Mando follows the wagon tracks from the ravine until they end beside a dry streambed. The caravan has halted beneath thorn trees, preparing a hurried evening camp.

Liora kneels beside the merchant child, checking dusty knees and offering water. Her russet cloak is travel-stained, but her relief at seeing Mando is unmistakable.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

I knew there was something different about you. Never seen bandits just back down like that, much less from one man. Your the best hire I've ever made. However the trek is not over yet

The merchant son spreads a marked trade map across a crate, pinning its corners with stones. His finger rests between the road ahead and a fortified settlement marked in red.

Tomas

Tomas

We should divert now. The settlement has walls, guards, and wells. The destination can wait until the roads are watched again.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

And lose another day, another contract, perhaps the whole season? We cannot hide every time danger shows a face.

The child clutches Liora’s sleeve as the argument sharpens. Around them, guards loosen harnesses and light a small cooking fire, while both adults turn toward Mando, awaiting his presence in the decision.

Though the camp prepares for evening, the sun hangs high above the thorn trees, its white light glaring off armor and wagon fittings. Long shadows have not yet reached the dry streambed.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Then we have more road than I feared. The light will carry us well past the worst of this country before nightfall.

Liora rises and studies the open sky. The child shades their eyes beneath one hand, while the merchant son keeps his finger pressed to the red-marked settlement on the map.

Tomas

Tomas

No sunset yet, but the road ahead still narrows between the hills. Walls remain the safer choice, Mother.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Safer, perhaps. But daylight gives us a chance to reach the next milestone before choosing.

The argument loses its urgency beneath the steady sun. Harnesses are tightened again, cooking gear stowed, and the halted caravan gathers itself for the road while the hills remain clearly visible ahead.

“Shunkar agrees that it is best to use most of the rest of day light to push forward. He helps pack, and remains vigilant until the caravan stops for the night.”

YES (Likely, rolled 41)

Mando gives the road his judgment through action, helping cinch the harnesses and stow the cooking gear. The caravan turns toward the narrowing hills before the sun can lose its strength.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Then we move. Tomas, mark the milestone when we pass it. If the road remains clear, we reach the hills before dusk.

The guards fall into marching positions, two ahead and one ranging behind. Mando remains near the lead wagon, halberd in hand, his gaze sweeping thorn, ridge, and every strip of shadow.

Tomas

Tomas

The trail is empty so far. I still dislike those hills, but I cannot deny the daylight favors us.

Wheels grind over hard earth as the caravan presses onward. Once, a hawk bursts from the scrub and sends every hand toward a weapon, but no ambush follows.

Near sunset, the road widens beside a broken stone marker. Liora orders the wagons into a defensible crescent, and the guards begin unloading bedrolls beneath the first darkening stars.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

We stop here for the night. You bought us this ground, Mando. The caravan is safe because you kept watch.

“Everyone sits down for dinner. The young member of the merchant family, fueled by curiosity over the display of dominance over the bandits, asks Mando how he intimidated all those scary people. Mando laughs and says that even if they are simple bandits warriors know each other and have a sense of each other.”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 10)

The Roadside Decision

The caravan settles around the cooking fire, with Liora and Tomas sharing the first meal while the child sits nearest Mando. The guards listen over steaming bowls.

Merchant Child

Merchant Child

How did you frighten all those scary people without even striking them?

Mando laughs, a deep sound rolling through the darkening camp. Firelight catches on his armor as he rests both hands across the halberd’s haft.

Mando Shunkar

Mando Shunkar

Even simple bandits are warriors in their own fashion. Warriors know each other, and we have a sense for what stands before us.

The child absorbs this with wide eyes. Across the fire, Tomas lowers his spoon, while the guards exchange glances that carry less doubt and more allegiance.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Then they recognized the cost of testing you. I suspect our own guards will sleep better with you beside the wagons.

The guards quietly shift their bedrolls closer to the lead wagon, leaving Mando the clearest view of every approach. The camp’s defenses improve without another order.

“Shunkar joins the normal night guard rotation and volunteers for the toughest rotation.”

When the first watch is called, Mando takes his place among the caravan guards instead of claiming a separate bedroll. He gestures toward the darkest, longest stretch of road beyond the wagons.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

You have already carried the hardest part of this journey. Still, if that is the watch you choose, I will not deny it.

The guard at the fire surrenders his place without protest. The guard by the lead wagon points out the exposed approach, while the rear guard explains the rotation and its signals.

Caravan Guard 3

Caravan Guard 3

The last watch is the worst. Coldest hour, blackest hills, and anything stalking us will wait for then.

Tomas

Tomas

He knows. That is exactly why he is taking it.

Mando settles beneath the first stars, halberd planted within reach, and accepts the final rotation. The guards arrange their watches around his, their confidence hardening into a quiet discipline.

Nothing scary will come past him.

The hours pass without disturbance. Wind combs the thorn branches, embers settle into ash, and the road beyond the wagons remains empty beneath the hard stars.

Caravan Guard 3

Caravan Guard 3

Nothing on the eastern approach. Not a beast, bandit, or prowler.

The other watches report the same. No shadow crosses the firelight, no hoof scuffs the earth, and no distant cry troubles the sleeping caravan.

Merchant Child

Merchant Child

He really did make the night behave.

Tomas checks the road at every signal, then lowers his hand from his sword. Liora remains awake beside the lead wagon, listening until certainty replaces suspicion.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

The night has tested the camp and found no courage worth sending against you.

Before dawn, the final watch changes without alarm. Mando’s chosen stretch of road has known no approach at all, and the caravan wakes intact behind him.

