The gray-haired elder closes the cargo ledger with a firm clap, then spreads a fresh route map across the scarred table. Red ink marks the settlement’s trade approaches and three lonely watch posts.

Gray-Haired Elder

Gray-Haired Elder

Your accounting is sound, and your judgment has been witnessed. I offer you responsibility as an independent examiner and protector of our trade approaches.

He taps the northern road, where the map’s red line disappears into thorn country. Liora stands at Mando’s shoulder, while Tomas keeps the seal rubbings gathered beneath one hand.

Settlement Warden Man

The watch at Blackthorn Post stopped reporting two nights ago. No smoke, no bell, no rider returned. We have not sent another patrol.

Liora Venn

You would be free to investigate as you judge necessary, Mando, but the offer carries the settlement’s trust as well as its danger.

Settlement Warden Woman

The post guards the only reliable road toward the western markets. If it has fallen silent, merchants will soon choose another road, and our trade will suffer.

The narrow-faced merchant studies the map without touching it. The elder leaves one finger resting beside Blackthorn Post, and the Trade Hall waits for Mando’s answer.

I accept the post and its responsibilities. I will prepare to leave for Blackthorn Post.

Mando’s acceptance is firm, but the elder hears the battlefield still beneath it. He records Mando as an examiner first, withholding the full authority of a settlement protector.

Gray-Haired Elder

Gray-Haired Elder

The appointment stands, but provisionally. Bring us facts from Blackthorn before you bear our authority beyond these walls.

The tallest warden supplies a travel cloak, a sealed inspection writ, and a small packet of provisions. Liora quietly adds her house’s trade mark to the writ.

Settlement Warden Woman

Take the old charcoal-burners’ track from the northern fork. It avoids the thorn road and reaches Blackthorn’s rear slope, though the marker stones are easy to miss.

Tomas folds the marked route into the seal rubbings, while Liora watches Mando gather his armor and equipment. The assignment has narrowed, but the hidden track offers a practical first step.

Blackthorn Post crouches on a rocky shelf above the northern road, its watchtower blackened by old smoke. The gate hangs open, and no bell answers Mando’s arrival.

A young adult woman with a lean build stands beneath the gatehouse, wearing a torn green cloak over patched mail. Mud streaks her pale face, and one eye is swollen nearly shut.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Stop there. If you carry the elder’s writ, show it quickly. Something beneath this post has learned the sound of footsteps.

She recognizes the sealed writ and lowers her short sword. Behind her, the yard lies deserted, with abandoned packs arranged in a careful circle around a dry well.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Mara Pell. I was the last watch officer still breathing when the others vanished. Their voices began calling from that well afterward.

A faint blue glimmer pulses below the well’s stone rim, answering the sealed writ with a whisper of cold air. The post’s barred inner door bears fresh scratches from the inside.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

If you truly came to examine Blackthorn, examiner, begin there. I will stand behind you, but I will not answer any voice that uses my name.

Protect Blackthorn Post from the thing beneath it

Mando advances to the well with his weight balanced and his weapon held ready, keeping the rim between himself and whatever waits below. Mara watches from beneath the gatehouse, sword lowered but prepared.

He studies the blue glimmer, the abandoned packs, and the dust around the stones. The light pulses once in answer, then rises as a cold reflection across the inner rim.

The reflection breaks his view before he can judge the well’s depth. Stone grinds beneath his guarded stance, and a section of the rim settles inward with a sharp crack.

Mando Shunkar

The light is not rising from the bottom.

The failed examination leaves the well’s center obscured, but exposes a narrow black opening beneath the displaced stones. Cold air flows through it toward the barred inner door.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

There. That was not open before. If the undercroft connects to the inner door, it may show where the others went without answering the well.

Mara shifts beside the gatehouse, keeping clear of the opening. The new passage offers a way around the well’s voice, while the blue light continues pulsing behind the fallen stone.

“I investigate the door”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +3)

Mara Pell
Mara Pell

Mando leaves the well’s cold breath behind and examines the barred inner door. Scratches cluster around the latch, but beneath the dust he finds newer tool marks and a thin line of blue light.

His inspection reveals the bar is a decoy. A recessed stone beside the hinge bears the same silver geometry as the sealed writ, and its center yields beneath his armored thumb.

The inner door unlocks without a groan and swings inward, revealing a stair descending beneath Blackthorn. Blue light marks dry steps, while watch cloaks, spears, and bedrolls lie neatly abandoned below.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

You found the true latch. The others left their weapons behind, but not in panic. They went down willingly, or something made them believe they were safe.

At the threshold, Mando spots a chalked route on the lowest visible wall: a simple mark pointing toward a side passage and away from the well’s shaft.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

That passage was not on the post plans. If it leads beneath the tower, we can search without giving the well another answer.

The open doorway gives Mando a defensible route below and a clear retreat to the yard. Mara steps beside it, watching the darkness while the blue glow steadies.

“Taking advantage of the defensible route, Mando becons Mara to follow as he continues his investigation”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Mando gives Mara a curt beckoning gesture, then enters the stairway with his halberd angled across the passage. She follows at once, keeping close to the wall.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

I will follow your judgment, examiner. If the voices begin again, I will warn you before they use my name.

The blue marks brighten beneath their feet, revealing dust disturbed by many recent passages. None of the tracks return toward the stair, and several end beside the side passage.

At the passage mouth, Mando finds shallow grooves cut into the floor, each aligned with a concealed stone panel. The marks form a deliberate route toward the tower’s foundation.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Those grooves were not here when I searched the lower rooms. Someone has been moving the panels from below.

Mando advances with Mara behind him. The first panel opens under careful pressure, exposing a narrow chamber where the missing watch’s brass badges lie stacked around a cold, blue-lit doorway.

