.

Sakara

Sakara

The river route offers an invitation already accepted, but its loyalties still need checking.

Zamanie

Zamanie

I cannot vouch for which river chief holds the final authority. That detail has changed since I left the Isles, and Ilyan should confirm it before you make the approach.

“I sip from the wine. It’s exactly to my tastes. “I suppose the river tribe it is then. Fetch Ilyan for me. I want an update on our amassing military before I set off””

Sakara sips the southern wine. Its dark fruit, measured sweetness, and warm finish match her tastes precisely, a small luxury amid the camp’s austere order.

I suppose the river tribe it is, then. Fetch Ilyan for me. I want an update on our amassing military before I set off.

Zamanie

Zamanie

At once, mistress. He will come directly. Though pulling him from the accounts will make this your request to answer for, not merely mine.

Zamanie sets the bottle beside the maps and leaves. Minutes later, Ilyan enters with his account book tucked beneath one arm, his expression composed but intent.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

You called for the military report. The foothold is secure, our stores are sufficient, and roughly two dozen soldiers can reinforce the river route without weakening the camp’s watches.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

The larger force is still assembling. More troops are expected from the northern passes, but their arrival depends on the tribes we bring into negotiation. The river meeting could materially improve that timetable.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

I will prepare the route and the ledgers. Since you summoned me personally, I will also tell the officers that this deployment carries your direct authority.

He closes the book, leaving the cost plainly stated: the troops can move, but their commitment will now bear Sakara’s name as well as Kendathar’s.

✓ Quest Accepted

Meet the river chief alone

““I will meet the river chief alone. Securing this landing is more important. As you know, not all the tribes have been so accepting of us.” I call for Zamanie to prepare my horse”

I will meet the river chief alone. Securing this landing matters more than displaying strength, especially when not every tribe has welcomed us.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

Then you will go alone. I will mark the deployment under your authority, but no escort will follow unless you request one.

Ilyan opens the account book and draws a clean line beneath the river route. His expression remains measured, though the decision plainly alters the camp’s risk.

Sakara

Sakara

Zamanie. Prepare my horse. I leave as soon as the route and message are ready.

Zamanie answers from beyond the tent, then moves briskly through the camp. Soon leather tack creaks outside, followed by the quiet stamp of a saddled horse.

Zamanie

Zamanie

Your horse is ready, mistress. I have packed water, a travel cloak, and the sealed invitation for the river chief.

Meet the river chief alone

“I board my horse, a strong white mare that was a gift from the Moon Prince himself, and do a couple laps around the encampment, ensuring everything is as it should be and secure”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -4)

Sakara mounts the strong white mare, an adult horse with a broad muzzle and dark eyes, gifted by Kendathar and guides her into a measured circuit around the encampment. Hooves press crisp tracks into the frost as she listens past the camp’s orderly noise.

The first lap shows steady patrols, covered stores, and soldiers drilling between watchfires. Yet the repeating rows and pale banners distort Sakara’s sense of distance, making one section seem more secure than it is.

Sakara

Sakara

The camp sounds orderly, but the western line is difficult to place.

On the next circuit, the mare’s forehoof catches a low guide-rope Sakara has failed to detect. The white mare shies hard, dragging the rope free and scattering a stack of signal pennants.

Moon Dragon Soldiers

Loose line at the western stores! Secure the markers before the wind takes them!

The disturbance reveals that the western watch markers were poorly anchored and partly hidden beneath frost. Soldiers rush to reset them, while the white mare stamps and tosses her head beneath Sakara.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

The line is restored, but your inspection found a genuine weakness. I will have the western perimeter marked and checked before you depart.

The circuit ends without a reliable security assessment. The camp remains intact, but the exposed western line now demands correction before Sakara can safely leave for the river settlement.
