The first orcs break the treeline in a ragged rush, dark shapes hunched low under the branches. Greenfields lies just beyond them, its cottages silent for one breath too long.

Sawyer Krump
By all the buns and buttons, they are here!
Sawyer lurches back from the fence post, eyes wild, while Boffo stands at the narrow gap between wood and village. The arrow in the post quivers like a warning bell.

Boffo Hardbottle
To the village. Sound the alarm.
Sawyer turns at once and bounds for the lane, shouting as he runs. Behind him, the raiders fan out, testing the opening with snarls and clattering boots.
Boffo has the front line now. If he holds here a moment longer, Greenfields gets time to wake, arm, and gather.

Sawyer Krump
Hold them, Boffo... just a little longer.
“He fires again.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Boffo draws and looses in one clean motion. The arrow strikes the lead raider high in the shoulder, spinning him sideways into his mate.
The rush at the fence breaks. One orc drops to a knee, clutching at the shaft, and another stumbles into the ditch before he can leap forward.
Sawyer, halfway down the lane, glances back and sees the gap hold. His alarm turns sharper, and he waves both arms at the cottages.

Sawyer Krump
They are halted, for the moment! Wake the lane, wake the lane!
The raiders recoil from the first pain and the sudden loss of momentum, but more boots hammer at their backs from the wood.

Boffo Hardbottle
The front line is checked.
One raider snatches up the fallen bow shot from the grass, and another points past Boffo toward the fence opening, as if choosing a way through.
“Boffo shoots the one who is pointing, assuming he is the leader.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Boffo shifts his aim a handspan and lets fly. The shaft catches the pointing orc through the throat, and the raider folds backward off the fence line without a cry.
The gesture at the opening dies with him. For one heartbeat the gap is empty, but the surviving orcs jostle and surge around the fall, snarling at the loss.
Sawyer skids to a stop on the lane, one arm still raised toward the cottages, then snaps his head back toward the woods. The alarm he started has reached the first doors.

Sawyer Krump
Hold them there, Boffo! They are trying the fence!
Two raiders lunge at once, one kicking at the trampled grass near the post with the arrow in it, the other forcing forward over their fallen mate. The line wavers, but does not break.

Boffo Hardbottle
The opening is shut.
Behind the raiders, more boots hammer out of the trees, and the advance presses again toward the lane.
“They are getting too close for arrows. Boffo fires one last time and then runs.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Boffo looses again at point-blank range, and the shaft drives into the front raider’s face as he tries to climb the fence. The orc drops off the rails in a spray of leaves and broken rushes.
The gap fills with a shout and a scrape of steel, but Boffo is already moving. He backs away from the post, bow coming low as he turns for the lane.
A returning swing clips his sleeve and draws a hot line across his forearm. The cloth tears, and his grip tightens around the bow.

Sawyer Krump
That’s it, Boffo, fall back to the lane!
Sawyer plants himself by the fence corner, one hand raised toward the cottages, the other grabbing at the post as if he means to hold the whole gap by stubbornness alone.
Behind the raiders, more boots thunder out of the wood. The surviving orcs hesitate over the bodies at the fence, then press in again toward Greenfields.
“Boffo fires again and then falls back to the lane.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo snaps another arrow into the string and looses. The shot thuds into the nearest raider’s shoulder, and the orc jerks sideways off the fence rail with a snarl.
With the gap briefly open, Boffo drops back into the lane, boots skidding in the churned leaves. He gets clear of the fence line as more dark shapes push out of the wood.

Sawyer Krump
Into the lane, Boffo, now! I’ll wake the cottages!
Sawyer wheels from the corner post and hammers his fist on a doorframe as he shouts. The lane answers with shutters banging open and hurried voices starting up.
At the fence, the dead raider lies tangled in rushes while the arrow in the post quivers beside him. Beyond the gap, the surviving orcs bunch together, suddenly slowed by the bodies and the narrow opening.
For one breath, the advance stalls at the border of Greenfields. Then a fresh rush of boots and guttural calls swells from the trees, pressing the fence line again.
“He fires again, hoping to slow them.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo Hardbottle looses again. The arrow hisses over the churned leaves and takes the nearest orc high in the chest, driving him back into the others.
The front rank falters at the fence gap. One raider stumbles into the body at the rail, and the rest jostle for footing where the opening is already choked.

