The stair empties into a vaulted chamber swathed in violet haze. The floor gives off a faint, restless hum, like a struck string held under a boot.

At the map table, Captain Gamling looks up, grim and drawn, one hand braced on the wood. Around him, the Black-Liveried Men stand rigid and silent, their eyes fixed inward, not on you.

The vibration is strongest here, under the table.

Gamling

Gamling

You should not be here. If Saruman has sent you, speak quickly. If not, leave before this chamber wakes.

From beneath the planks comes a colder pulse, and the haze parts for one dreadful instant. A towering spectral shape flickers at the edge of sight, helm bright as moonlit steel, then vanishes.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

By the king, that is Helm. The quarantine is no watch against sickness. It is keeping something in.

Gamling turns sharply toward the floor, jaw tight. The Black-Liveried Men exchange uneasy glances, and the hidden rite below the chamber seems suddenly close enough to break through.

"I salute you, good captain. I see you no longer recognize me, which is understandable. It has been many years since we last met. But surely you remember Randwulf, the little boy who used to run errands for Lord Erkenbrand? And these are Eomer and Eowyn, the king's nephew and niece, respectively. We have come on his behalf. He needs a report on the situation here. Urgently, I believe he said."

Randwulf gives a measured salute and lays out the names and the message cleanly, as if presenting a report instead of begging for one.

Gamling

Gamling

So. Erkenbrand's boy. I do remember the errands. You have grown into a better soldier than messenger.

Gamling

Gamling

And you, Eomer and Eowyn, come in person to peer into a throat that may yet swallow us all. Bold enough. Foolish enough.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

He knows them at once. Good. Perhaps there is still a road through this after all.

Gamling eases one palm off the table, not in surrender, but in trust enough to listen.

Gamling

Gamling

Very well. I will give Theoden a report, but hear this first. Saruman's orders came before the ghost did. The silence here was commanded, not discovered.

Gamling

Gamling

If the king asks why Helm is seen in his own deep, I will answer. If he asks who has been turning this keep into a graveyard's mouth, I will answer that too. Will you carry my words, Randwulf?

"I am yours to command."

I am yours to command, Captain. I will carry your words to King Theoden.

Gamling

Gamling

Good. Then hear them plainly, and miss none of it. Saruman has twisted this keep into a lie, and I have had to stand inside that lie until my own mouth tasted of it.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant

At last, a clean road. If the captain speaks, the king may yet learn the truth before more harm is done.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Then speak all of it, Captain. We did not come through that stair to be fed half-truths.

Gamling

Gamling

Half-truths are for men who fear daylight. Helm has not left this place by chance, and neither has Saruman. Something beneath us is being worked, watched, and held in silence.

The dim shimmer under the floorboards stirs once, and the violet haze leans in the same breath, as if the chamber itself is listening.

Gamling

Gamling

Take my report, Randwulf, and tell Theoden I ask for his judgment openly. Will you stand witness for me as well?