Mara Pell

Mando crouches beside the blue-lit doorway, examining its pale stone, the hinges, and the brass badges stacked around the threshold. The light comes from etched channels, not flame.

Each badge bears a watch insignia and a tiny notch matching the doorway’s silver geometry. Their arrangement is deliberate: together they form a ward, not a memorial or discarded equipment.

The doorway’s blue radiance reveals faint lettering along its lintel. It records a binding oath: voices may pass outward, but the thing beneath the tower cannot cross while the badges remain gathered.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Then the badges are keeping it contained. The watch did not abandon them. They left them here so the seal would hold.

Mando finds a recessed handhold beneath the lowest badge. Its mechanism is intact, and the inspection reveals a narrow inner passage beyond the doorway, descending toward a chamber marked with the same oath.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

There is a way in, then. But if we move even one badge, we may loosen whatever keeps the voices below us.

The inspection gives Mando a safer advantage: the doorway can be opened from this side without disturbing the ward, and its inner threshold offers defensible ground for the search.

Mando fits his fingers beneath the recessed handhold and applies measured pressure, keeping his armored shoulder clear of the badge-ward. The mechanism resists, then gives unevenly.

A hidden catch snaps. The inner passage opens a handspan, but the lowest brass badge shifts against the stone with a sharp chime. Blue light surges through every etched channel.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Stop. The ward is tightening around the opening. Do not force it farther.

The passage seals again before the badge can slide free, leaving the ward intact but the intended entrance barred. Cold air now leaks from a hairline seam beneath the threshold.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

You did not break the seal. But the catch exposed another way in, below the lintel. It may be opened from the chamber side.

Mara kneels beside the seam without touching it. Beneath the blue radiance, a narrow groove descends along the wall and disappears toward the tower’s foundation, marked by the same oath-sign.

“Are the missing watch still alive below?”

YES (Likely, rolled 43)

Mara Pell

The groove beneath the threshold carries more than cold air. From somewhere below comes the muffled scrape of feet, followed by several uneven breaths in the dark.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Those are people. I know the rhythm of their watch boots, and I heard no such movement from the empty rooms above.

A voice rises through the seam, hoarse but unmistakably human. Another answers it, then a third, their words blurred by stone and distance.

Missing Watch

Mara? Is someone there? The blue door still holds. We are alive, but we cannot reach the badges.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

I hear you. Stay where you are. The examiner found the ward, and we will find a way to open it without breaking the seal.

Relief crosses Mara’s battered face, quickly disciplined into focus. Beneath the threshold, the trapped watch shifts closer, and the blue channels answer with a steadier glow.

Missing Watch

Then hurry. Something in the lower chamber has begun speaking with our voices.

Mando braces one hand beneath the threshold and works the blue door’s hidden catch by touch, easing pressure away from the clustered badges. The stone yields a finger’s width.

Then the door twists against him. A silver line flares across the lintel, and the lowest badge lifts half an inch before settling back with a warning chime. The opening slams shut, but no badge falls.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

The seal rejected the angle. Do not try that motion again. You nearly opened the ward instead of the door.

The failed attempt changes the threshold. A narrow crack appears beneath the stone sill, breathing warmer air now, and pale writing becomes visible along its inner edge.

Missing Watch

We can see the light beneath us. There is a service crawlway here, but its inner grate is jammed from your side.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

That is our way in. The door stays sealed, the badges stay gathered, and the crawlway may let us reach them from below.

Mara points to the newly exposed groove, where a recessed iron ring waits beneath the sill. The trapped guards’ voices grow clearer through the stone, while the blue ward steadies.

“Mara and I take the crawlway”

Mando hooks his fingers through the recessed ring and hauls upward. Rusted iron gives with a shriek, scraping his armored shoulder hard enough to bruise beneath the plate, but the grate rises.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

Hold it there. I am going in first, and I will mark the footing for you.

Mara slips through the opening, then Mando follows sideways beneath the low stonework. Warm air presses around them, carrying dust, sweat, and the faint mineral glow of the ward.

The crawlway opens into a cramped chamber beneath the sealed door. Mando plants himself beside the inner grate, while Mara crouches beyond him and raises her lamp toward the trapped guards.

Missing Watch

You reached the inner side. The grate is wedged, but its release bar is here. Keep the badges undisturbed above us.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

We have reached you without touching the ward. Show us the release, and we will bring you out.

Mara finds the bar by touch and guides Mando’s hand to its thick iron grip. Behind the grate, three watch guards, two adult men and an adult woman with lean builds, dusty faces, short brown or black hair, and muted green uniforms gather in the blue-lit chamber, alive and waiting.

Mara guides Mando’s hand around the borrowed release bar. He braces against the stone and hauls, his bruised shoulder flaring beneath the armor as the iron latch breaks free.

The inner grate rises with a grinding shriek. Mando’s shoulder takes the strain, and the bar gouges his gauntlet, but the passage opens wide enough for the trapped watch to climb through.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

One at a time. Keep your heads down and leave the badges untouched.

The first watch guard crawls through, followed by the second and the adult woman. Dust coats their muted green uniforms, but all three stand alive beneath Mara’s lamp.

Missing Watch

We are clear of the chamber. The ward still holds.

Mando lowers the grate once the guards are beyond it, releasing the bar only after the iron settles. His shoulder aches sharply, and the gauntlet bears a fresh scrape, but the seal remains undisturbed.

Mara Pell

Mara Pell

You bought them a way out without breaking the ward. Blackthorn owes you more than an inspection report.

The rescued guards gather in the cramped chamber, breathing hard while blue light steadies along the sealed doorway. Beyond it, something begins speaking again in a familiar voice.
