The violet haze surges around the map table, then whips low across the floorboards like a living tide. Gamling stands rigid, mid-account, as the boards groan beneath everyone’s feet.

A crack splits the wood. Beneath it, a dark seam of stone glows with an ancient metallic pulse, as if something buried is beating against the keep itself.

Gamling

Gamling

By the Mark... that is no ordinary haunting.

The Black-Liveried Men snap their blades free, but they do not turn on Randwulf. They aim downward, white-faced, toward the trembling fissure.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

Stay back. If that seal breaks, we may lose more than the chamber.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Saruman has bound something under the floor.

The crack widens just enough to show a flash of iron-dark metal, pulsing in time with the violet shimmer below. Helm's Deep is not merely haunted. It is being held shut.

"Saruman has left us all in a dangerous position. But we cannot let this reckless experiment, whatever it may be, continue. What about the men sealed away below? Shall we simply flee and leave them in mortal peril?"

Saruman has left us all in a dangerous position, but we cannot let this reckless work continue. What of the men sealed below, shall we flee and leave them in peril?

Gamling

Gamling

No. We do not abandon our own, nor the keep that bears Helm’s name.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

Then we break the silence by force, if we must. I have obeyed long enough.

Black-Liveried Man 1

Captain, give the word, and I will help lift the boards.

Black-Liveried Man 2

Black-Liveried Man 2

Aye, if this thing is holding men beneath stone, it ends now.

Gamling

Gamling

Randwulf, your warning is well given. Help us hold the chamber steady while we free them.

Gamling and the Lieutenant step to the fissure together, and the black-liveried men lower their blades to pry at the broken boards. The violet glow flickers, then thins, as if the hidden power yields to their joined resolve.

Randwulf obeys the captain's instructions.

Randwulf sets his shield against the stone and holds the chamber with the others. The floor trembles through his boots, but the shaking stays contained.

The loosened boards groan wider. Beneath them, the iron-dark shape goes still, its violet pulse guttering like a dying torch.

Gamling

Gamling

Hold fast. They are moving something under us.

A cold draft knifes up from the breach, carrying dust and a sour, buried scent. The black-liveried men flinch, but keep working.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

It weakens. Keep your hands there, Randwulf.

Randwulf obeys, and the quiver in the floor eases at once. The cost bites a heartbeat later, a sharp sting in his braced palm where a splinter drives under the skin.

Black-Liveried Man 2

Black-Liveried Man 2

There, Captain. The binding is slackening... but it is not gone.

The chamber steadies, yet somewhere below, something silent shifts in the dark, waiting for the next hand to reach for it.

"As I recall, this fortress was originally built by the Númenóreans, a sister to Isengard and both meant to guard the western border of Calenardhon. Could they be connected somehow? Perhaps our good friend and protector, Lord Saruman, is attempting to open this ancient connection? Whatever it is, we must find some way to stop it. Maybe the ghost could show us the way."

A Númenórean foundation, kin to Isengard. If Saruman has joined old works to old works, he may be turning the keep itself into a seal.

The thought lands in the chamber like a dropped spear point. Around the breach, the men still their hands, listening as Randwulf names the age of the stones and the name of Saruman together.

Gamling

Gamling

Connected, yes. I had feared as much. These chambers were raised to stand against the west, not to be shackled to it.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

Then the wizard is not merely hiding something beneath us. He is using the old work against itself.

Look to the iron below. It bears a channel mark, like a gate-latch in stone.

The black shape under the floor gives one thin, resentful pulse, as if hearing its name. From deep below, that same silent motion answers, patient and awake.

Eowyn

Then we stop it here, before it finds the rest of the chain.

A faint crack of strain runs through the exposed ironwork. Dust sifts down, and the loosened boards hold, but only just.

Randwulf

That looks like rather a long jump. Is there a safer way down than breaking one's neck?

Gamling

Gamling

Yes. There is an inner stair behind the western arch. I had kept it barred, but the seal below is loosening it now.

Gamling crosses to the arch and wrenches aside a half-hidden latch. Stone grinds, and a narrow stair yawns open in the wall, steep and shadowed.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

We can take it together, and reach the chamber beneath before the floor gives way again.

