Thadeus leads Marcus and Elias from the study into the grand hallway, favoring his shoulder until the ankh ring’s warmth spreads through him. The stiffness fades completely.
They settle among the mahogany pillars and crimson damask panels. Peacebringer rests in its fountain-pen form, while red moonlight lies across the quiet carpet.
On a whim, Thadeus offers Marcus the gold ring. Marcus slips it onto his finger, and warmth gathers beneath the red line around his neck.
The mark softens, liquefies, and melts away without leaving a wound. Marcus exhales shakily, touching his bare skin as the last curse vanishes.

Marcus Thorne
Sally was taken somewhere else in the castle. I heard the robed figures mention an alchemical lab, but I never saw where they brought her.

Elias
Then the lab is our lead. Elizabeth may be there too, and we cannot assume either of them is safe.
Far along the hallway, a faint draft stirs dust beneath a carved arch. Marcus looks toward it, the ankh glowing softly on his finger, and waits.

“While the air around them is calm, Thadeus calls Marla and asks if she's had any luck finding a map or layout of Proserpina. She shares that no two maps she finds are alike, but certain rooms always connect to one another. "For example, Marla continues, "The study always has a stairwell connected to the dungeon. The servants quarters always connect to the ballroom. The chapel always connects to the alchemy lab..." Thadeus interrupts, "That's it! Thank you Marla, that should help us get a better idea. Message Elias any other room pairings you find." Marla agrees, and Thadeus ends the call.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +2)
The hallway remains calm beneath the red moonlight. Thadeus takes out his phone and calls Marla while Marcus and Elias wait beside the carved arch.

Thadeus Jovanović
Marla, have you had any luck finding a map or layout of Proserpina?

Marla Brewer
No two maps I find are alike, but certain rooms always connect. The study always has a stairwell connected to the dungeon. The servants quarters always connect to the ballroom. The chapel always connects to the alchemy lab.

Thadeus Jovanović
That’s it! Thank you, Marla. That should help us get a better idea. Message Elias any other room pairings you find.

Marla Brewer
I will. I’m sending the confirmed pairings to Elias now, along with the conflicting layouts so he can compare them.
Thadeus ends the call. Elias checks his phone as the new information arrives, then turns toward the hallway, tracing a route from the study to the dungeon and onward toward the chapel.

Elias
We have a working structure now. If the chapel connects to the alchemy lab, that may be our best route to Sally and Elizabeth.
“Thadeus checks Marcus again. "How are you holding up?" Marcus looks exhausted, replying, "I'm a bit better now, thank you both. They struck so fast when you two were gone. Elizabeth tried to protect Sally and I, but was knocked out before we could escape. We have to find them, Thadeus" Thadeus places a hand on Marcus's shoulder, "We will, and we'll get them home safe."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Thadeus Jovanović
How are you holding up?

Marcus Thorne
I’m a bit better now, thank you both. They struck so fast when you two were gone. Elizabeth tried to protect Sally and me, but she was knocked out before we could escape. We have to find them, Thadeus.
Marcus still looks exhausted beneath the red moonlight, but the curse has left his throat clear. Elias watches the hallway while Thadeus places a steady hand on Marcus’s shoulder.

Thadeus Jovanović
We will, and we’ll get them home safe.

Marcus Thorne
He believes that. After everything in this castle, he still believes we can bring them back.

Marcus Thorne
Then I’ll keep moving. Tell me what you need, and I’ll help you reach them.
The reassurance settles Marcus enough for him to stand straight. Elias turns his phone toward the branching hallway, and the three men begin following the confirmed route toward the chapel and alchemy lab.
“As they move down the hallway, they encounter another monster. Another animated piece of armor without a wearer, colored royal purple, is wielding a large spear. It stands in front of them, halting their movement. The armor sees them, currently holding a defensive stance, unmoving. Thadeus and Elias contemplate how to attack, waiting for additional movement.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)
The confirmed route bends beneath another carved arch, where a royal-purple suit of armor stands alone across the hallway. Its visor is empty, and both hands hold a long spear in a guarded stance.
Thadeus stops with Marcus and Elias behind him. Red moonlight glints along the spearhead, while the guardian remains perfectly still, blocking the passage without advancing.

Thadeus Jovanović
It is waiting for our movement.

