Gray morning light reaches through the maintenance office windows. Maya and Fin sort the water-damaged log beside their water, food, medical supplies, and folded western route map; several pages remain stuck together, and dried mud trails toward the rear exit.

A few minutes. We separate these before we leave. The last entry might tell us whether the sick companion got out alive.

Fin kneels beside the desk and opens the log flat beneath the flashlight. The mud marks are old, but their direction is clear: from the office toward the rear exit, not from the road.

Fin

Fin

I stayed with them here after the other two left for New Hope. If these pages show a departure, it happened after I lost track of the watch notes.

Fin moistens a corner of cloth and works it beneath the first stuck page, lifting by fractions. Ink ghosts across the paper, revealing a time entry and the beginning of a sentence.

Fin

Fin

Easy. If we tear this, we lose the only lead we have. Keep the supplies ready, but don't pack up yet.

The page loosens with a soft crackle. Beneath it, a muddy partial footprint points toward the rear exit, while the next line remains hidden under the damp paper.

Maya checks the rear exit inch by inch, following the dried mud beneath the desk. Dust hides most marks, but a disturbed strip along the threshold catches her eye.

She searches the jamb, floor, and warped shelving, finding a loose board behind the exit. Beneath it rests a folded cloth stained with old mud and a faint brown mark.

Fin

Fin

That wasn't in the open when I checked this room. I never pulled up that board.

Maya lifts the cloth carefully. Its inner fold contains a small brass key and a torn scrap of paper, protected from the damp beneath the board.

The scrap bears a smudged time and two readable words: “culvert” and “alone.” A narrow line of dried mud continues outside toward the drainage path.

Fin

Fin

They left a message. Maybe they reached the culvert, or maybe someone moved them there. Either way, we know where to look.

“I follow the mud trail toward the culvert”

Maya follows the narrow mud trail beyond the rear exit, keeping low along the drainage path. Damp earth gives way to cracked concrete as the culvert comes into view.

Fin follows with her rifle held ready, black hair shifting against her hoodie. She studies the ground while Maya tracks the old impressions beneath weeds and fallen leaves.

Fin

Fin

There. The mud is deeper beside the entrance. Someone stopped here, then went inside.

Maya reaches the culvert entrance and finds the trail ending beneath its shadow. A strip of the same stained cloth is caught on a jagged edge, beside fresh dust disturbed from within.

Fin

Fin

This is where they came. I recognize the cloth, but I never brought them this far. The message was meant to lead here.

The culvert extends beneath the road, cool and dim, with a shallow trickle running through its center. Near the wall, a second muddy footprint points deeper inside.

Fin

Fin

We found the place. Stay beside me, and we can search it carefully.

Fin steps to the culvert mouth and raises her flashlight, illuminating the passage without entering it. The route and its hidden trace are now directly before Maya.

“I search deeper inside the culvert”

Maya steps into the culvert and follows the shallow trickle beneath the road. Fin angles the flashlight past her shoulder, keeping the passage's corners visible.

The second footprint leads to a dry side recess. Maya searches the silt, wall cracks, and ledges, finding a flattened tin cup and a strip of faded cloth.

Behind the cloth, her fingers find a weathered canvas pouch wedged beneath a concrete lip. Inside rests a water-stained identification card, a pencil, and folded paper.

Fin

Fin

That pouch belonged to them. I recognize the stitching. They made it from an old field kit.

Maya opens the folded paper beneath Fin's light. The writing is cramped but readable: “Fever worse. Going alone to the west outlet. If I turn, stay away.”

Fin

Fin

They left while they could still write. The west outlet is beyond the road, and this proves they chose it.

Farther inside, Maya finds the culvert's west outlet marked by fresh daylight and a line of old footprints fading into weeds. The pouch and message are hers to carry.
