Dawn reaches the eastern fields as Artania and Al emerge from the irrigation ring. Behind them, the mountain route remains stable, its silver channels pulsing in measured silence.
Hessa Vale waits beside the old stones with a covered basket. Sheep cautiously graze nearby, while fresh hooked markings glimmer along the damp channels.

Hessa Vale
You made it back. Come, eat something before the road takes more from you. I kept bread, cheese, and yesterday’s stew warm.
Al sniffs toward the basket, then turns his attention to the sheep. They keep their distance from the ring, though several have ventured onto the pasture again.

Hessa Vale
The flock returned before sunrise, careful as cats. But these marks appeared afterward, shining along the channels where there was only dry stone before.

Hessa Vale
Two strangers inspected this pasture three nights ago, just before the lights began. A tall figure in a gray mantle and a shorter one carrying a brass-bound case.

Hessa Vale
They asked about the old irrigation stones, measured the channels with cords, and argued about whether the mountain gate had awakened. Did you find what they were seeking?
“At the end of the tunnel was a large mark, also hooked. I stabilized it for now. I do not know how much farther the tunnel goes. But there was an indication of converging paths as well as an opening at the other end, heading east.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

Artania Nero Thornson
At the tunnel’s end, I found a large hooked mark. I stabilized it for now, but I do not know how much farther the tunnel goes.

Artania Nero Thornson
The paths converged there, and an opening led east beyond the mountain route. The mark and the channels were part of the same way-magic.
Hessa listens without interrupting. Behind her, the hooked markings along the irrigation channels brighten in sequence, carrying a faint silver pulse toward the distant hills.

Hessa Vale
Then the old stones were not merely carrying water. They were guiding something beneath the earth, and your mark has stirred the route.
Al turns toward the eastern fields, ears raised. The sheep remain calm, but the covered basket’s steam thins as morning wind moves across the pasture.

Hessa Vale
I am grateful you stabilized it, Artania. Whatever lies east, it is better approached with food in you and daylight around you.

“First things first. I walk over to the stones. Placing my hands on them I begin to concentrate. I am going to halt the way-magic heading to the field. I will cut it off at the tunnel entrance. Hopefully this way the sheep will be able to graze once more.”
FAILURE (Legendary Magic, rolled -4)

Artania walks to the nearest irrigation stone and places both hands against its damp surface. Beneath his palms, ancient channels thrum with measured silver power.
He gathers blue-white magic and presses it toward the tunnel entrance, seeking to sever the current before it reaches the field. The hooked markings flare in response.
The flow halts for one breath, then recoils through the buried lattice. Silver light floods the ring’s outer channels, tracing a bright boundary around the pasture instead of leaving the stones.
The loose earth above the tunnel entrance settles into a hard, glassy seal. The way-magic no longer reaches the field, but its redirected current now circles the irrigation stones in a stronger pulse.

Hessa Vale
The sheep are moving away from the ring again, but they are not panicking. You stopped the current from crossing into the pasture, at least.
The flock gathers near the western fence, watching the luminous boundary. The grass beyond it remains dark and ordinary, while the stones continue shining too brightly to approach.

Hessa Vale
It is safer for them than before, but the old stones are holding more magic now. We should keep the animals clear until that glow settles.
“First things first. I walk over to the stones. Placing my hands on them I begin to concentrate. I am going to halt the way-magic heading to the field. I will cut it off at the tunnel entrance. Hopefully this way the sheep will be able to graze once more.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Artania withdraws his hands as the final silver current seals beneath the earth. The glassy entrance holds, and no way-magic reaches the pasture beyond the stones.
For several breaths, the luminous boundary circles the ring without spreading. Then its brightness softens, leaving the channels faintly lit beneath the morning sun.

Hessa Vale
There. The flock is testing the grass again. You have given them back their pasture, though I will keep them away from the stones for now.
Hessa lowers the basket and watches as the nearest sheep step cautiously beyond the boundary. They graze, tense but unharmed, while Al surveys the sealed earth.

Hessa Vale
Eat before you try anything else. The stones are quiet enough, and the tunnel cannot call into my fields anymore.

Artania Nero Thornson
The current is cut off at the tunnel entrance, but the stones still hold its redirected power.
Al settles beside Artania, ears raised toward the hills. Behind them, the irrigation ring keeps its contained silver pulse, stable beneath the watchful dawn.

“My stomach rumbles loudly. I frown, embarrassed. I think Al and I will take you up on that offer of food now.”
Artania’s stomach rumbles loudly across the quiet pasture. He frowns, embarrassed, while Al lifts his head and turns hopefully toward Hessa’s covered basket.