Sawyer Krump
Good shot, Boffo! Keep them there!
From the cottages, shutters bang wider and pale faces crowd the dark windows. The lane behind Boffo fills with waking voices and hurried feet.
Beyond the trees, more boots crash nearer, but the raiders at the fence have lost their rush. The arrow in the post still quivers, a warning standing over the gap.
For the moment, Greenfields holds. The orcs bunch at the broken edge, snarling and waiting for their next push.
“He keeps firing.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo Hardbottle draws and looses again. A second arrow snaps into the knot of raiders at the fence, forcing the front rank to recoil from the gap.
One orc twists aside too late, catches the shaft in his shoulder, and barrels into his own fellows. The fence line holds under the sudden shove, and the bodies at the opening keep the others from pouring through.

Sawyer Krump
That’s it, Boffo! Keep them crowded!
Shutters slam fully open along the cottages. In the lane behind him, hobbit voices harden from sleep-bewildered cries into a hurried, frightened stir.
The arrow already lodged in the post trembles beside Boffo’s fresh shot, two warnings bristling over the broken fence.
For this breath, the raiders cannot surge, and Greenfields buys itself a moment to wake. But the thudding boots in the trees are still coming.

“He keeps firing.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo Hardbottle keeps his stance and sends another shaft over the broken rails. It hits the foremost raider high in the chest, and the knot at the fence jerks backward in sudden disorder.
The raiders shove one another in the cramped gap, trying to drag the fallen clear. Instead, they clog the opening tighter, and their boots skid in the churned earth.

Sawyer Krump
Good, Boffo, keep them there! They are not getting through this lane!
From the cottages, more windows flare open. Sleepy faces harden into alarm as villagers grip hammers, poles, and whatever comes to hand.
Beyond the fence, the treeline stirs with fresh movement. The thudding boots are closer now, but the raiders at the breach cannot advance without trampling their own.
For the moment, the lane is sealed by bodies and splintered wood. Greenfields holds, but only as long as Boffo keeps the raiders pressed hard against the gap.
“He continues firing.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo Hardbottle looses again, fast and flat. The shaft thuds into an orc shoulder, and the raiders flinch back from the gap as one.
Their front rank buckles under the pressure. One slips over the fallen body at the rail, and another hammers into him from behind, turning the breach into a knot of snarling elbows and bent blades.

Sawyer Krump
That is it, Boffo, keep them there! The lane is ours if they cannot move!
Across the cottages, shutters bang open wider. Villagers cluster at windows with poles, axes, and iron hooks, staring down at the jammed fence in dawning, hard-eyed courage.
From the trees comes a second rush of boots, but the first line cannot advance to meet it. The fence mouth is sealed by bodies, arrows, and broken rail.

Sawyer Krump
They are stopped, for the moment. If more come, we shall need every hand in Greenfields.
The raiders remain pinned at the breach, unable to force through. Beyond them, the woods keep muttering with approaching feet.
“He fires so long as he has targets.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Boffo sends another arrow, then another. The orc line shudders under the impacts, blades wobbling as they try to shove over their own fallen.
One raider drops to a knee at the fence mouth, then sprawls sideways into the gap. The broken rails bite deeper into the pile, and the breach chokes shut under boots and bloodied mail.

Sawyer Krump
Good. Keep pressing them! They cannot come through that heap now!
Across the lane, a villager hauls a shutter wider and thrusts a spear-tip through the frame. More hands rise at the windows, no longer hiding.
From the trees behind the raiders, the answering shouts swell again, but the front rank is stuck fast and cannot turn to meet it.
The fence line changes state, from a breach to a barricade. For the moment, Greenfields holds.
“He keeps firing.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -2)

Boffo keeps loosing, one arrow after another, into the packed raiders at the fence mouth. The heap of bodies jerks under the impacts, and the front rank loses all shape.
One shaft punches into an orc’s shoulder and spins him sideways into the pile. The cost lands with the shot, Boffo’s forearm stinging as the bowstring slaps hard against it.