Elias
No visible joints exposed, no obvious anchor, and that spear gives it reach. We should learn its pattern before committing.
Elias shifts Marcus behind a mahogany pillar but keeps the guardian in view. Thadeus studies the armor’s footing, the spear’s angle, and the distance to either wall.

Marcus Thorne
It has seen us, but it has not attacked. Is that deliberate?

Elias
Probably. Hold position. If it wants us to make the first move, we need to know why.
“Thadeus directs Elias to throw the Holy Cross at the spear armor. Elias launches it towards the armor. In response, the creature twirls its spear with blinding speed, creating a barrier. The cross is deflected off of the spear, and returns to Elias. In response to their attack, the armor knight slowly starts marching towards the three men. Thadeus pulls out Peacebringer, and transforms it back to its morningstar form.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Thadeus Jovanović
Elias, throw the Holy Cross at it.
Elias steps from behind the pillar and launches the Holy Cross down the crimson hallway. The royal-purple armor, a genderless, ageless armored construct with a tall, broad-shouldered build and a closed, featureless helm reacts instantly, its spear beginning a blur.
The knight twirls the weapon with blinding speed, forming a whirling barrier of steel. The Cross strikes the spinning shaft and ricochets sharply back toward Elias.

Elias
It deflected the Cross. Catching it.
Elias catches the returning relic against his chest. The armor lowers its spear and begins marching toward them, each deliberate step ringing beneath the red moonlight.
Thadeus draws Peacebringer from his pocket. Blue light gathers along the fountain pen, unfolding into the chain whip before condensing into its heavy morningstar form.

Marcus Thorne
It is coming straight for us.
“Thadeus leans back, and with as much force as he can muster, throws Peacebringer at the armored knight. The armor twirls the spear again, but Peacebringer slams into it with greater authority. The morningstar shatters the spear at its base and slams into the chest plate of the armored creature, causing it to fall over and release the magic holding it together. The armor lays lifeless on the blood red floor in the hallway.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Thadeus leans back and throws Peacebringer with all his strength. The morningstar streaks across the crimson hallway as the royal-purple armor whirls its spear into a steel barrier.
Peacebringer smashes through the spinning defense with greater authority. Its morningstar head fractures the spear at the base, then drives squarely into the knight’s chest plate.
The armored construct topples backward and crashes onto the blood-red carpet. Blue light floods through its joints as the force holding it together releases.
The armor lies lifeless beneath the red moonlight, its broken spear beside it. Peacebringer tears free from the chest plate and arcs back through the air.
The morningstar contracts into a glowing fountain pen just before landing in Thadeus’s outstretched hand. The hallway falls silent again.

Elias
That was decisive. Whatever animated it is gone.

Marcus Thorne
Then we should keep moving before the castle sends something else to stop us.
“Elias leads Thadeus and Marcus further down the winding hallways, and they locate the castle chapel, which looks impossibly large. Intricate, arched stained glass windows line both the left and right walls of the long nave. Light streams dramatically through the windows on the right, casting sharp, volumetric purple and white beams across the floor. At the far center of the room, a large, ornate golden arch frames a prominent dark blue cross, serving as the central focal point of the chapel. The chapel features structured stone archways along the ceiling and decorative stone borders at the top and bottom of the frame. Metal vertical structures with spiral staircases are visible on both the immediate left and right sides of the foreground.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled -1)

Elias leads Thadeus and Marcus through winding hallways, following Marla’s confirmed room pairings. The castle’s corridors bend impossibly, yet each turn carries them steadily toward the chapel.

Elias
The architecture keeps shifting, but this route matches the pattern Marla found. Stay close, and watch the thresholds.
A final arch opens into an impossibly vast chapel. Intricate stained glass windows line both walls of the long nave, framed by structured stone arches and ornate borders.
Purple and white light streams through the windows on the right in sharp, volumetric beams, spreading across the stone floor and illuminating metal structures with spiral staircases on either side.

Marcus Thorne
This room is larger than the castle should allow. I have never seen it in any family record.
At the far center, a large golden arch frames a prominent dark blue cross. Its polished ornament catches the colored light, making the chapel’s distant focal point glow against the shadows.

