Across the Shimmering Boundary

Hagrtich emerges from the concealed side channel onto a humid jungle track, mud coating his cloak and scales. His wounded shoulder throbs beneath the grime, while his pack holds every recovered artifact.

Ahead, the Waking World buckles into Verdanta’s familiar jungle forms. Trees lean into new shapes, mist ripples sideways, and shimmering barriers open without separating the kingdom from the surrounding world.

The angular relic grows heavy against the copper token, coffer, moonstones, amber bead, and spiral-etched key. Together, the treasures exert one ominous pull toward Verdanta’s depths.

Hagrtich passes through the wavering boundary. For one breath, the jungle becomes impossible: roots curl overhead, distant hills fold inward, and warm magic prickles across his mud-dried scales.

An old path appears between flowering trees, paved in half-sunken stones and familiar to Beastfolk memory. It winds inward toward the guild, where an immense reward awaits his completed delivery.

He follows the path alone, leaving the buried laboratory, the vizier, the surviving attendant, and the shadowed presence far behind. No pursuit crosses the shimmering boundary after him.

At last, carved guild markers emerge among the vines. Their painted symbols slowly rearrange, and the deepest one points beyond the guild road toward the same unseen depths tugging at his pack.

Deliver the recovered artifacts to the guild

“Ease settles over me as I cross into Verdanta. It's familiar air stirring a pride within me that encourages me to stand tall, and unafraid. I follow the old stone path toward the guild and its promised reward, though still keeping my senses attuned to my surroundings, aware that rouges are abundant at the kingdom's borders. If one is to appear, I will not shy away from fighting them to keep my riches.”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Across the Shimmering Boundary

Warm Verdantan air settles over Hagrtich as he crosses the living boundary. He straightens to his full height, mud-dried cloak hanging from his shoulders, and walks without fear.

The old stone path shifts gently beneath flowering branches, its half-sunken paving stones remaining firm enough for his careful stride. Familiar scents of wet bark, pollen, and distant water fill the jungle.

Hagrtich keeps his iron-grey eyes moving and his nostrils open. Vine shadows, leaning trunks, and rippling mist reveal no ambush, while the layered pack stays tight against his back.

The path bends through dense green growth. His claws remain ready, and his wounded shoulder throbs beneath the grime, but neither pain nor border-roving danger interrupts his advance.

The path is clear, and my treasures remain secured.

Painted guild markers emerge among the vines, their symbols rearranging in slow, harmless patterns. Hagrtich follows their deepest sign along the final stretch toward the guild.

He reaches the Verdantan guild road beneath towering blossoms, with the promised reward waiting within its domain. The relics remain in his possession, and no rogue bars his arrival.

“Do I reach the guild safely without encountering any rouges along the way?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 64)

Across the Shimmering Boundary

The guild road remains quiet beneath the towering blossoms. No rogue emerges from the vines, and no hostile sign disturbs the shifting painted markers as Hagrtich approaches.

Beyond the final bend, the guild’s broad stone entrance rises from the living jungle, its carved lintel changing patterns only in slow, familiar cycles.

Hagrtich Ssazar

The road has held steady, and nothing has challenged my passage.

Warm lamplight spills across the threshold, touching the mud-dried edge of Hagrtich’s cloak. The air carries old incense, wet stone, and the guarded scent of sealed vaults.

His layered pack stays fastened against his back, every recovered treasure intact: the angular relic, the copper token, moonstones, amber bead, and spiral-etched key.

Nothing follows from the Waking World. The laboratory, vizier, the surviving attendant, and shadowed presence remain beyond Verdanta’s shimmering boundary as Hagrtich reaches the guild safely.

“I cross the threshold and call for the guild’s receiving hand. "Glory to Verdanta. I have returned with treasures aplenty. I expect a succulent reward for my efforts."”

Hagrtich crosses the guild’s broad stone threshold. Warm lamplight washes over his mud-dried cloak and wounded shoulder as the shifting lintel settles into a welcoming pattern.

