The Trail to the Forge
Sivanus
Sivanus

Two weeks of hard road end in the Barrens. Arion Touvengard and Sivanus stand before a crumbling forge ruin, its stones soot-stained and split, the air reeking of old slag and frost.

The trail is still there, faint but sure. It runs from the burst forge door straight into the ruin's throat, as if the smiths wanted to be found only by those who know their work.

Sivanus

Sivanus

This is no dead end. Someone passed through here recently, and they wanted the path remembered.

The binding work matches the blade. The smiths are near.

A low grind echoes from within. Dust sifts from the lintel, and a hidden seam in the wall shivers under old pressure, as if the ruin itself is warning them off.

Sivanus

Sivanus

We go in now, or the Council reaches them first.

From far behind, faint voices carry on the wind, hard and disciplined. Council enforcers are still hunting, and this ruin is the first lead that points directly to the smiths who made Arion's prison.

“I strike the ground and create an energy barrier to slow the following smiths as we enter the cave systd.”

Arion drives the sword’s point into the ash-choked ground. Teal force snaps outward in a low ring, and the chamber mouth ahead shudders under a thin barrier of light.

The first cold gust from the cave system hits the ward and stalls. Dust, frost, and loose slag hang against it like insects in amber.

Behind them, boots crunch over stone. The pursuing enforcers slow at the sight of the flare, their voices cutting off in a tight, wary cluster.

The cost lands at once, the barrier pulls hard on Arion’s host, and a sharp crack splits the old ruin wall beside the seam.

That will buy us moments, not mercy. Move.

Sivanus slips through the gap first, eyes fixed on the dark throat beyond. Arion’s ward holds behind her, a bright door slammed in the hunters’ faces.

Inside the passage, the air turns colder and dry as bone. Ahead, a narrow shelf of stone bears fresh scrape marks, and something pale glints in the dark, half-buried under dust.

“I hold the ward while Sivanus scouts ahead”

Arion keeps the ward humming behind them, and the crackling light steadies just enough for Sivanus to slip farther into the passage. The hunters stay sealed outside, their shapes only brief shadows in the glow.

Inside, the cold deepens. Sivanus crouches at the stone shelf, one hand hovering over the scrape marks as if measuring a trail laid down in haste.

Sivanus

Sivanus

Fresh work. Someone passed here recently, and they did not bother to hide it.

A pale glint answers from the dust, half-swallowed by grit and old slag. The ward behind them flickers, but it holds.

Arion Touvengard

The scrape is recent. The glint is not stone.

Sivanus reaches into the dark and brushes away the dust, exposing the edge of something flat and metal, set into the shelf like a trapped secret.

Sivanus

Sivanus

I have it. Stay on the ward.

“I inspect the metal plate”

Arion turns the plate free at last, and the dust slides away in a thin gray sigh. The metal is old, but the fastening work is fresher than the ruin around it, as if someone came back to cover a hidden seam and failed.

Arion Touvengard

Arion Touvengard

Not a scrap. A cover.

Cold blue sparks spit from the hearth farther down the forge, flashing across the plate’s edge. Etched beneath the grime is a narrow maker’s line, and beside it, a second mark struck through in haste.

The plate gives under Arion’s hand with a dull click. A shallow cavity lies behind it, lined with wrapped strips of oiled cloth and a sealed hide tube, both untouched by the dust outside.

Sivanus

Sivanus

There. That is what they meant to hide.

Sivanus stays back in Arion’s view, tense and half-shadowed by the ward glow, while the hidden cache waits in the open. Behind them, a faint scrape carries from the passage, and Marr’s uneasy breathing is still somewhere near the forge mouth.
