The Stranger leads Boffo from the shouting lane back to the ring of stones. The air there seems tighter, as if the moor itself is holding its breath.

The bundle of stolen goods at the Stranger’s side gives a low twitch, then the stones answer with a deep hum that shivers through Boffo’s boots.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Now you see it. The orcs were not hunting plunder. They were carrying a key into an older lock.

He strips away the last of his disguise, and the weathered gear of a Ranger shows plain under the road-dust. The stones kindle with pale light, tracing their carvings.

Boffo Hardbottle

Boffo Hardbottle

The ring is waking up.

Sawyer Krump

Sawyer Krump

By the Shire, what is that thing? And what did the drover bring near us?

The Stranger

The Stranger

Not a drover. A bearer, and perhaps a bait. The wounded woman was never only what she seemed.

Protect Greenfields from the awakening power

Boffo searches his Lore for clues. "Rings of stones were used long ago to protect burial sites. Looks like this one might be waking up. I'm not sure my bow will be of use here."

Boffo digs through old border lore and finds the shape of it at last, a ward-ring, meant to wake when touched by a bearer of burden. Burial stone, yes, but also a watch-stone. Not a grave alone, a warning.

Boffo Hardbottle

Boffo Hardbottle

So the ring is meant to stir when danger comes.

The light crawling over the carvings answers his thought at once, and the hairs on his arms rise. The hum is no longer empty noise, it is a summons.

Sawyer Krump

Sawyer Krump

A warning, you say? Then warn us plainly, Bounder, what does it wake for?

Boffo shifts his grip on the bow, and the old strain of forgotten names returns with the answer, but the effort costs him. A sharp sting opens his thumb where the string bites, and a fresh drop of blood darkens the dust at his feet.

The stones flare brighter. Across the moor, the scattered orc line falters, and shouted orders snap back and forth from the dark. The ring is not hiding Greenfields, it is stirring something older to stand with it.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then we have no time. If the ring wakes fully, it will call attention as well as aid.

Boffo drags the cut of his thumb over the nearest carved stone, trying to feed the ward-ring a thin red line. The blood smears, then beads and slides away as if the groove itself refuses it.

Boffo Hardbottle

Boffo Hardbottle

The cut is fresh, but the stone will not take it.

The pale light lurches instead of settling. One carved face flashes hard enough to cast sharp shadows, and the humming answer twists into a colder note.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It rejects a mere trickle. It wants a bond, or a burden already laid down.

Sawyer flinches as the flare reaches the moor, and far off the orc cries break into excited shouting. The stones have not been silenced, only provoked.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Look to the gutter in the base, Boffo. The ring is trying to draw the offering inward, not onto the face.

"This is a Man thing, Stranger. It wants Man blood."

This is a Man thing, Stranger. It wants Man blood.

The Stranger stills, then looks from the smear on the dust to the ring’s base as if a lock has just clicked open in his mind.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Yes. Not yours alone. A stronger bearing, a heavier oath. The ring takes what was carried, not what was merely spilled.

He kneels and points into the gutter at the stone’s foot. The ward-light drains downward there, tugging at the blood-stain in the dust like a mouth tasting for more.

Sawyer Krump

Then it is not just a beacon. It is feeding on the old bonds here.

Beyond the moor, the orc shouting sharpens again, answered by another rough cry from deeper in the dark. The stones keep their cold glow, and Greenfields now hangs between warning and summoning.

Not knowing whether it will do any good, he drips a drop of blood where the Stranger indicates.

Boffo lowers his bleeding thumb into the gutter and lets one red drop fall.

The blood vanishes at once, pulled under the stone like water into a crack, and the ward-light shivers brighter along the ring.

A low pulse runs through the monoliths, not like a shout, but like a warning drum heard through earth.

The Stranger

The Stranger

There. It has taken the bond.

Sawyer Krump

Then it means to wake fully... or to wake what listens to it.

The moor answers with another distant cry, closer than before, while the cold light from the stones stretches long shadows toward Greenfields.

He gives it another drop.

Boffo lowers his thumb again and lets another dark drop fall into the gutter.

The stone drinks it at once. A colder light leaks through the carved seams, and the ward-ring answers with a deeper thrum under his boots.

The shadows fling outward, longer now, pointing straight toward Greenfields like accusing fingers.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It wakes further. Good, and dangerous.

Sawyer Krump

Sawyer Krump

By the Hill... it is lighting the road for us, or for whatever follows it.

From the moor comes another shout, rough and distant, while the carved stones keep humming in the dark.

He takes the broken pieces of the relic and puts them next to the stone, where the light falls on them. Perhaps this will waken the lazy spirit.

Boffo kneels at the stone base and sets the broken relic pieces into the gutter, just where the cold light can reach them.

The shards do not wake. The glow slides over their edges like water over dead wood, and the humming in the ring grows thinner, not stronger.

Boffo Hardbottle

Boffo Hardbottle

The pieces are not taking the light.

The Stranger

The Stranger

No. It is not hungry for broken things.

One shard quivers, then slips from the gutter and skitters onto the dust, leaving Boffo's blood in the groove behind it.

Sawyer Krump

Sawyer Krump

Then what does it want, if not the token?

The ward-ring answers by flaring brighter, and the long shadows lurch farther toward Greenfields, while the distant orc shouting draws nearer through the moor.

"Orc blood perhaps? We have plenty of that." He puts another drop of his own in the groove.

Boffo bends lower and lets another drop of his own blood fall into the groove.

This time the stone drinks it at once. The gutter flashes, and the cold hum deepens into a steady note.

The Stranger

The Stranger

There. It has taken the bond again.

The shadows tug toward Greenfields like ropes drawn tight, and the moor answers with a nearer cry from the unseen orcs.

Sawyer Krump

By the light, it is pointing straight at the village.

The ward-ring holds Boffo's blood in its groove, brighter now, as if it has chosen a direction and will not forget it.

"I'm bleeding myself dry," he sighs and gives the stones more blood.

Boffo leans in again and lets the stone take him. The groove drinks, then flashes hot white, and his hand comes away trembling.

Boffo Hardbottle

Boffo Hardbottle

Too much. The ring is taking more than blood now.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Stop there. It has enough of you for the moment.

The ward-ring answers with a deeper hum. Its shadows lengthen, then lock hard toward Greenfields, as if a road has been nailed into the dark.

Sawyer Krump

Sawyer Krump

Then it is either warning the village, or pointing the enemy straight to it.

Boffo's blood darkens in the gutter, slick and bright. The glow holds, but the sting in his hand makes a second offering feel unwise.

The Stranger

The Stranger

We have our answer. Now we must decide whether to trust the stones, or break them before they summon what listens.

Boffo squares his shoulders to the ring and lets the stones speak for themselves. He does not wait for comfort, only for a sign.

The glow narrows at once, not wider, but truer. It tightens into a shaft of cold light, and the southward shadows sharpen like an arrow laid on a string.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It answers the border, not the village. Good. That means the warning is real.

Sawyer Krump

Then Greenfields sees the road before the raiders do.

But the ring's hum deepens under Boffo's hand, and the moor seems to listen back. The fixed line to Greenfields now feels less like a lantern and more like a beacon.

A thin crack runs along one monolith's base, and a sliver of buried stone shows through the turf, marked with old notches like a hidden path's tally. The way is not just warning, it is routing.
