The Signal Beneath the Roots

The wolves hold a guarded circle beneath the pines. Noah kneels beside the injured packmate, sword tip poised against the restraint brace while rain ticks on its metal housing.

She makes one precise cut. The brace falls away, and the locator bead blinks once before releasing a sharp burst of blue light into the wet darkness.

The bead goes dark. Far beyond the trees, a distant receiver answers with a faint electronic chirp, exposing the pack’s direction before the forest swallows the signal.

The injured wolf tests its leg, then rises. The pack closes around Noah and moves from the hollow, paws threading through ferns and roots toward deeper cover.

Noah follows as the denser forest erases the hunters’ fading perimeter. Black branches knit overhead, and the red emergency glow disappears behind rain and trunks.

The wolves lead her through a narrow ravine concealed beneath hanging cables and mossy concrete. One after another, they slip into a dark opening beneath the roots.

Inside, the pack settles around the den’s warm hollow. Outside, something small and metallic clicks once in the undergrowth, then falls silent.

“"goodnight" i say in wolfish before sleeping for the knight”

The den’s warm hollow gathers the pack close. Damp fur, moss, and old concrete soften the rain’s distant tapping beyond the root-bound entrance.

Noah

Goodnight.

Noah gives the word its wolfish shape, carrying it in a low breath threaded with clicks and soft notes. The pack lifts their heads toward her.

The injured wolf settles beside her, its freed leg tucked beneath its body. Another presses against Noah’s back, sharing the den’s steady warmth.

One by one, the wolves lower their muzzles onto their paws. Their breathing falls into a slow rhythm while rain whispers through the cables above.

The pack is safe for tonight.

Noah rests within the guarded circle as the hidden den goes still. Outside, the forest keeps its secrets, and the night passes without disturbance.

“when i wake up i check if anyone is out side”

The Signal Beneath the Roots

Gray morning seeps into the den. Noah wakes within the wolves’ warmth and listens past their breathing to the rain-muted forest outside.

She rises without disturbing the pack and crouches at the root-bound entrance. Wet cables sway overhead, tapping softly against mossy concrete.

Noah

Noah

No voices. No footsteps. No active scanner sweep.

Through the hanging roots, Noah scans the ravine in both directions. The forest is empty of hunters, drones, and moving lights; only rain and steam drift between the trees.

A cable hidden under the moss snaps against her palm as she shifts position, opening a shallow cut. The sharp crack makes two wolves lift their heads.

The pack settles again when no answering sound follows. Outside remains clear for now, though Noah’s brief inspection leaves a bright smear of blood on the root.

Beyond the entrance, the ravine lies empty beneath the washed-out sky. Far away, a single corporate siren fades, leaving the den concealed and quiet.

“We should head back to the main den. What do you think, Alpha?” Noah asks in wolvish, her voice shaped into low clicks and breathy notes.

The alpha wolf, a large adult male wolf with thick charcoal-gray fur and a pale scar across one shoulder, lifts his broad head. Rain beads along his dark muzzle, and his ears turn toward the ravine before returning to Noah.

Alpha Wolf

Alpha Wolf

“Back. The deep den hides us better. We move while the metal hunters search elsewhere.”

He rises and nudges the injured wolf gently toward the rear of the pack. The others form around it, alert but no longer tense.

The pack is moving together, and the tracking bead is gone.

Noah follows the alpha through the root-bound passage. The pack threads beneath hanging cables, crosses the concealed ravine, and reaches the main den by a covered drainage channel.

The main den lies beneath collapsed concrete and thick roots, warmer and wider than the night hollow. The wolves settle inside as rain fades behind their layered bodies.