Sawyer Krump
That is it, keep them there! Do not let them climb over!
At the windows, villagers push farther into view, spearpoints and farm tools bristling over shutters. The fence gap holds as a choking knot of iron, rails, and fallen raiders.
Behind the raiders, the answering shouts from the wood rise and then falter. The ones at the fence cannot turn, cannot rush, cannot break through.
For the moment, the lane is sealed by the barricade Boffo has helped make. Greenfields stands, but the sound of more enemies still presses at the treeline.
“He fires so long as he has targets.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Boffo keeps firing until the last clear targets vanish into the churn at the fence mouth. An orc drops backward over the rails, and another staggers blind into the pile before the lane goes briefly still.
The front of the raid collapses under its own dead weight. No raider remains standing at the gap, only splintered wood, lodged arrows, and the heaped bodies sealing the breach.

Sawyer Krump
Hold, all of you! Keep your doors shut and your blades ready!
From the treeline, the answering shouts thin and then stop short. The assault at the fence is broken, but the wood still hides movement beyond the dark.
Villagers at the windows do not retreat. They brace there, staring over the barricade as if waiting for the next rush that never comes.
For this moment, Greenfields stands behind a sealed gap of bodies and broken rails. The road ahead is quiet, but the woods are not.
“He climbs over the bodies of dead orcs, trying to get a glimpse of what is coming.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Boffo climbs the heap of ruined rails and fallen raiders, boots slipping on broken wood. From the crest, he gets a hard look into the trees, where the dark line of the wood stirs but does not break.

Boffo Hardbottle
The fence is sealed. The woods still move.
Below him, Sawyer turns from the lane and looks up at the new vantage. His hand stays lifted toward the cottages, but his attention snaps to Boffo’s warning angle.

Sawyer Krump
What do you see up there?
Boffo sees no charge, only scattered movement and a wider shadow shifting between trunks, as if the raiders have paused to regroup. The arrow still quivers in the fence post beside the gap.
The villagers keep their places at the windows and doorways, waiting on his word. The barricade holds for now, but the next decision belongs to the line of sight he has just won.
“"They have paused to regroup. Keep ready." He takes a more sheltered position, in case the attackers also have bows.”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -3)

Boffo ducks lower behind the slumped rails, settling into the broken teeth of the barricade. The fence gap disappears behind him, and the treeline becomes something he can watch without standing proud against it.

Boffo Hardbottle
The roots and rails give him cover.
A thin hiss cuts through the leaves, and an arrow thuds into the wood above him. It splits a rail and showers him with chips, but the shot goes wide of his head.
Sawyer flinches below, then raises both hands and shouts to the cottages, his voice sharp with alarm. The windows answer with movement, not panic, as hobbits begin to bolt doors and grab what they can carry.

Sawyer Krump
Stay down, Boffo. They have archers now!
The arrow in the fence post quivers beside the sealed breach, and the dark line of the woods finally shifts forward again. The raid is no longer at the fence, it is pressing from range, and Greenfields braces for the next rush.
“"Take cover! They're coming!"”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Boffo lifts his voice from behind the rails, and the warning carries cleanly over the lane. The nearest windows snap shut at once, and the hobbits below duck deeper into cover.

Sawyer Krump
Aye, I hear you! Keep low, Boffo!
The raiders answer with a hard rush from the treeline, but their line breaks on the barricade of bodies and broken wood. The fence does not give.
Sawyer turns from the cottages and plants himself at the lane corner, one hand out to keep a pair of villagers back. His alarm becomes command as he points them toward doors and shutters.

Boffo Hardbottle
They have archers in the woods.
Another arrow hisses in and sticks in the post beside the old shaft, close enough to tremble the splinters loose. The gap stays blocked, but the pressure from the woodline does not ease.

Sawyer Krump
Hold them there, Boffo, and do not show your head!
“He seeks a gap in the debris that he can shoot arrows through without exposing himself.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo shifts lower behind the broken rails, finds a narrow slit between splintered boards, and settles his bow on it. The opening is just wide enough for the arrow shaft, not his head.

Boffo Hardbottle
That gap will do.
He looses from cover. The arrow snaps through the fence break and vanishes into the treeline, hidden from any answering shot.
Across the lane, the fence post still bristles with arrows, but the raiders' front line hesitates as one more shaft whistles out of the dark.