Randwulf reaches the threshold, the breach below coughing a thin violet pulse. The boards shiver once, then settle as the hidden stair stands revealed.

Eowyn

Then do not linger. Whatever holds this keep is waiting for us down there.

Taking a deep breath, he proceeds downwards.

Randwulf lowers his breath, squares his shield, and steps into the hidden stair. The chamber behind him dims as the opening narrows to a violet seam.

Stone presses close on both sides. The steps drop fast, and the weak light from below turns the walls bruise-dark.

Above, Gamling and the others hold at the mouth of the arch, watching him descend while dust keeps sifting from the ceiling in pale threads.

The iron-dark pulse beneath the keep gives one dull throb, then gutters lower, as if the stair itself is carrying Randwulf away from it.

At the foot of the stair, a door of blackened timber stands half-swollen in its frame. The violet glow leaks around its edges.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

Careful. That door was not meant to be opened from this side.

Randwulf reaches the landing before the sealed way, and the hidden chamber beyond waits in tense silence.

He studies the door for a moment.

Randwulf studies the blackened door in silence, and the violet leak around its seams resolves into a pattern of scorched runes and fresh tool marks.

Randwulf

Randwulf

The hinges are newer than the frame.

A thin iron plate is set into the left jamb, hidden under soot. It bears a spiral cut through with a warding nail, crude but recent.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

That plate was added after the first stirrings below. It is a latch for the seal, not a lock for us.

Randwulf shifts his grip and traces the edge by sight alone. The door is not trapped to spring open, but the seal itself is tied to the plate, and the mechanism waits for a hand or blade to break the right line.

Gamling

Gamling

If that line is severed, the door yields. If it holds, the thing beneath holds with it.

The violet glow thins to a weak pulse, and the hidden chamber breathes once behind the timber, as though listening.

He attempts to remove the nail.

Randwulf hooks the warding nail with his blade and twists. The nail bends with a dry shriek, but the iron plate bites back, jerking the steel off-line and scraping sparks across the soot.

Randwulf

Randwulf

It is sunk deeper than it looks.

The plate does not come free. Instead, it shifts a fingerbreadth, and a seam beneath it opens just enough to show a second cut, finer than the first, running into the stone.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

Careful, that is not only a fastener. It answers the seal.

A cold draft breathes out from the crack. The violet seam above the door gutters, then steadies, thinner now, as if the hidden chamber has felt the wound.

Gamling

Gamling

There. The line is exposed. If it is broken cleanly, the door may answer differently.

Randwulf’s blade leaves a bright nick in the plate, but the nail stays half-seated, stubborn and trembling. Below, something in the dark gives one soft, muffled thud against the timber.

He attempts to pry open the seam.

Randwulf pries again, and the seam yields with a hard snap. The iron plate slides a handspan aside, exposing black stone scored by a deep, clean cut. Cold air spills up from below, carrying a low, buried pulse.

Randwulf

Randwulf

The cut runs farther than the plate.

The hidden line inside the jamb opens at once, and a faint violet wash leaks across Randwulf’s gloves. Dust sloughs from the frame in a thin sheet.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

By the Mark, it takes it. Hold fast, Randwulf.

Below them, the muffled thud comes again, louder this time, and the floor above gives a brief, uneasy tremor.

Gamling

Gamling

It answers the break. Now, before it seals again.

The violet seam gutters, then widens in a crooked line, as if something beneath the keep has been forced to notice the wound. The mechanism is open, but the chamber shudders under it.

He follows instructions.

Randwulf bears down and the hidden plate gives way at last. The black stone seam opens with a dry crack, and the door’s face shifts inward on buried weight.

Cold violet light spills up in a hard line, then breaks into a wider glow beneath the threshold. Dust pours into the stairwell as the keep gives a deeper, groaning shiver.

Randwulf

Randwulf

The seal is broken.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

It yields. Gods, it yields.

Gamling steps in close, staring into the opened seam as if he can see the shape of the thing below. The murmur of the buried mechanism falters, but does not die.

Gamling

Gamling

There, beneath the keep, is the source. Saruman has bound it into the stone.

A low pulse rolls through the floor, then settles into a strained, watchful hush. The passage stands open, and something under Helm’s Deep seems to wait for who comes next.
