Sealing the Chamber Beneath the Chapel
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Below the chapel floor, Ghost hangs in a cramped stone chamber as dust sifts through the open hatch. Above, the hunters pound and shout, and the ritual light skews sickly toward the gap.

The Hidden Presence points at rusted iron levers sunk into the wall. Beside them waits a central lock, black with age, and Ghost sees the Caretaker's key ring in their grasp.

Ghost takes the ring. One key slides home at once, as if the chapel has been waiting for this exact hand. The mechanism turns with a wet groan of metal and old stone.

Malakor

Malakor

Yes. That is it. The caretaker knew these locks.

Ghost throws the levers together. Somewhere deep in the walls, wards answer with a heavy, closing thud. The hatch above trembles as the chamber seals itself away from the asylum above.

The muffled shouts turn distant, muffled by stone and sorcery. Dust keeps falling, but the pressure in the air shifts, no longer hunting, only waiting.

The road back is cut. If the hunters open that hatch again, they will meet the seal first.

Then a final scrape answers from the dark wall beside the levers, like something inside the chapel has noticed the lock waking up.

Ghost studies the key ring, noticing that the iron teeth of the keys shift and reshape themselves to match the ancient, rusted tumblers of the chapel lock. The metal seems to recognize the architecture of this place, as if the Caretaker's keys were forged from the same dark, subterranean iron as the chapel itself.

Malakor

Malakor

They are not just keys for a door, Ghost. They are keys for the entire foundation. My name is Malakor, and I have waited ages for someone to bring these back to the heart of the stone.

I hand Malakor the keys so they can use them

Ghost lowers the key ring into Malakor’s waiting hand. The twisted teeth quiver, then settle against its palm as if they remember it.

Malakor

Malakor

At last. The stone takes me seriously again.

Malakor closes their fingers around the metal and bows their head toward Ghost, relief softening their wary posture.

Malakor

Malakor

You did not leave me to rot in the dark. That matters.

The keys are in Malakor’s hand now.

Above them, a heavy thunk rolls through the chapel floor, muffled by distance and stone. The ash ring on the altar gives one dull pulse.

If they test the seal, it will answer. If it holds, we have a little time.