Sawyer Krump
Good, keep using it! Keep their heads down!
The lane stays blocked, yet the pressure from the woodline slackens for a breath, as if the attackers have lost sight of the hobbit behind the rails.
“He peers through the slit, seeking targets.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Boffo narrows his eye to the slit and finds the raiders at last. Two shapes shift low by the treeline, one dragging a spear, the other ducking behind a stump as if afraid to show his head.

Boffo Hardbottle
Two there, left of the ash. One crouched, one moving.
Sawyer glances the same way, then points once and hard, the way a man does when he cannot afford to be wrong.

Sawyer Krump
There, Boffo. If you can see them, keep them pinned. I am taking the lane!
The call goes up behind the cottages. Windows slam, a door bangs, and the fence corner trembles as more feet gather on the other side of the lane.
One raider creeps forward from the dark, testing the gap with a blade. The arrow in the fence post quivers as something brushes past it from the woodline.
Boffo keeps the slit covered. The orcs have found the fence, but they have not found his face.
“He shoots the one who is creeping forward.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo looses the shot through the slit. The arrow strikes the creeping raider under the arm, and the orc jerks back with a wet gasp, dropping flat in the grass.
For a heartbeat, the lane seems to hold its breath. The spear slips from the dead raider's fingers, and the gap at the fence stops moving.

Sawyer Krump
Good, Boffo! That one is down. Keep them from the post!
Sawyer breaks for the cottages, shouting for lamps and axes, while the arrow in the fence post still quivers beside the slit.
From the woodline, another shape drags itself clear of the shadows, but the fallen raider has blocked the gap with his body.
The fence corner shudders under fresh feet on the far side. Greenfields is still holding, but only just.
“He fires at whatever is coming.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo sends another arrow through the ragged gap. It thuds into the next raider’s throat, and the orc folds backward into the trampled grass.
The fence line jerks and settles. For a breath, the bodies at the breach make a wall, and the lane beyond stays clear.

Sawyer Krump
That’s it, Boffo, keep them back! They’re breaking on the fence!
From the treeline, the last shapes hesitate at the fallen raiders, forced to slow before the choke point.
Sawyer reaches the cottage steps and starts hammering on doors again, his voice carrying hard over the yards.
The arrow in the fence post still quivers above the gap, and the woods answer with distant shouts, but the rush at Greenfields has stopped short.
“He looks for targets.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Boffo’s eyes rake the treeline, and the shapes there stop being a blur. One raider crouches behind a stump with a bent spear, another drags a bow from cover, and a third, farther back, lifts a hand to signal the woods.

Boffo Hardbottle
Three left in sight, with more behind them.
The fence gap stays choked with the fallen, but fresh movement threads between the trunks beyond. The arrow in the fence post still quivers above the breach like a warning finger.

Sawyer Krump
Boffo! How many are still out there?
Sawyer throws his voice toward the cottages without looking back, and a few shutters crack open, then snap shut again at the woods' answering shouts.
Beyond the bodies at the fence, the raiders do not surge. They spread instead, probing for another way through while the lane holds under the weight of the barricade.
“"I don't know. One less now." He fires at the archer.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Boffo Hardbottle
I don't know. One less now.
Boffo looses. The arrow snaps over the barricade and finds the bowman in the treeline, jerking him backward out of cover.
The raider’s bow flies from his hand. He slumps into the roots and does not rise.

Sawyer Krump
Good. Keep them down, Boffo!
The signaler falters at the sight of his fallen mate, hand still raised. Behind him, the woods answer with rough shouts, but the nearest push against Greenfields breaks on the fence of bodies.
For a heartbeat, the lane is held. The cottages stay shut, the post still quivers, and the raiders beyond the trees hesitate at the edge of the light.
“He looks for any orcs who may be circling around the fence.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Boffo Hardbottle sweeps the lane with a hunter’s eye, past the fence gap and out along the dark hedge. Not a raider comes straight on. One shape edges low behind the ditch, and another slips between two alder trunks, trying to round the barricade.

Boffo Hardbottle
There are flankers.
Sawyer Krump snaps his head toward the movement, then points hard to the side track. His relief vanishes into fresh alarm.

Sawyer Krump
Boffo, left side! They’re trying the hedge!
“He shoots at the first orc head that pokes up.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo’s shot flashes through the hedge gap and catches the first raised orc head. The shape drops out of sight with a bark of pain, and the flanking rush breaks in confusion.
The orc in the ditch jerks back from the bloodied shrubbery, while the one by the alder trunks stumbles sideways, suddenly exposed to the lane.