Elias
The chapel. Marla was right. If it connects to the alchemy lab, that passage should be somewhere beyond the altar.
“The three men run down the path to the altar, only to see it is a dead end. There are no doors or exits behind the altar. Thadeus sees the outline of where a door would've been, but now appears to not exist. "Marla was right," Thadeus tells Elias and Marcus, "The castle is seems to be shifting so quickly, even the doors are disappearing. We'll have to try to spiral staircases and see where the next door is." As the three are discussing which path to take, they hear a loud growl and then a huge slam behind them. They look back towards the entrance of the chapel to see another monster of the castle. A large, 10 foot tall minotaur is staring at them, a dull gray nose ring between its nostrils. The creature wields an enormous long-handled double axe, small cracks at its still clearly sharp edges.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled +0)

The three men run beneath the colored chapel light toward the altar. Behind it, there are no doors, only a faint rectangular outline where an entrance once existed.

Thadeus Jovanović
Marla was right. The castle is shifting so quickly, even the doors are disappearing. We’ll have to try the spiral staircases and see where the next door is.

Elias
Then we split our attention between both staircases. If the route changes again, we need to notice which one remains connected.
A deep growl rolls through the chapel. A tremendous slam follows behind them, shaking dust from the ornate arches and silencing the men mid-discussion.
At the entrance stands a ten-foot-tall minotaur—an adult male, a broad, powerful beast with dark coarse hide, a dull gray nose ring, and a massive double axe in its hands. Small cracks mark the weapon’s still-sharp edges.

Marcus Thorne
That thing was not in the chapel when we entered. The castle has changed again, and it brought a guardian with it.
The minotaur lowers its long-handled axe and fixes its gaze on the group. Elias shifts toward the nearest spiral staircase, while Marcus stays close as the men prepare to move.
“Thadeus concentrates on Peacebringer, having it change into its chain whip form, with an iron spiked ball at its tip. Elias directs Marcus up the nearest spiral staircase, attempting to flee from the behemoth. The minotaur rushes at Thadeus, swinging its axe wildly downward at his head. Thadeus manages to roll out of the way, as the Minotaur's weapon crashing through one of the large church pews, cleaving it in half.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)
Thadeus concentrates on Peacebringer. The fountain pen unfolds into a glowing chain whip, its iron links lengthening until a heavy spiked ball hangs at the tip.

Elias
Marcus, take the nearest staircase. Keep moving and do not look back.
Elias grips Marcus’s arm and directs him toward the closest spiral staircase. Marcus follows, glancing once toward Thadeus as the minotaur charges.
The adult male minotaur bellows and swings its massive double axe straight down at Thadeus’s head. The blade descends through the colored chapel light.
Thadeus rolls clear across the stone floor. The axe crashes into a large church pew instead, cleaving the wood in half and scattering splinters across the aisle.
Thadeus rises with Peacebringer’s chain whip gathered in his hand, while Elias and Marcus reach the spiral staircase. The minotaur wrenches its axe free and turns toward him.
“Thadeus begins to twirl Peacebringer, ready to strike with it, when the minotaur begins stomping one of its feet, and points its head down. Halfway up the staircase, Elias shouts at Thadeus, "Look out, its about to charge again!" Thadeus pulls Peacebringer back down, seeing the Minotaur's eyes go bright red, as it rushes at him with its head down, and large horns facing Thadeus. Thadeus rolls again out of the way, as the creature run head first into a stone column, its horns locking it within the pillar. Thadeus seizes the opportunity and swings Peacebringer down onto the minotaurs back. The creature cries in pain, but still stands, trying to wriggle itself free from the wall.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Thadeus begins twirling Peacebringer, its glowing chain sweeping through the chapel light. The minotaur stomps one foot, lowers its head, and aims its cracked horns.

Elias
Look out, it’s about to charge again!
Halfway up the spiral staircase, Elias shouts as the minotaur’s eyes flare bright red. Thadeus pulls Peacebringer down and braces for the rush.
The adult male minotaur charges headfirst. Thadeus rolls sharply aside, and the beast’s horns slam into a stone column with a thunderous impact.
The horns lock deep within the pillar. Before the creature can wrench free, Thadeus swings Peacebringer down across its broad back, the spiked ball striking solidly.
The minotaur bellows in pain, legs braced against the chapel floor. Its shoulders heave as it twists and wriggles, still trapped by its horns in the stone.