Artania Nero Thornson
Al and I should take Hessa up on her offer of food now.
Hessa’s expression softens with understanding. She uncovers the basket, revealing warm bread, cheese, and a crock of yesterday’s stew beneath a folded cloth.

Hessa Vale
There is no shame in being hungry after work like that. Sit by the stones’ edge, and I will serve you both.
Hessa ladles stew into a wooden bowl for Artania and sets bread and cheese beside it. She fills a second bowl with clean water for Al.

Hessa Vale
Eat slowly, lad. The morning is young, and the pasture will remain safe while you regain your strength.
Al drinks first, then accepts his portion with a pleased rumble. Steam rises from Artania’s stew as the contained silver pulse fades quietly beneath the irrigation stones.

“You, and my guild mates are all so kind. It makes me want to reminisce. Would you like to hear a about my child hood a little, it will be a good way to pass the time?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Artania Nero Thornson
You and my guild mates are all so kind. It makes me want to reminisce. Would you like to hear a little about my childhood? It would pass the time.
Hessa settles beside the basket and folds her hands around her cup. The irrigation stones give a quiet silver pulse, while Al rests contentedly near Artania’s knee.

Hessa Vale
I would like that very much. A person’s childhood tells you what roads shaped them, and we have enough breakfast for every memory you care to share.

Hessa Vale
Tell me about your home, lad. Was it a village like these fields, or did you grow up somewhere with busier streets and taller walls?
She passes Artania another piece of warm bread, then glances toward the calm flock. The morning remains peaceful, giving her question room to linger.

Hessa Vale
He carries himself like someone raised far from the Capital. I hope the city has treated him as kindly as this pasture has.
Al thumps his tail once against the grass, listening to the familiar warmth in the conversation as Hessa waits attentively for Artania’s story.
“All right, the corner of my mouth turns up slowly. I do not have many memories from when I was very young but I remember as far back as 8. I lived in a small farming town on the borders of this kingdom, and where it intersects with the kingdoms to the south, and west.i did not have parents of my own but was raised by an elder couple by the name Thornson. They were called Tanya, and Art. I’ll give you three guesses where my first and last names come from, but I’ll bet you get it on the first.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

Artania Nero Thornson
I remember as far back as eight. I grew up in a small farming town on this kingdom’s borders, where the southern and western kingdoms meet.
Artania’s mouth turns up slowly as he speaks. The contained silver pulse hums beneath the stones, while Hessa listens over her cup and Al rests quietly nearby.

Artania Nero Thornson
I had no parents of my own. An elder couple named Thornson raised me: Tanya and Art. I will give you three guesses where my first and last names came from, though I wager you will guess on the first.

Hessa Vale
Tanya gave you Artania, and Art gave you Thornson. That is not three guesses at all, lad. It is the answer wearing a little finery.
Hessa smiles into her cup, then sets it beside the basket. Beyond her, the flock grazes more freely, and morning light catches the silver lines in the irrigation stones.

Hessa Vale
They must have been good people to give you both a home and their names. What was that farming town like when you were eight?

“Very run of the mill as far as farming towns go, or so I am told. The one thing that stood out the most was that every couple of weeks a caravan would roll through town. It was on one of these caravans that of all things an elf came to town.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Artania Nero Thornson
The town was ordinary for a farming place, or so I am told. Every few weeks, a caravan rolled through, and one brought an elf.
Artania describes the familiar fields, low cottages, and wagon ruts worn into the road. As he mentions the caravan, the irrigation stones answer with a sharper silver pulse.

Hessa Vale
An elf? That would stand out here. We see merchants and drovers, but folk from Meridian rarely come this far toward the borders.
The sudden pulse makes Al lift his head. Hessa glances toward the glowing channels, then back to Artania, her attention sharpened by the coincidence.

Artania Nero Thornson
The elf’s arrival was the one thing I remember clearly. The caravan stopped in the square, and everyone came out to see.

Hessa Vale
Then that visitor must have left an impression. What did the elf look like, and what did they do while the caravan stayed?
The last of the stew cools in Artania’s bowl while the contained magic continues humming beneath the stones. Hessa waits quietly, now watching both his recollection and the ring.
“Well naturally, being so young I became very excited. I jerked from the grasp of the Thornsons, ran right to elf and said hello. Later I learned the elf’s name was something that translates to night. She was of the darker complexion, making her a type of dark elf I assume. She had a very elegant face of sharp lines, long ears of course, and very penetrating dark eyes. She seemed to enjoy reading beneath the largest tree in the town.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

Artania Nero Thornson
I was very young and became excited. I slipped from the Thornsons’ grasp, ran to the elf, and said hello.
The memory sharpens around the town square. The elf is a young adult woman with dark brown skin, an elegant angular face, long ears, and penetrating dark eyes., dressed in a deep violet traveling robe with a narrow silhouette

Artania Nero Thornson
I later learned her name translated to night. I assumed she was a dark elf. She spent much of the visit reading beneath the largest tree.
As Artania describes the tree, the irrigation stones answer with three measured pulses. Silver light gathers briefly along the channels, then settles beneath the morning sun.