Sawyer Krump
That’s one! Keep them off the fence!
From deeper in the wood, answering shouts swell again, sharper now, as if the raiders hear their flank fail and hurry the rest forward.
Sawyer plants himself at the lane edge, pointing one hand toward Greenfields and the other toward the hedge, trying to split his attention between warning the village and tracking the breach.
The fence gap still chokes the center, but the left side is no longer hidden. The orcs have lost their cover, and the next rush is about to come from the open.
“He fires at the exposed orcs on the left.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo looses again through the broken hedge line, and the arrow snaps into the exposed cluster on the left. One raider folds at the ditch edge, while the one beside the alder trunks whirls away from the gap, suddenly thinking twice.

Sawyer Krump
Good! Press them back!
The left-side rush buckles. Bodies in the fence gap keep the center choked, but the flanking path is no longer a path, only trampled mud and a retreating shadow.
From the wood, the answering shouts chop closer, then scatter, as if the raiders there hear the break in their attack and hesitate at the edge of the trees.

Sawyer Krump
They’ve lost the hedge. Hold them there!
Sawyer plants himself at the lane mouth, one arm flung toward Greenfields, the other toward the ditch, as the village behind him stirs under open shutters and awake faces.
The fence line holds for the instant, but the orc advance is now pinned in the open, with the next move forced on them or the village.
“He fires at any available target.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Boffo draws, breathes once, and sends another shaft through the broken hedge line. The arrow drives a raider back into the mud, and the gap stays pinned under sudden fear.

Sawyer Krump
That’s it, keep them down!
The orcs at the treeline waver as if the road itself has bitten them. One stumbles over the fallen, another drags his shield up too late, and the open lane becomes a narrow throat they dare not rush.

Boffo Hardbottle
The fence gap is holding.
Sawyer wheels toward Greenfields and shouts for the doors to stay barred, but he does not abandon the line. Behind him, pale faces vanish from the shutters as the village answers the alarm.

Sawyer Krump
They are checked! Send no one out, not yet!
The raiders’ noise from the woods breaks apart, then falls back. At the fence, the assault is stalled hard enough to feel like a wall, and the first charge has spent itself.
“He waits for an orc to show himself.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Boffo goes still behind the rails, listening past the clang of his own breath. In the hush, the hedge line gives up one shape, then another, a helmet and a spear-tip edging into view.

Boffo Hardbottle
Two of them are still there.
He looses once, and the shot bites into the hedge beside the nearest raider, shaving bark and snapping him into the open. The miss costs him a shaft, and the orc curses loud enough to carry.

Sawyer Krump
There! Keep him showing!
The raider flinches back, half crouched and exposed, while the lane behind him stays clear. The arrow in the fence post trembles on, a bright warning in the trampled mud.
Farther in the woods, the answering shouts surge again, nearer now, and the first raider at the hedge turns his head toward them instead of the fence.
“He shoots the exposed orc.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Boffo steadies his breath and sends another shaft through the gap. The arrow takes the exposed raider in the throat, and the orc folds backward into the hedge, dropping spear and balance together. His shout cuts off at once.
The miss before has cost him a clean quiver line, and now blood splashes the broken rails. A second raider jerks away from the hedge, staring at the fallen one, while Sawyer flinches toward the village with fresh alarm.

Sawyer Krump
There, that is the gap. Hold them there, Boffo!
From deeper in the wood, the answering cries crash closer again, but the hedge line wavers. The dead raider slumps half inside the ditch, and the lane stays open behind him, for now.
Sawyer throws one arm toward Greenfields, then turns back to the fence, jaw tight. The arrow in the post still quivers, bright as a warning under the dark trees.
The remaining orc at the hedge lowers his spear and edges sideways, testing the opening. He does not charge yet. He waits for the next shot.
“He shoots at any available target, then swiftly reloads, expecting a charge.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo snaps a fresh arrow from his fingers to the string and draws in one smooth motion. The shaft hums through the gap and catches the spearman high in the chest, knocking him sideways into the ditch.
The orc's grip loosens. His spear skitters over the broken rails, and his boots thrash once before the hedge swallows him from view. The lane beyond the fence opens for a heartbeat.
Boffo is already moving. He reaches for another arrow, seats it against the bow, and lifts the weapon back to the slit between rail and hedge.