Marcus Thorne
It’s stuck! Elias, keep moving. Thadeus has an opening!
“Thadeus prepares to swing Peacebringer down again, when the minotaur kicks its hind leg back towards Thadeus, striking him in the gut, and launching him across the chapel into the altar with a thud. Thadeus feels the wind knocked out of him, catching his breath as he tries to stand up, while the Minotaur is still stuck in the pillar. Elias and Marcus are near the top of the staircase, and find there is a door at the top. They look down at Thadeus and the Minotaur, worry growing over Marcus's face”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

The minotaur’s hind leg lashes backward and catches Thadeus in the gut. He flies across the chapel, slamming into the altar as breath leaves him in a harsh, involuntary gasp.
Pain knots beneath his ribs, and the impact leaves a dark bruise spreading across his abdomen. Peacebringer’s chain clatters over the stone beside him.
Thadeus plants one hand against the altar, draws a ragged breath, and forces his legs beneath him. He stands fully, shaken but steady, while the minotaur remains trapped by its horns.

Elias
Thadeus is up. The thing is still stuck, but we found a door at the top.
Elias and Marcus reach the staircase’s upper landing. A narrow wooden door waits beneath the chapel’s vaulted stonework, while colored window light cuts across their anxious faces.

Marcus Thorne
We cannot leave him down there. That creature may break free before he can reach us.
Below them, the minotaur strains against the pillar, cracking stone around its horns. Thadeus steadies Peacebringer’s handle and faces the trapped guardian.
“Elias rolls up his sleeves, and takes out another bottle of holy water. He moves his hands back and forth. Thadeus looks up and sees this, remembering what comes after. After shuffling his hands, Elias throws the holy water above the Minotaur and shouts, "Hydro Storm!" Out of thin air, a strong rain falls through the entire chapel, as if there was no ceiling. The rain isn't ordinary water - it is holy water. When the rain starts falling on the minotaur, the creature cries further in pain, as its hair begins to catch blue embers, until its form is in a blaze of blue flame. The minotaura flesh is devoured, leaving a skeleton, that eventually collapses to th ground into dust. The rain continues briefly for another moment, drenching the three men harmlessly. Thadeus looks up at Elias, "You could've done that before that thing kicked me square in the ribs."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Elias rolls up his sleeves and draws another bottle of holy water. He shuffles his hands back and forth, eyes fixed on the trapped minotaur.
From the altar, Thadeus recognizes the motion and looks up. Elias raises the bottle above the creature as the chapel’s colored light trembles around them.

Elias
Hydro Storm!
Holy rain pours through the chapel as though its ceiling has vanished. It drenches the minotaur, which cries out while blue embers kindle across its coarse hair.
Blue flame engulfs the trapped guardian. Its flesh vanishes beneath the rain, leaving a burning skeleton that collapses beside the cracked pillar and dissolves into dust.
The storm continues briefly, soaking Elias, Marcus, and Thadeus without harm before fading. Water patters across the chapel floor as the last blue sparks disappear.

Thadeus Jovanović
You could've done that before that thing kicked me square in the ribs.
“Marcus removes the Ankh ring from his hand and tosses to Thadeus, who puts it on and immediately feels the pain from his ribs melt away. Thadeus also notices the rings ruby gem begin to so a hairline cracks on it. Thadeus looks at Marcus, who responds with, "Don't look at me, I didn't hit it against anything." Thadeus thinks to himself, "I think the rings ability to heal must be limited. I'll bet when the gem cracks, it'll stop working. We'll have to be even more careful for what may be ahead."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Marcus Thorne
Don't look at me, I didn't hit it against anything.
Marcus removes the ankh ring and tosses it to Thadeus. He catches it, slides it onto his finger, and immediately feels the pain in his ribs melt away.
The ruby’s red glow flickers. A hairline crack appears across its surface, fine as a thread but unmistakable beneath the chapel’s colored light.
Marcus lifts both hands in protest, still wet from Elias’s holy storm. The chapel settles around them, water dripping from the altar and broken pew.

Thadeus Jovanović
I think the ring’s ability to heal must be limited. I’ll bet when the gem cracks, it’ll stop working. We’ll have to be even more careful for what may be ahead.

Elias
Then we treat that ring like a last reserve, not a cure. Whatever waits beyond that door may demand everything we have.
Marcus looks toward the narrow wooden door above the spiral staircase. Elias steadies himself beside him, while Thadeus keeps the cracked ruby in view and the route ahead open.
