Adventure of Noah 1

The main den holds the entire pack beneath collapsed concrete and tangled roots. No wolf remains outside; their bodies form a quiet ring around Noah in the damp warmth.

A faint electronic chirp pulses beneath the concrete floor. After a pause, another answers from deeper in the den, then a third from near the covered drainage channel.

The alpha rises, broad shoulders brushing the low roots. He lowers his charcoal-gray muzzle to the packed earth, scenting mud, old concrete, wet fur, and something sharp beneath them.

The injured wolf presses close to the others, keeping its freed hind leg tucked away. Several packmates lift their heads as the chirps shift positions without any visible machine.

Noah shapes the words into low clicks and breathy notes, then steps from the den toward the covered drainage channel. The pack parts around her without protest.

Noah follows damp pawprints and bent fern stems into the drainage passage, scanning for movement. Rainwater carries old scents, but no living prey crosses her path.

At the passage mouth, her hunt falls short. A sudden electronic chirp rolls through the concrete, scattering the remaining animal tracks and warning that the signal reaches here.

Noah finds fresh edible roots and a narrow side tunnel marked by recent airflow, enough to return with food and a usable path that avoids the buried signal.

Noah ignores the drainage passage and circles the den through wet brush, reading pawprints, snapped stems, and faint movements beneath the rain-dark canopy.

A small feral hare, an adult female with tawny fur, dark eyes, and a white tail, breaks from tangled roots beside a collapsed service pillar. Noah cuts across its path and catches it cleanly before it reaches the open forest.

The capture succeeds, but the hare's struggle knocks a loose metal panel against the pillar. The sharp clang rolls through the den entrance and into the ravine.

Noah returns with the meal clutched against her fur clothing. Rainwater has washed away her trail, but the panel continues to tick softly as it settles.

The wolves gather around the hare, alert ears turning toward the ravine between bites. The buried chirp continues below, but Noah has brought the pack food without entering its route.

The alpha steps aside. Fresh claw marks score the packed earth near the den’s center, exposing a narrow black device wedged beneath a fractured slab.

A blue indicator glows behind the slab, pulsing in time with the distant chirps. Thin cables disappear into older corporate conduit beneath the den.
