Shadowed Presence

Hagrtich’s claws sweep through the bronze coffer. Three moonstones, the amber bead, and the black iron key vanish into separate backpack compartments, each clasp secured.

He lifts the angular relic from the basin and stows it deep beneath the layered leather, burying its cold silence among his gathered spoils.

Without hesitation, Hagrtich bounds from the roofless shrine, four clawed feet striking the scrub path as his cloak snaps behind him.

Behind him, the cracked basin ruptures. A vast black limb forces through the opened stone, dragging a shadowed presence into the moonlit night.

The Vizier

The Vizier

After him! The prison has found the surface. Do not let that thief reach the road!

The surviving attendant remains behind in the ruined laboratory, separated from Hagrtich by rubble and the unleashed horror. The vizier’s orders fade beneath grinding stone.

Across the scrub, the pursuit begins. Thorn branches whip Hagrtich’s cloak, while behind him something immense crosses the shrine threshold and follows his scent into darkness.

Hagrtich’s fleeing shape dwindles across the scrub, but the shadowed presence does not slow at the shrine. Its darkness stretches over stones and thorn, following without strain.

The distance between them widens for a few breaths, then contracts again. No boundary pulls the creature back, and no fading tether marks the limit of its pursuit.

Hagrtich Ssazar

It is not bound to the shrine.

Behind the monster, the ruined basin hangs open beneath the moon. Its broken stones settle into stillness, while the creature’s vast silhouette keeps crossing the land.

The Vizier

The Vizier

Keep moving! The road, the hills, the whole cursed countryside are open to it!

The vizier’s voice carries faintly from the ruin, confirming what the shifting shadow makes plain. The pursuit is no temporary reach from a magical threshold.

Beyond the scrub, the dark road descends toward distant hills. The presence follows Hagrtich’s scent into the open world, with nothing in the night promising it must stop.

“I continue running, now transitioning into a quadruped gallop to move even faster. I blitz across the hills, weaving and twisting while galloping to aid what little difficulty I can to the shadowed presence's pursuit of me. I carry on toward the hills, purposefully conserving my stamina by moving only at a necessary pace to keep a decently sized gap.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Hagrtich drops fully onto all fours, his long tail streaming behind him as his four clawed feet find a powerful, measured rhythm across the rising scrub.

He angles across the hills in sharp, deliberate turns, weaving between thorn clusters and pale stones. The cloak snaps and settles with each controlled change of direction.

The gap holds while I keep this pace.

Behind him, the shadowed presence follows the scent-trail over the lower slopes, but Hagrtich's twisting route forces it to cross and recross the broken ground.

He conserves his strength, spending only what the pursuit demands. Moonlit hills pass beneath his claws, and the dark road remains ahead beyond the next ridgeline.

At the crest, Hagrtich cuts sideways through a shallow fold in the land and preserves a decently sized gap. The relics remain secured within his backpack as he continues toward the hills.

“I gallop toward the distant road, continuing to twist and turn while doing so. I run myself through multiple bushes, and purposefully kick up thick clouds of dust and branches in my wake to obscure my pursuer's immediate sight of me.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -1)

Hagrtich gallops downhill toward the distant road, twisting between thorn bushes and pale stones. His claws strike sparks from hidden flint as the hills blur beneath him.

He drives through one bush, then another, snapping branches across his cloak and shoulders. Each passage tears loose a dense veil of leaves, twigs, and pale dust.

With deliberate kicks, Hagrtich churns the loose earth behind him. Thick clouds boil across the slopes, swallowing his recent tracks beneath drifting grit and broken branches.

The shadowed presence enters the dust-choked trail and loses the clear line of his body. Its vast outline shifts among the thorn silhouettes, searching through scent and scattered motion.

Hagrtich Ssazar

The road is close, and the dust has broken its immediate sight.

Hagrtich bursts from the final brush onto the hard-packed road. His backpack remains secured, and the relics stay buried within as he turns along the moonlit route.

Behind him, dust and branches settle over the hillside. The pursuing darkness emerges into the churned confusion, its path obscured while Hagrtich gains the road and distance.

“I continue forward for roughly half a mile, conserving my stamina by moving at a measured, but still expeditious pace. All throughout, I continue clouding my tracks by crashing through brush and kicking up dust. At some point, I make a sharp left, dive low, and twist my way sideways along another hill's slope. I utilize my claws' traction to keep myself anchored, while acrobatically lunging mid-descent from when the earth's loose soil refuses purchase, advancing in a productive series of well-balanced jumps.”

Hagrtich continues along the moonlit road for half a mile at a measured, expeditious pace. His breathing stays controlled while dust and grit churn beneath his claws.

He crashes through successive brush patches and kicks loose earth across the hard-packed track, scattering leaves, broken twigs, and overlapping traces behind him.

Hagrtich Ssazar

The trail is confused, and the road remains clear.

At a chosen bend, Hagrtich cuts sharply left and dives low onto another hill’s slope, his cloak dragging briefly through loose soil.