Glory to Verdanta. I have returned with treasures aplenty. I expect a succulent reward for my efforts.

A middle-aged Beastfolk woman with an avian face, russet feathers, and a severe green mantle steps from the receiving hall. Brass chains mark her office, and one cloudy eye studies the secured pack.

The Receiving Hand

The Receiving Hand

Glory indeed, returned thief. Set your pack upon the oath-stone, and the guild will reckon every treasure before witnesses.

She gestures toward a waist-high black stone beside the lamplit counter. Its carved surface brightens beneath the pack’s hidden contents, recognizing relic-work, worked copper, moonstones, amber, and iron.

The Receiving Hand

The Receiving Hand

The guild confirms a substantial delivery, including one artifact of uncommon significance. Your reward will be succulent, as promised, though the accounting must distinguish hazard from theft.

Behind her, attendants draw back a bronze-barred inner door and prepare a cushioned receiving tray. No hand reaches for Hagrtich’s treasures yet; the guild accepts his return and begins the reckoning.

“"Very good. I shall have away with my procured items." I unload everything. The green-aged copper token, angular relic, three moonstones, amber bead, and black iron key, all onto the black stone. "There will be no such need for accounting, receiving feather. I will tell of the hazard I encountered personally."”

Very good. I shall have away with my procured items.

Hagrtich loosens the layered pack and unloads its contents onto the black oath-stone: the copper token, angular relic, three moonstones, amber bead, and spiral-etched key.

The stone answers with layered radiance. Copper glows green, the moonstones shine pale, and the angular relic casts a cold shadow through the lamplight.

You may tell it, returned thief, but the oath-stone will still reckon what your tongue omits.

The receiving hand leans over the displayed treasures without touching them. Her cloudy eye fixes on the angular relic, while attendants gather close around the cushioned tray.

Begin with the breach, the chained horror, and the hand that loosed it. Then we shall decide whether your hazard merits the promised reward.

“I recount the hazard: including my escaping of the hidden sorcerer's laboratory, evasion of the vizier, the shadowed presence which subsequently pursued me after I procured the majority of my treasures from an abandoned brazier, and my clever, eventual escape.”

I recount escaping the hidden sorcerer’s laboratory, evading the vizier, and procuring most of my treasures from an abandoned brazier.

Hagrtich’s account carries across the receiving hall: the broken wards, the chained horror, the sealed passage, and his flight into the cold wilderness.

I tell how the shadowed presence pursued me afterward, and how I confused its trail through dust, thorn, water, mud, and shifting ground.

The oath-stone flares beneath the treasures. Green light crawls from the copper token to the spiral key, while the angular relic casts a blade of darkness across the floor.

I finish by recounting my descent through the ravine, my concealment beneath the water, and my eventual escape into Verdanta.

The stone accepts the hazard, returned thief. You escaped a sorcerer’s ruin and a hunting darkness without surrendering your haul.

The receiving hand raises one clawed finger. Attendants begin wrapping the lesser treasures, two young adult men in cream-and-brown guild livery with close-cropped hair and lean builds,, while a bronze coffer is brought forward for the angular relic.

“My iron-grey eyes drift from the receiving hand toward the two attendants below. I distinctly notice that they are human, and a low hiss churns through my throat at the sight of them. Humans in Verdanta have always irked me. I look again at the receiving hand. "I await my promised reward in full, receiving feather." A brief pause. "I will preferably have it delivered to me by the hands of our kind, not the human slaves attained from the Waking World. Conserve their filth for their miserable positions."”

Your reward will be delivered in full, returned thief, and by Beastfolk hands. The humans will withdraw from this reckoning.

She snaps two clawed fingers. The young men lower their eyes, carry the lesser treasures behind the bronze-barred door, and vanish from the receiving hall without touching the angular relic.

A pair of Beastfolk attendants emerge carrying a heavy green-lacquered chest between them. They set it before Hagrtich, and its unlocked lid reveals coined gold, cut gems, and sealed reward tablets.
