Marrek leads Sakara and Veyra across the Gold Order’s council hall, while Tarek remains in the practice yard with his recovered sword. High reliefs of dragons watch from the walls.

The wax seal on the Red Tide’s message warms in Veyra’s hand. A thin red glow leaks through its impressions, and the fortress stones answer with a deep pulse beneath their feet.

A ceremonial dragon relief splits open behind the council dais. Stone grinds aside, revealing stairs descending into an undercrypt wrapped in ancient warding chains.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Stop there. This is Red Tide sorcery. You brought their influence into our fortress, and now the mountain answers it.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

No. I know this pressure. It stirred the basin beneath my shrine, before any seal was opened. Something below us is answering the same old call.

The chains tremble without breaking, shedding flakes of blackened metal onto the first steps. Red light threads between them, while dust drifts from the vaulted ceiling.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Then the undercrypt will tell us whose call it is. Veyra, keep that message sealed. Sakara, stay where I can see you.

““I did not come here to negotiate with your order. The last envoy we sent was met with death from your tribe. I am the consequences of that choice. Submit. Or else””

I did not come here to negotiate with your order. The last envoy we sent was met with death from your tribe. I am the consequences of that choice. Submit. Or else.

Sakara’s ultimatum settles beneath the vaulted ceiling. Her glaive remains across her back, but the moon-scaled haft catches the undercrypt’s red glow. Veyra holds the sealed message motionless.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

You mistake a hearing for surrender. Your victory over Tarek purchased an audience, not the obedience of the Gold Order.

Marrek draws his sword and plants its point against the first stair, barring the descent without striking. His gold mask turns toward Sakara, and the gate chains groan overhead.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

Sakara, he is not yielding. But neither is he attacking. Let the undercrypt judge the old call before blood makes the choice for us.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Here are my terms. The message stays sealed, and you surrender your glaive until the crypt’s ward recognizes its bearer. Refuse, and the Gold Order names you an intruder.

The red threads between the chains flare brighter, answering neither threat nor allegiance. Marrek’s terms turn the standoff into a test of access: the way below remains open, but only under the Order’s control.

You seem a talented warrior. I would hate to end your journey here. Surely you have heard what happens when an assassin of the Moon Prince comes for you.

The threat settles more heavily than a shouted command. Marrek’s sword remains planted for one breath, then he withdraws it from the stair and steps aside.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

I have heard enough tales to know when one is standing before the real danger. Descend. The undercrypt will judge your weapon and your claim together.

The warding chains slacken as Sakara approaches, red light sliding across the moon-scaled glaive without resisting it. The stairs lie open beneath the council hall.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

You have won access, Sakara, but understand the price. The Gold Order will remember this as a threat, not a courtesy.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Your name and warning will be entered into our records. If the crypt accepts you, I will report that plainly. If it does not, every gate in this fortress will know you as an enemy.

Marrek points down the ancient stair. Veyra keeps the sealed message close and follows, while the fortress watches Sakara’s passage with newly suspicious silence.

Sakara descends the ancient stair with measured ease, one hand grazing the cold wall while her glaive rests securely across her back. The red threads fade beneath her steps.

At the bottom, the stair opens into a vast undercrypt of black pillars and moon-pale dust. Ancient chains coil around a sealed stone dais, their rusted links now hanging utterly still.

The moon-scaled glaive answers first. Silver light travels along its edge, and symbols awaken across the dais, forming a circle beneath Sakara’s feet without touching her.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

The ward recognizes the weapon. Not the Red Tide seal, not the Gold Order. Your prince’s mark opened the way.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

Then this place remembers the moon-born sovereign as well. The old call reaches farther than my shrine ever knew.

A low resonance moves through the crypt, less a threat than a summons. Dust lifts from the sealed dais, revealing a narrow inscription beneath Sakara’s boots.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

You have reached the undercrypt, Sakara. Read what it offers, and the Gold Order will witness the answer beside you.

