A Caravan and Blackthorn Watch

Mara leads Mando and the three rescued guards up into Blackthorn’s upper yard. The watch platforms overlook the settlement approach, while gate chains and counterweights hang ready above the open entrance.

The guard points from one blackened marker to another. Their carved warning sigils remain intact, but no ember glows within them, leaving the approach strangely unannounced.

A cold vibration travels through the yard stones and climbs the gatehouse walls. Chains tremble softly overhead; dust slips from the watch platform, though no visible hand touches it.

Mara studies Mando, then the silent markers and the gate mechanisms. The rescued guards wait nearby, armed again but exhausted, leaving the next decision in his hands.

Mando crosses to the eastern road marker and kneels beside its blackened stone. He studies the intact warning sigils, the ashless brazier within, and the hairline channels cut into its base.

His inspection finds no break in the warding. The marker’s fire was not extinguished from without; a concealed stone plug has turned inside the base, closing the channel that draws heat from the lower hearth.

Mando follows the carved geometry to a small recessed socket beneath the eastern face. Pressing the correct sigil releases the plug, and a faint ember kindles deep within the marker.

He rotates the socket quarterwise. Warmth travels through the channels, and the black stone begins to glow with a steady red light, restoring the warning mark above the road.

Across the approach, a second sigil answers with a brief amber flare. The gatehouse chains stop trembling, and the settlement road is visible again beneath the returning warning glow.

Mando inspects the remaining warning markers, tracing their intact sigils, sealed hearth channels, and blackened sockets. Each has been deliberately closed from within, matching the eastern marker’s hidden plug.

His examination reveals a clear sequence: eastern, southern, then the postern beacon. The closures are not damage but a controlled warning pattern, and each marker can be restored through its recessed sigil.

Mando finds an additional advantage beneath the postern marker: a narrow service channel linking the warning stones. From this point, the markers can be checked and relit without descending into the foundation.

The inspection leaves the remaining markers understood and their relighting method clear. Beyond the eastern glow, the southern stone waits dark but undamaged, ready for Mando’s measured hand.

Mando follows the service channel from the eastern marker to the southern stone, moving quickly between the blackened sockets. The ground shifts under his boot as he reaches the recessed sigil.

He turns the southern socket through its marked quarter circle. A sharp stone catch snaps against his gauntlet, scraping the metal and skin beneath, but the sealed hearth opens and red light floods the marker.

Mando crosses to the postern beacon, where its socket sits beneath a veil of ashless black. He kneels, follows the linked geometry, and sets the sigil by touch.

The beacon answers with a deep amber flare. Light runs from the southern marker through the service channel, and the postern gatehouse wakes beneath a steady warning glow.

Mando rises with a fresh scrape across his gauntlet and blood bright beneath it. Across Blackthorn, every warning marker now burns, while the sealed foundation remains quiet.
