The Young Woman

Maya and Fin reach the culvert's west outlet beneath a gray morning sky. A young woman steps from behind a concrete drainage barrier, hands raised, while a battered school bag rests at her feet.

Robin

Robin

Easy. I'm not looking for trouble. I recognized those route markings, and I've been trying to get out of town.

She is eighteen, average height and build, with fair skin, messy brown hair, and cool gray eyes. Her worn school clothes and scuffed bag look painfully out of place among the weeds and concrete.

Robin

Robin

If you're heading west, don't trust everything you've heard about New Hope. It isn't what people say, and I was going to warn you before...

Movement stirs behind her in the weeds. Several figures push through the dead grass, uneven and slow, their attention fixed on the living at the outlet.

Fin

Fin

Maya, stay back.

Robin

Robin

Those aren't alone. There are more behind them.

Learn whether New Hope is safe

“I keep low and run along the fading footprints, away from the undead.”

The Young Woman

Maya drops low and runs along the fading footprints, putting the concrete outlet and the undead behind her. Loose gravel skitters beneath her boots as she gains the weeds.

A jutting slab catches Maya's shin hard enough to scrape skin and stagger her, but she keeps her balance. The footprints lead beyond the barrier and onto a narrow service path.

Fin

Fin

Maya's clear. Keep moving!

Fin backs after her, rifle trained toward the weeds, while the young woman snatches up her school bag and follows. The approaching dead stumble into the open behind them.

Robin

Robin

There! The path bends around the drainage wall. They can't keep up if we stay low.

Maya reaches the bend and slips behind the drainage wall, fully away from the approaching dead. Her scraped shin stings, but the path ahead is open and the footprints continue west.

Get the group through the maintenance yard

“Is Robin warning us about a real danger?”

The service path narrows beside the drainage wall, but the footprints stop at a collapsed chain-link gate. Beyond it, the route ends against a locked maintenance yard.

Robin

Robin

No. That's not supposed to be here. I came through this way before.

Robin's denial comes too quickly. Behind the fence, fresh footprints cross the dust toward a propped-open service door, while the approaching dead gather at the bend behind them.

Fin

Fin

You said you were getting out. You didn't say you led us into a yard with one way in and one way out.

Robin

Robin

My name is Robin. I thought the gate would still be open. I didn't know the dead were following me.

The first approaching dead reaches the bend and turns toward them. More shapes press through the weeds behind it, closing the path while the open service door waits inside the fenced yard.

Robin

Robin

There is another exit through the building. I swear. But we have to get inside before they reach the gate.

“I sprint through the propped-open service door with Fin and Robin.”

Maya sprints through the propped-open service door, with Fin and Robin close behind. Her shoulder clips the metal frame hard, leaving a hot bruise, but she keeps moving into the maintenance yard.

Fin

Fin

Inside. Keep going, don't stop in the doorway!

Fin crosses the threshold and swings her rifle toward the gate. Robin stumbles through after her, clutching her school bag as the first dead reaches the chain-link opening.

Robin

Robin

Close it, or we're going to have a whole crowd in here!

The three survivors are inside the fenced yard. The service door hangs open behind them, revealing concrete corridors and stacked equipment, while four dead press toward the gate outside.

Fin

Fin

Robin, find the inner latch. Maya, stay with me and watch that entrance.

“I find the inner latch for Robin”

Maya cuts across the maintenance yard toward Robin, scanning the concrete wall and stacked equipment. A recessed metal panel catches her eye beneath a flaking safety sign, its handle half-hidden by dust.

She clears the panel with her sleeve and finds a red-painted inner latch. The mechanism is stiff but intact, and its lever connects to the service door's heavy lock bar.

Maya Gonzales

Maya Gonzales

The latch is here.

Robin

Robin

You found it? Good. Tell me what to pull.

Maya points out the lever and braces the panel open. Robin drops her school bag, grabs the handle, and yanks it downward; the inner lock bar slams into place.

Fin

Fin

That buys us a door. Now move away from the entrance before those things find another way through.

The service door seals with a grinding clang. Outside, the approaching dead crowd against the chain-link gate, while the secured yard opens toward a dim corridor between equipment sheds.

Robin

Robin

All right. The other exit is through the main shed. If it is blocked, I am officially blaming the route.

Fin keeps her rifle trained on the sealed entrance and gestures toward the corridor. Robin retrieves her bag, then leads them toward the shed's shadowed doorway.

“Is New Hope controlled by hostile survivors?”

NO (Even, rolled 72)

The main shed opens into a long equipment bay. Dust covers the benches and empty lockers, while faded safety notices hang undisturbed; there is no barricade, lookout, or sign of survivors controlling the route.

Robin

Robin

See? Nobody's running this place. If hostile survivors controlled the road to New Hope, they would have marked this entrance or watched it.

Fin enters behind Robin and checks the open bay, then the ceiling catwalk and the dark office windows. Nothing moves except dust drifting through the light.

Fin

Fin

I don't see a human position here. That doesn't make New Hope trustworthy, but it means we aren't walking into a hostile checkpoint.

Beyond the equipment bay, a maintenance corridor runs toward the far side of the shed. A hand-painted evacuation arrow points ahead, and the only threat remains the dead battering the secured gate behind them.

Robin

Robin

The corridor reaches the back road. I used it once before. If the exit is still clear, we can get past this yard without meeting anybody.

Fin shifts her rifle toward the corridor and gives Maya room beside her. Behind them, the approaching dead press against the fence, but no human voice answers from the shed.

“I ask Robin to secure the corridor exit”

Robin, secure the corridor exit.

Robin

Robin

On it. Try not to let anything follow me, okay?

Robin hurries down the maintenance corridor, school bag bouncing against her hip. Fin covers her from the equipment bay while the dead continue battering the secured gate outside.

At the far end, Robin reaches a steel service door beneath the evacuation arrow. She checks the handle, then slides the manual bolt into its receiver and tests it twice.

Robin

Robin

Exit is secured. The door opens onto the back road, and nobody can push through from this side.

Robin returns and points toward the locked door. Fin lowers her rifle slightly, and the corridor now offers a controlled route away from the trapped yard.

Maya takes the lead, moving steadily down the maintenance corridor with one hand near the wall for balance. The mismatched-eyed woman follows close behind, rifle angled toward the empty equipment bay, while Robin keeps pace at the rear.

Robin

Robin

Keep going. The door is locked behind us, and the back road is clear.

Maya reaches the steel service door and checks the corridor through its narrow wired window. Nothing moves beyond it. She signals the mismatched-eyed woman, then works the manual latch Robin secured.

Fin

Fin

I'll cover the road. Robin, stay between us until we clear the yard.

The door opens onto a narrow back road bordered by weeds and broken drainage concrete. Maya leads them through in a low, quick advance, keeping the shed between their path and the secured gate.

Robin

Robin

We're out. This is the road I meant. New Hope's route should be west from here, but we can put distance between us and that yard first.

The mismatched-eyed woman steps through last and pulls the service door shut behind them. Maya, the mismatched-eyed woman, and Robin stand safely on the back road, clear of the maintenance yard and moving onward together.