Hessa Vale
You ran straight to her? Then she must have been patient, especially if she welcomed a curious border-town child interrupting her book.
Al raises his head toward the eastern hills. For an instant, the contained magic reflects the shape of a broad tree canopy across the damp stones.

Hessa Vale
Do you remember what she was reading, lad? Or whether she said anything when the stones began answering your memory?
“I did not ask or remember her book. However she did something I am told most elves do not do, she touched me. I heard elves to not touch others even of their own kind unless explicitly invited, or being a close friend. She placed a hand to the top of my head and ruffled my hair. Then a startled look came across her face, and she looked closely at me, saying in the common tongue that I have magic.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -2)

Artania Nero Thornson
I did not ask what she was reading. What stayed with me was that she touched me, which elves are said not to do without invitation or close friendship.

Artania Nero Thornson
She placed a hand on top of my head and ruffled my hair. Then she looked startled, studied me closely, and said in the common tongue that I had magic.
As Artania recounts the touch, the brass mark beneath its ward-cloth grows suddenly hot. One blue stitch blackens and loosens, while the irrigation stones answer with a sharp silver pulse.

Hessa Vale
She touched your head? Then she was either remarkably familiar, remarkably careless, or saw something in you worth breaking custom for.
The pulse startles the nearest sheep, and Hessa rises to guide them farther from the ring. Al stands, watching the bright channels without growling.

Hessa Vale
And she recognized magic in you before you knew how to name it. Did she say what kind, or only that it was there?

Hessa Vale
That visitor may have noticed the same hidden current now waking beneath these stones.
“Did her touch awaken magic in me? I cannot be certain. But she told me that it is a powerful gift, calling me especially gifted. She said I can do any type of magic, a very rare gift indeed. She then laughed and called me blessed. Which in turn caused me to laugh greatly as well. I stand up and hold the mark out heading back towards the tunnel to find the other end of the tunnel. Thanking Hessa for her time.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Artania Nero Thornson
I cannot be certain her touch awakened it, but she called me powerful, blessed, and able to wield any magic. Thank you for your time, Hessa.
Artania rises and holds the Brass Farm Token toward the sealed tunnel. Its hooked mark answers with a steady pull beneath the eastern hills, while the irrigation stones dim behind him.

Hessa Vale
Then go carefully, lad. Whatever she saw in you, that old road clearly remembers it too. I will keep the flock away from these stones.
Artania follows the token’s guidance along a buried channel. The ward-cloth gives a dry snap, its final blue stitch burning away as the mark’s heat reddens his palm.
The sealed entrance opens without resistance, revealing the tunnel’s far end beneath a wooded eastern rise. Daylight spills across ancient steps and a weathered boundary stone.
Beyond the steps, the conduit emerges beside a narrow ravine. Silver water threads vanish beneath the roots, carrying the mountain route onward toward distant peaks.

Hessa Vale
You found the other end, then. Keep that burned hand wrapped, Artania, and do not let wonder make you forget caution.
“I travel down the tunnel calling my magic I cast the hot bronze mark into the air, and tether it to me using telekinetic magic. Al and myself travel back down the way we came, looking for the distant Eastern exit.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)
Artania raises the Brass Farm Token above the ravine. Heat ripples from its hooked mark as blue-white magic lifts it free, suspending the bronze sigil in the air.
A telekinetic thread coils around the token and anchors to Artania’s hand, keeping it close without touching his burned palm. The mark steadies, tethered to him.

Hessa Vale
Keep that hand wrapped, lad. I will watch the flock and tell the guild what happened if you are gone long.
Artania and Al descend the ancient steps together. The token floats ahead like a small bronze star, tugging eastward through the tunnel while silver water slips beneath their boots.
They pass the cistern chamber and the black gate, now quiet beneath the stabilized current. Al follows the tether’s direction, nose low, while hooked sigils brighten in sequence.
The eastern conduit opens into a broad vaulted passage. Far ahead, daylight spills through a root-framed arch, revealing the distant Eastern exit beyond the mountain route.
The mark is tethered, and the eastern exit is open.