“Mando helps pack up for the next leg of the journey. Along the next stretch the youngest member of the family askes Shunkar if he has any stories about being a warrior. Shunkar happily shares, though humbly, of one of his most exciting war stories from the front lines - edited for age appropriateness of course.”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Mando helps fold bedrolls, lash cooking gear, and secure the last water skins. The caravan guards follow his efficient example, though packing takes longer while he pauses to reconstruct the order of his war story.

Once the wagons roll, the merchant child walks beside the lead wagon, glancing up at Mando’s armored height and halberd.

Merchant Child

Merchant Child

Shunkar, do you have any stories about being a warrior? A real one from the war?

Mando Shunkar

Mando Shunkar

I have one. At the front, our line broke beside a burning supply cart, and I crossed the gap alone to recover our fallen banner. The enemy expected panic; instead, I planted it on the ridge and held it until my soldiers regrouped.

He leaves out the bloodier details and speaks of mud, courage, and disciplined feet finding their places again. The child listens so intently that even the wagon’s creak seems quieter.

Merchant Child

Merchant Child

You did all that by yourself? Were you scared?

Mando answers with patient humility, giving credit to the soldiers who returned when they saw the banner. By then the sun has climbed high, and Tomas marks the delayed departure on his map while Liora smiles at the child’s wonder.

“Is there an encounter along the next leg of the caravan's journey”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 53)

Fire-Lizard

The caravan enters the narrowing hills beneath cliffs of red stone. A long, ash-scaled lizard bursts from a fissure beside the lead wagon, scattering stones and shrieking sparks.

Tomas

Tomas

A fire-lizard! Keep it from the teams!

The beast snaps at the lead wagon's traces, but Mando's halberd and armored advance drive it back toward the fissure. The horses rear, and one wheel slams against a buried stone.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

The road is ours, but the wheel is cracked! We cannot leave the wagon behind.

The lizard retreats into shadow, beaten from the road but not slain. The caravan reaches the next bend intact, while the lead wagon's damaged wheel groans with every turn.

Tomas

Tomas

We can mend it at the milestone, if the axle holds that far. Move slowly, and keep the guards watching those cracks.

The wagons continue through the hills under a tightened guard. The road ahead remains open, but the caravan loses its easy pace, each turn threatening to finish what the beast began.

“Does the caravan face another fire lizard attack”

Fire-Lizard

The fire-lizard erupts from the fissure again, followed by two smaller fire-lizards, juvenile, lean-bodied creatures with narrow reptilian faces, ember-red scales, short legs, and whip-thin tails. Sparks rake the traces as the beasts surge toward the lead wagon, while the horses rear against their harnesses.

Tomas

Tomas

Again! Hold the teams steady, and keep those things from the wheel!

Mando advances between the beasts and the wagon, halberd sweeping a hard boundary across the road. The fire-lizard recoils, but the smaller creatures dart around him toward the exposed axle.

A shower of sparks strikes the cliff above. Red stone crashes down behind the caravan, sealing the fissure and forcing the fire-lizards into a narrow side passage.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

The road behind us is closed. Mando, the side passage may be our only way through!

The beasts vanish into the passage rather than press past Mando. Beyond the fallen stone, the collapse reveals an ancient paved track descending between the cliffs, broad enough for the wagons.

Tomas

Tomas

That track leads around the broken road. It may carry us past the hills without losing the wagon.

The guards turn the teams toward the newly exposed way. Behind them, the fire-lizard’s shriek echoes once, then fades beneath the grinding wheels and the caravan’s renewed advance.

“Does the ancient hidden path hold unique treasures?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 2)

The ancient track descends into a buried gatehouse, its cracked arch marked with silver runes. Beyond it, torchless crystal veins illuminate sealed alcoves stacked with bronze ingots, old weapons, and blue glass vessels.

Tomas

Tomas

By every road-marker in the realm, this is no mere detour. That is a treasury, hidden beneath the hills.

The caravan rolls beneath the arch. As the lead wagon crosses the threshold, the runes flare and a stone barrier rises behind them, sealing the pursuing fire-lizards outside without trapping the wagons.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Treasures enough to redeem a ruined season, and a refuge no beast can follow. Mando, you have carried us into fortune.

A central vault stands open, its bronze doors already unlatched. Inside rests a dry well, a store of sealed grain, and a carved map showing a safe road beyond the hills.

Tomas

Tomas

The map bypasses the broken road entirely. We can repair the wheel here, rest the teams, and reach the settlement by a safer route.

Behind the wagons, the sealed gate shudders beneath distant claws, but holds. Ahead, the hidden road gleams toward open country while the caravan gathers around its unexpected wealth.

“While the wheel is repaired, Mando helps search the premises and inventory the treasures that are found with Liora.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

The Roadside Decision

Liora Venn

While Tomas directs the wheel repair, Mando and Liora search the gatehouse together. Crystal light reveals orderly alcoves, dustless shelves, and ancient seals untouched since the treasury was abandoned.

Mando inventories bronze ingots by stack, separates weapons from ceremonial pieces, and finds blue glass vessels marked with the same silver runes as the gate.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

Keep the ingots sealed for now. If these marks name a kingdom, its claim may matter more than their weight.

Together they uncover a bronze chest of stamped trade bars, preserved grain tablets, and a ring of black keys. Mando finds no trap, but several seals remain unreadable.

Liora Venn

Liora Venn

You have given me an inventory worth guarding, Mando. We will take only what the wagons can carry and leave the rest undisturbed.

The search consumes the repair time, and the uncertain seals demand a later scholar’s eye. Still, Liora records every confirmed find, while the caravan gains a safe road and enough provisions for the hills beyond.