“I read the runes. They are in draconic, the language I was raised speaking by Kendethar”

FAILURE (Fair Reasoning, rolled -2)

Sakara bends over the inscription and traces the raised draconic runes with her fingertips. Kendathar taught her the language before she learned to wield his glaive, and the forms are unmistakable.

Sakara

Sakara

The grammar is familiar, but the words will not hold still in my understanding.

She reads the first line aloud only in her mind. Its symbols describe a sovereign beneath the mountain, then fracture into older forms whose meanings overlap: bound, invited, remembered.

The silver circle beneath her feet contracts. Several runes sink into the dais, and the remaining inscription seals behind a thin film of black stone before she can resolve its final clause.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

You recognized the tongue, but not the judgment. The ward has hidden the rest from you.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

It did not reject her. It showed enough to prove the old sovereign was bound here, then closed its mouth.

A single rune remains exposed beneath Sakara’s hand, warm with moon-pale light. It is not a sentence but a seal-mark, shaped like an eye crossed by a chain.

“I’m by no means a master in Runes, but it seems like it wants an aspect of the moon. I touch my moon dragon scale glaive to it”

The seal wants an aspect of the moon, not a perfect reading.

Sakara draws the Moon Dragon’s Wrath Glaive from her back and lowers its moon-scaled edge to the eye-and-chain mark. Silver answers silver; the seal accepts the touch.

The black film liquefies into pale radiance. Chains around the dais unwind, revealing a deep circular well where a bound moonlit shape rests beneath layers of ancient stone.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

You opened it. The ward was not guarding a treasure. It was holding something beneath the mountain.

A cold current surges up the glaive and brands the seal-mark into its haft. The weapon remains whole, but its silver glow gutters, leaving the ancient binding to draw power from the blade.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

The old sovereign is below us, still bound. Your weapon paid for the opening, Sakara. The crypt has accepted your claim, but it has taken a piece of its light.

The well settles into silence. Beneath the stone, something vast shifts once, and the loosened chains draw a new circle around Sakara’s feet, marking her as witness to the prison.

“I see now. Kendethar has told me of these places. Dragon hearts. Ancient dragons are often too powerful to fully manifest in the material plane. So the lock a way a portion of themselves to still except control. The solution to my problem is to kill this heart, ensuring that it cannot influence this part of the Ruby Isles. I descend deeper into the crypt”

Sakara

Sakara

I see now. Kendathar has told me of places like this. Dragon hearts let ancient dragons influence the material plane through a fragment of themselves. I will destroy this one.

Sakara steps into the loosened circle and descends into the well. Moon-pale stone narrows around her, while the bound heart below, an ancient dragon’s heart marked by a jagged scar across its surface pulses with dim, imprisoned light.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

Sakara, that heart may be ancient beyond reckoning. If you destroy it, whatever remains of the sovereign’s reach here will end with it.

Her boots strike the buried chamber floor. The heart hangs within ribs of black crystal, vast and translucent, its slow beat pulling the surrounding chains taut.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Do it, then. Let the Gold Order witness whether the Moon Prince’s instrument can break what this mountain has guarded for ages.

Sakara drives the Moon Dragon’s Wrath Glaive into the heart and wrenches downward. The crystal ribs split; the heart collapses into dead silver ash, and the chains fall slack.

The force tears Sakara’s shoulder and drops her to one knee, glaive trapped beneath her. Above, the prison’s red glow dies completely, leaving only her harsh breathing in the dark.

“Is this the heart of the gold dragon this tribe was inflicted by?”

NO (Unlikely, rolled 70)

The dead silver ash lies still beneath the loosened crystal ribs. No golden radiance, heraldic mark, or familiar draconic pressure answers from the ruined prison.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

No. That was not the heart of the dragon who afflicted our tribe. The ward predates our oldest records, and its captive bore no sign of gold.

Marrek’s certainty comes without triumph. He lowers his sword and stares into the empty chamber, while the fortress stones settle around a mystery older than the Gold Order.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

Then this prison was never the wound your tribe remembers. The old sovereign beneath it was a separate power, sealed here before your grievance began.

