The mark’s cold crescent tugs eastward. Between two ancient irrigation stones, damp earth folds aside, revealing a narrow stair descending beneath the ring.

The glimmering channels drain down the steps in thin silver threads. Hessa remains at the ring’s edge, gripping her basket while Al stays close beside Artania.

That stair was never there before. Follow it if you must, but I will keep watch here until you return.

Artania follows the mark’s pull into the passage. Along the walls, old hooked sigils emerge beneath the water, each pointing east toward the sealed mountain route.

The brass mark awakens in its ward-cloth, casting a muted blue glow. Far behind, the silver lights answer together, and buried stones shift with a deep, patient murmur.

Ahead, the way begins opening through the earth, revealing a descending corridor and a faint warmth beyond it. Somewhere in the dark, an unseen lock releases.

Investigate the sealed mountain passage

“Alright time to try something new. Al wait here with me for a second. I focus my magic into my eyes while keeping them closed. I try to imagine how nighttime animals eyes look, and how their vision works in the dark. I open my eyes back up to see if I successfully gave myself dark-vision.”

Artania pauses beside Al, keeping the wolf close while the hidden stair breathes faint warmth below. He draws the Magic Pouch’s focus and closes his eyes.

He shapes blue-white magic inward, imagining the wide pupils and layered sight of creatures that hunt beneath moonless skies. The spell settles gently behind his eyes.

Artania opens his eyes. The corridor resolves in deep silver detail: wet sigils shine along the walls, water threads glimmer over each step, and distant warmth outlines the passage.

The darkness is no longer empty. I can see its shapes and paths clearly.

The new sight reaches beyond ordinary lamplight without erasing color entirely. Al’s fur, the ward-cloth, and the brass mark remain distinct as the eastern corridor descends.

The released lock gives another muted click somewhere ahead. Nothing blocks the stair, while the silver channels continue guiding their magic toward the sealed mountain route.

“How is all of this being powered? Where is its source? Who built this place? So many unanswered questions. I move slowly forward. Following the tunnel, I tell Al to stay close by my side.”

Artania advances slowly down the descending corridor, placing each boot between the silver water threads. Al stays pressed close at his side, his claws clicking softly on stone.

Stay close, Al.

The moon-sight reveals the tunnel’s construction: fitted black stones, ancient irrigation channels, and hooked sigils carved beneath them. Their lines converge toward a buried chamber ahead.

The water carries the magic east. Whatever powers this place is deeper below.

As they pass beneath a low arch, the brass mark draws warmth from Artania’s palm. The ward-cloth dulls its glow, but its stored protection thins and one blue stitch unravels.

The corridor opens into a round cistern chamber. At its center, a stone heart pulses beneath clear water, feeding the channels and the distant mountain route.

Carved figures around the basin show robed builders guiding water through the earth, though age has erased their faces and any name they left behind. Al gives a quiet warning rumble.

“I inspect the stone heart for danger. Wondering aloud how old this place is.”

How old is this place? I should inspect the stone heart for danger before we go farther.

Artania crouches beside the basin and studies the stone heart through moon-sight. Blue-white lines reveal its shape, channels, seams, and every current of magic beneath the clear water.

The inspection finds no active trap or hostile presence. The heart is a vast, ancient conduit, still regulating the irrigation lattice and feeding the sealed mountain route.

The stone is older than the Capital’s present roads, perhaps several thousand years old.

Faded tool marks beneath the carved figures suggest generations of builders shaped the chamber, while later sigils were added to guide way-magic eastward.

Al lowers his head, accepting the chamber’s silence. The stone heart continues its steady pulse, and the silver water carries its power safely onward.

“I inspect the stone heart’s eastern channels. Wondering where they might lead, I then look east to see if I can find a passage heading that way. If there is one, and if I have any luck, I will find out exactly what is causing all this commotion. Everything I have seen so far is relatively calm, and it all reacts to brass mark.”

Artania traces the stone heart’s eastern channels through moon-sight. Beneath the clear water, they divide into three veins, all carrying the same measured pulse toward the mountain route.

He follows their convergence along the chamber wall, finding a narrow arch hidden behind carved irrigation figures. Warm air flows through it, carrying a faint tremor like distant bells.

The brass mark answers from its ward-cloth with a muted blue glow. Its hooked sigil aligns with the arch, and the sealed passage opens fully without resistance.

Beyond lies an eastern conduit, broader than the stair, where silver water runs through channels cut into the floor. The current bears fragments of way-magic toward a distant vaulted chamber.

Artania advances with Al close beside him. Moon-sight reveals the disturbance’s source ahead: a great gate of black stone, pulsing as the conduit feeds its central seal.

Each pulse sends silver light backward through the irrigation lattice and upward toward the hovering fields. The gate is not failing; it is awakening in response to the brass mark.

At the gate’s base, a shallow basin bears the same hooked sign and a fresh opening eastward beyond the sealed mountain route. The commotion comes from the gate preparing that way.

“I channel blue-white magic into the basin to steady the flowing way-magic. Hoping I don’t cause more of a problem. I grab my focus again to help me concentrate deeply. I place the other hand to my sword hilt to steady myself.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

Artania takes the focus from the Magic Pouch and plants his other hand against the sword hilt. Blue-white magic gathers, steady and deliberate, around the basin.

The spell pours into the hooked sign. The basin’s silver current slows into an even flow, each pulse settling into rhythm instead of surging through the conduit.

The great black gate answers with a deep chime. Its central seal brightens, but the surrounding stones remain still as the way-magic stabilizes beneath Artania’s control.

Al braces beside him, fur lifting at the sound. Moon-sight shows the silver veins distributing their power cleanly, with no fracture or hostile presence forming in the gate.

A clear image resolves across the basin: three mountain routes joined beneath the earth, and one eastern passage now safely open beyond the awakened seal.

The distant bells fall silent. In their place, the conduit carries a low harmonious tone toward the vaulted chamber, inviting passage while the stabilized magic continues to flow.
