The abandoned military checkpoint groans around Maya. Beyond the service door, a cluster of zombies pounds against the metal while a small, slim young woman braces it with a scavenged rifle. Her messy black hair spills from a hoodie, framing mismatched pinkish-purple and blue eyes; a black choker circles her throat.

Maya's hidden bite burns beneath her clothing. The stranger has dragged her inside, found the bloodied mark, and shoved a road map, bandages, and canned food onto a counter while watching her for any change.

I'm Fin. Don't come closer. Not until I know what that bite is doing.

The service door buckles inward. Fin's shoulders tense as she plants one boot against the frame, the rifle wedged crosswise between her and the failing lock.

Fin

Fin

The inner gate opens only from this side, and I'm not gambling with everyone else's life. Show me you're still you.

A laminated map lies open beside the supplies, its western route marked in faded pencil. One circled label reads New Hope. The barricade shudders again, harder than before.

Fin

Fin

Please don't turn before I can decide.

“Can the inner gate be opened while we hold this door?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 63)

Maya throws her weight against the service door beside Fin. The inner gate mechanism clanks, then begins to cycle, while the barricade shudders under the zombies' combined pressure.

Fin

Fin

It's moving. Keep it shut, just a few more seconds!

The effort pulls sharply at Maya's injured body, and the hidden bite burns beneath her clothes. Her boots slide across dust as the failing door bows inward.

Maya Gonzales

Maya Gonzales

The gate is opening.

With a grinding rattle, the inner gate lifts high enough to pass beneath. At the same moment, the service door's lower hinge tears loose, leaving the barricade crooked and weaker.

Fin

Fin

Go through! The door won't hold another impact!

Fin catches the rifle and backs toward the open passage, keeping her mismatched eyes on the buckling entrance. The route to the checkpoint's inner side is clear, but the outer door is seconds from giving way.

“I pass through the inner gate toward New Hope”

Maya slips beneath the rising inner gate and reaches the checkpoint's protected side. Her injured body protests, but her boots find solid concrete beyond the passage.

Fin

Fin

You're through. Keep moving, the inner corridor leads toward the western road.

Fin follows through with the rifle clutched tight, then grabs the chain beside the mechanism. Behind her, the zombies hammer the crooked service door.

Fin

Fin

I can seal this side. New Hope is west, past the old fuel depot.

The inner gate drops with a heavy clang, cutting off the checkpoint's noise. Dust settles across the concrete as the route west opens through a fenced maintenance yard.

Fin points toward a sun-bleached access road beyond the yard. The faded map's penciled route toward New Hope begins there, under a sky turning pale with evening.

“I show Fin my bite and ask for help”

Maya pulls back her sleeve and shows Fin the bite. The skin around it is angry and bruised, but she remains upright, breathing steadily beneath the fading evening light.

Maya Gonzales

Maya Gonzales

Please help me.

Fin

Fin

I want to. I do. But I don't know what to do with a bite, and I can't pretend I do.

Fin steps closer, then stops herself. Her rifle lowers, though her mismatched eyes stay fixed on the wound and her fingers tighten around the strap.

Fin

Fin

There was a maintenance office near the fuel depot. Medical supplies, maybe records. We go there, but you keep the bite covered until I know you're safe.

Fin tears a clean strip from an old undershirt and holds it out without touching Maya. The access road waits beyond the fence, while the checkpoint settles into uneasy silence behind them.

Fin

Fin

I can walk with you to the office. After that, we decide whether New Hope is still possible.

“Ask Fin "Why are you all alone guarding this checkpoint?"”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

Maya Gonzales

Maya Gonzales

Why are you all alone guarding this checkpoint?

Fin glances toward the sealed yard and the access road, rifle hanging at her side. The last daylight catches in her mismatched eyes as she weighs the question.

Fin

Fin

I wasn't supposed to be alone. Three others held this place with me. One got sick, and the other two left for New Hope after the radio stopped answering.

Fin

Fin

I stayed because this checkpoint is the only warning anyone gets before the depot road. If something comes through, I can see it first and close the gate.

She points toward a dark booth beyond the fence, its windows filmed with dust. A hand-marked roster still hangs inside, but several names and dates are too faded to read.

Fin

Fin

I can tell you why I stayed, but I can't tell you whether the others reached New Hope. Checking the roster will cost us the last clean light.

Fin offers the strip of cloth again, then looks west. The answer is clear, but the missing records leave the fate of her companions uncertain as evening deepens.

“I walk with Fin to the maintenance office”

Maya wraps the clean cloth over her bite and follows Fin through the maintenance yard. Their boots crunch over gravel as evening shadows lengthen across the fence.

Fin

Fin

Stay close. The depot road is clear, but I don't want either of us silhouetted out there.

They keep to the fence line, passing rusted fuel pumps and weeds pushing through cracked pavement. Maya's injured side pulls with each stride, but she maintains the pace.

Fin

Fin

There. The office is behind that loading bay. The door should still have a manual latch.

Fin leads Maya beneath the loading-bay awning to a squat concrete office. Dust clouds its narrow windows, and a faded red cross remains painted above the dented door.

Fin tests the handle, then pulls the latch free. The maintenance office opens into darkness, revealing metal shelves, a desk, and a wall cabinet marked with medical symbols.

Maya opens the marked wall cabinet. Dust spills from its hinges, and she searches past empty trays until her fingers find sealed gauze, antiseptic wipes, tape, and a small bottle of antibiotics.

The cabinet shelf catches her forearm as she pulls the supplies free, leaving a sharp scrape and a thin line of blood. The medical pack lands safely in her hand.

Fin

Fin

Good. Keep everything. Maybe the records are still in that desk, too.

Fin moves her rifle toward the office entrance while Maya sets the supplies on the desk. The sealed gauze and antiseptic are clean, but the antibiotic label is faded and partly peeled.

Fin

Fin

Use the wipes first. Then we can clean the bite properly before we decide what that bottle is worth.

Outside, gravel shifts beneath a distant dragging step. Fin turns toward the dusty windows, while the recovered supplies remain spread across the desk within Maya's reach.