The conclusion strips the Gold Order’s accusation of its force. The Red Tide seal did not awaken their enemy, and Kendathar’s glaive did not destroy the source of the tribe’s affliction.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

You have not cured our inheritance, moon-born. But you have proven this crypt is not its origin. That distinction will be entered into our records.

Above, the undercrypt remains open and silent. The Gold Order must now seek the true source elsewhere, while Sakara’s claim stands strengthened by a truth neither side expected.

“Is this the heart of a gold dragon?”

NO, AND WORSE (VeryUnlikely, rolled 84)

The silver ash darkens instead of dispersing. Beneath it, a second pattern emerges in the stone: overlapping gold scales surrounding a sunless brand, far newer than the prison itself.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

No. It was never a gold dragon’s heart. Worse, the binding was suppressing the mark that afflicted our tribe.

A pulse rolls through the buried chamber. Above, answering cracks race along the fortress foundations, and a thin golden haze leaks from the stairwell, carrying the bitter scent of scorched metal.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

You destroyed the wrong prison, Sakara. Whatever poisoned the Gold Order was not inside it. Now the seal that restrained the poison is gone.

The gold pattern flares, and distant bells begin to ring through the mountain. Marrek’s sword hand tightens as muffled voices rise above, followed by the scrape of many hurried boots.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

The fortress is waking against us. If that haze reaches the upper halls, every warrior in my order may become its vessel.

The ruined chamber offers no answer and no surviving heart, only widening golden fractures beneath Sakara and the rising alarm of a fortress whose ancient safeguard has failed.

“Is this heart the one likely to be influencing the tribe I’m trying to conquer in kendethar’s name?”

NO (VeryUnlikely, rolled 50)

The oracle’s answer settles through the buried chamber with stark simplicity: no. The heart was not the thing influencing the tribe Sakara seeks to bring beneath Kendathar’s alliance.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Then the heart was never the source of our affliction. Your purpose was aimed at the wrong prisoner, though not without consequence.

The conclusion separates the ancient prison from the Gold Order’s suffering. The dead heart belonged to an older secret, while the gold-marked influence remains a later and distinct danger.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

The ward held something ancient, but it did not command the tribe. Whatever reaches through the golden mark came from elsewhere, or was placed here afterward.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

The Gold Order’s enemy remains unidentified. At least this much is clear: the Moon Prince’s envoy did not destroy its source.

No hidden answer rises from the ruined chamber. The oracle has closed that question cleanly, leaving the tribe’s true affliction unresolved and the ancient heart’s influence ruled out.

“Well, it is the case that this heart was struck down by an agent of the Moon Prince. His power is one hundred fold mind. Surely you can now see the benefit of your order joinign with us”

This heart was struck down by an agent of the Moon Prince. His power is a hundredfold greater than anything your order commands. Surely you can now see the benefit of joining us.

Sakara’s claim hangs above the dead silver ash. Her injured shoulder stays guarded beneath her clothing, but her voice carries cleanly through the fractured chamber.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

She offers strength without pretending this ruin solved our oldest wound. That is more honest than most envoys manage.

Veyra Ashmark

Veyra Ashmark

Her argument is sound. The Moon Prince destroyed what the Gold Order could not even reach, and she has spoken plainly about what remains unknown.

Marrek lowers his sword completely. Above, the golden haze thins along the stair, and the alarm bells fall into an uncertain, scattered silence.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

Very well. The Gold Order will join negotiations for Kendathar’s alliance. We will exchange intelligence, accept his protection, and judge the terms as partners rather than subjects.

Marrek Sol

Marrek Sol

I will record this decision before the council. Your prince has earned a hearing, Sakara, and the Gold Order will meet him as an ally.

““Good. Should the negations go well, I doubt he will have any issue sensing you support in the future” I leave, returning to the outpost of Kendethar’s army up in the northern islands of the Ruby Isles (Kendethar isn’t there, but other agents, citizens and soldiers of his are)”
