The Hidden Presence

Wind carries Ghost far from the asylum road and drops them over a lonely chapel of black stone. Dawn barely touches the roof. Moss slicks the walls, and the air tastes of wet earth, old incense, and dust that has not moved in years.

They slip through a broken lancet window and gather shape inside the nave. Empty pews lean in the dimness. A cracked altar waits beneath a pale stain of light.

For a moment, nothing moves. No chanting. No boots. Only the hush of the chapel, heavy enough to press against Ghost’s smoke-body.

Ghost

Ghost

The chapel is sealed off from the road.

Then the silence answers back. From deep under the floor, a slow knocking travels up through the stone, soft at first, then steady, like someone testing a coffin lid from beneath.

At the altar, a thin line of ash stirs into a circle no wind should make. The chapel stays empty, but the circle keeps forming anyway.

I sit silently in a pew and leave whatever will happen to happen

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost settles into the nearest pew without a sound, smoke folding low and still. The chapel does not lunge or cry out. It only holds its breath around them.

The knocking beneath the floor keeps its patient rhythm, but the altar circle stops widening. Ash lies in a thin ring, as if the stone itself has decided to wait.

Malakor

Malakor

Not a hunter. Not yet. Just another witness.

Dust sifts from the rafters. In the side light, the chapel looks less like a refuge and more like a room that has been left alone for too long.

Malakor

Malakor

If you mean to leave, you can. If you mean to stay, stay quietly.

Nothing in the chapel bars Ghost’s rest. The silence feels old, but not hostile, and the ash keeps its shape instead of reaching for them.

Malakor

Malakor

The house is calm today. I cannot say the same for what is beneath it.

Learn whether the chapel is a true refuge

I stay seated, offering the hidden presence a silent face that's willing to listen

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost stays seated and lets the silence be a gift instead of a test. The ash does not stir. The knocking below keeps its measured patience, as if waiting to be invited in.

Malakor

Malakor

That is kinder than most answers I get.

A pause follows, long enough for dust to drift past the altar and settle on the stone.

Malakor

Malakor

I have been under this chapel so long that I know its cracks by sound. It was not built to keep everything out. It was built to keep something in.

Ghost

Ghost

The floor and the altar are keeping different secrets.

Malakor

Malakor

Still, it has done one honest thing tonight. It has not lied about being cold.

The ashes on the altar remain in a clean ring, untouched by the faint draft moving through the nave. For this moment, the chapel holds its shape and its hush.

Malakor

Malakor

Stay if you want. Listen if you can. I would rather share this quiet than break it alone.

I pat the seat next to me, offering them a seat so i may continue listening

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost leans down and pats the pew beside them, a small invitation offered into the chapel’s hush.

Malakor

Malakor

You make room for me like it is ordinary.

Malakor

Malakor

It has been a long time since anyone in this place offered ordinary.

The knocking shifts, then softens. A shadow gathers where the floorboards meet the stone, as if something below has chosen to listen from closer now.

Malakor

Malakor

I cannot cross the floor, not the way you mean. But I can come near enough to share the bench of silence.

Dust drops from the rafters in a pale thread. The ash ring on the altar stays intact, but the cold in the nave loosens by a fraction, less like a prison and more like a held breath.

Malakor

Malakor

This chapel has kept me alive. That is not the same as letting me go.

Malakor

Malakor

Still, while you sit there, I do not feel hunted. That matters.

I listen for any sign of hunters outside

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost stills their smoke and listens toward the chapel doors. Nothing outside answers, only the chapel itself, a faint creak in the stone and the hush of dust settling over the pews.

Ghost

Ghost

The sound does not carry past the walls.

Then the quiet breaks, not from outside, but from under Ghost’s feet. The knocking does not quicken. It stops as if someone below has heard the listening and withdrawn.

Malakor

Malakor

Do not mistake this stillness for safety.

Malakor

Malakor

A refuge can be sealed by mercy, or by hunting. I know which this place prefers.

A hard scrape answers from deeper in the chapel, wood dragging once against stone. The ash ring on the altar shivers, and a thin draft threads under the door, carrying no voices, no boots, no breath.

Malakor

Malakor

If anything comes for you, it will have to come through me first. That is all I can promise.

I nod and continue to rest in silence

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost gives a small nod and lets their smoke settle low against the pew. The chapel answers with the same hush, old stone holding the silence instead of breaking it.

Malakor

Malakor

Then rest. If this place means to keep you, let it prove it by staying still.

I let my gaurd diwn complete as i begin to sleep

SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled +3)

The Knocking Beneath the Altar
The Hidden Presence
The Hidden Presence

Ghost loosens into the dark of the pew, smoke thinning, folding, sinking. The chapel accepts the weight of them without a creak.

Malakor

Malakor

It stills... good. The quiet holds you better than fear does.

A little ash sifts from the altar ring and hangs in the air instead of falling. In that suspended drift, faint lines show under the altar cloth, old chalk marks hidden from ordinary eyes.

Malakor

Malakor

See that? Not all seals are walls. Some are covers. This one was meant to hide a thing below and keep eyes above from asking.

Ghost sinks deeper into sleep, and the chapel does not resist. The draft under the door softens, then turns aside, as if meeting a barrier outside the threshold.

Malakor

Malakor

The air outside tastes wrong sometimes. Not tonight. Tonight, it stops at the stone.

Sleep takes Ghost cleanly. In the hush, the ash ring remains unbroken, and the hidden lines beneath it glow once, briefly, like a blessing that answers back.