His claws bite into the incline and hold him fast. Where the earth gives way, he lunges sideways in balanced, acrobatic jumps, landing and driving onward.

The descent carries him across the hillside in a productive zigzag. Dust sheets over his passage, while the distant darkness loses his direct line among thorn and shifting ground.

“As I continue making leaps and bounds across the hillside, does the area break into anywhere I could help conceal my scent?”

YES (Likely, rolled 50)

The hillside breaks open ahead into a narrow ravine, its floor drowned beneath black reeds and slow-moving water. Wet stone, bitter moss, and stagnant mud overwhelm the dry scent of the road.

Beyond the ravine, the slope folds into a field of pale limestone shelves. Wind funnels between the shelves, tearing loose dust and carrying every trace toward the empty hills.

Water, mud, and crosswind can hide the trail.

The shadowed presence reaches the ravine’s rim several breaths later. Its vast outline pauses among the thorn bushes as the clean scent-trail fractures across wet ground and moving air.

The shadowed presence lowers its indistinct mass toward the reeds, but the stagnant water offers too many competing odors. It searches along the bank while the limestone shelves remain unseen beyond the fold.

A dry cleft cuts beneath those shelves, deep enough to break the moonlight and narrow enough to shelter a large body from the open hillside. Its stone is cold, its floor powdered with old mineral dust.

Behind, the pursuing shadow spreads across the ravine’s edge without finding a clear direction. Ahead, the ravine, crosswind, and limestone cleft form several natural veils over the scent-trail.

“By the time the shadowed presence has descended toward the ravine, it has already passed my hiding spot. Silently, I had slipped into the water, then wallowed at it's floor to cover myself thoroughly with mud. Strategically, and taking advantage of my own biology, I leave only my head to break the surface, where my top-facing nostrils can freely breathe air and my eyes can remain peeled within the reeds to track its movement. I'm utterly still, indistinguishable from a stone or log atop the water, if spotted.”

Before the shadow reaches the ravine floor, Hagrtich slips silently into the black water. Mud closes over his scaled body until only his head remains above the surface among the reeds.

His top-facing nostrils draw slow breaths while his iron-grey eyes stay level with the water. Reeds brush his hood and break his outline into the ravine’s motionless debris.

Hagrtich Ssazar

The mud masks my scent, and my nostrils remain clear.

The shadowed presence descends through the reeds, its vast darkness spreading across the bank. Stagnant water folds around its indistinct mass, carrying mud, moss, and bitter plant-scent in every direction.

Hagrtich does not move. His submerged claws rest against the ravine floor, his tail buried beneath silt, while only his eyes track the creature’s slow passage.

The presence passes his hiding place without pause. Its searching darkness drifts onward along the watercourse, leaving Hagrtich concealed among reeds, mud, and floating scraps of dead vegetation.

Beyond him, the shadow continues toward the limestone shelves, following fractured traces that no longer lead to his submerged form. The ravine keeps Hagrtich hidden and still.

“With my pursuer now no longer on my trail, and actively searching elsewhere, I submerge myself completely underwater and lay flat against the silt. I use my limbs economically to aid in stealthily lurching forward without disturbing the water's surface, whilst my powerful tail does the majority of the work, acting like a paddle to push me forward.”

Hagrtich sinks completely beneath the stagnant water, flattening his long body against the silt. Mud settles over his cloak and scales until the surface shows only reeds and dim ripples.

Hagrtich Ssazar

Hagrtich Ssazar

The silt is soft beneath my chest, and the water above remains undisturbed.

He folds his limbs close and advances by measured, economical motions, pressing against the ravine floor rather than stirring the water overhead.

His powerful tail does most of the work. It sweeps slowly through the mud like a submerged paddle, driving his immense body forward in silent, controlled lurches.

Silt clouds briefly around his trailing form, then settles behind him. The current carries the faint disturbance away among moss, reeds, and floating scraps.

Hagrtich glides beneath the surface beyond the shadow’s searching ground, leaving the creature behind at the limestone shelves. His pack stays tight against his back, relics secured within.

“I follow the current into a concealed side channel, where I continue moving undetected underwater until I've sufficiently evaded any remaining chance for the unleashed presence to find me. Only then do I carefully surface, and skitter away on all fours into concealing brush, and away from the area.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -1)

The Shrine Horror Pursues

The current draws Hagrtich beneath a shelf of submerged stone, into a concealed side channel where the ravine’s stagnant water narrows and darkens.

He follows the passage with his body pressed low, tail sweeping the silt in slow strokes. Mud and cold water carry every disturbance away from the hidden channel.

Hagrtich Ssazar

Hagrtich Ssazar

The current carries my scent beyond the ravine.

The channel bends beneath limestone and emerges behind a curtain of roots. Hagrtich continues until the shadowed presence is far behind, its darkness absent from the water and banks.

Only then does he rise carefully, breaking the surface among reeds and hanging roots. He pauses, listening to the quiet water before drawing himself onto the bank.

Hagrtich skitters away on all fours, mud-dark cloak clinging to his scaled frame. He slips into dense concealing brush, and the channel hides his retreat behind him.