Sawyer Krump
Good. Keep them pinned, Boffo!
Sawyer plants himself at the lane mouth, one hand raised toward the dark cottages, the other braced on the fence. The arrow in the post trembles beside him like a little bright warning.
From the trees, the answering cries rise again, but the hedge line does not move forward. The raiders hesitate on the far side of the broken rails, and Greenfields holds for the moment.
“He waits for the orcs to appear.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Boffo goes still behind the rails, bow half-drawn, listening past Sawyer's breathing and the fence's creak. The woods answer with rough voices, then a gap, then the scrape of boots on leaf-mold.

Boffo Hardbottle
They are shifting, not charging.
A shape breaks from the hedge at last, low and quick, not yet over the broken line. The moment it exposes itself, Boffo tracks it cleanly through the gap.
The arrow flies. The raider jerks sideways, falls short of the fence, and tumbles back into the ditch before he can clamber over.

Sawyer Krump
There, by the ditch! Keep your eye on that gap!
Sawyer shifts to the lane corner, one arm out to hold the villagers back from the open street. Beyond him, cottage doors crack wider, then stop.
For a breath, the broken fence stands empty again, the arrow in the post trembling under the next rush of shouted voices from the trees.
“These guys don't know when to quit. He waits for targets.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo waits motionless, bowstring taut, while the ditch rustles again. The next raider lunges up from the weeds, and Boffo looses before the brute can plant a boot on the fence rail.
The arrow takes the raider in the chest and drives him backward. He topples into the gap, and the broken line fills with his falling weight, cutting the rush in half.

Sawyer Krump
That is it, Boffo! Hold them there!
Sawyer jerks the villagers farther from the lane, barking for shutters and bolts. A cottage door slams shut behind him, then another, and the open street narrows to a hard little corridor of fence, ditch, and fear.
From the trees, the shouting does not fade. It sharpens, then shifts, as if the raiders are crowding up behind the fallen body and reconsidering the breach.
For the moment, the fence line holds, jammed with a corpse and one trembling arrow in the post, but the woods beyond are still full of moving voices.
“Something must be impelling these orcs. Nothing in the village is worth this. Or are they after something in the mathom house? He risks a glance in that direction.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Boffo tilts his head and lets his gaze slip past the fence gap, toward the village lane.
Beyond the cottages, the mathom house roof sits dark and untouched. No torchlight gathers there, no raider breaks for it.

Boffo Hardbottle
Not the mathom house.
The orcs in the wood are not hunting treasure. Their shouts press hard on the fence, as if they mean to force a break and spill straight into Greenfields.

Sawyer Krump
Boffo, they are still coming. If they find a gap, they will be in the lane.
A new shout rises from the treeline, closer now, and the jammed body in the fence gap jolts as boots slam into it from the far side.
“He waits for targets to show themselves.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Boffo holds still behind the rails, watching the gap instead of the wood. He lets the raiders show themselves.
For a breath, nothing moves but the bodies jammed in the opening. Then an orc shoulder heaves into view, trying to climb over the corpse pile.

Boffo Hardbottle
There.
A second shape crowds up behind it, and the fence starts to give under their weight. The lane beyond stays clear, but the breach is opening wider.

Sawyer Krump
Now, Boffo! They are showing themselves!
The arrow in the fence post trembles as the gap groans under another shove, and the first orc's arm reaches through toward Greenfields.
“He shoots the orc in the arm, or whatever else may be visible.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo looses cleanly through the gap. The shaft takes the visible arm and drives the orc’s grip wide, so the clawing hand snaps back from Greenfields.
The raider reels off the corpse pile, shouting as it drops out of sight behind the fence line. The jam in the breach shifts with the impact, but it does not break.

Sawyer Krump
Good shot! Keep them from climbing!
For a heartbeat, the opening is held by bodies, broken rails, and Boffo’s arrow jutting from the struggle. Beyond the treeline, fresh voices still answer the raid.
Sawyer plants himself at the lane corner and starts waving the villagers back from the windows. The first attacker is down from the fence, but more press at the wood.
The breach stays clogged, yet the pressure on it does not ease. Another shove runs through the fence, and the fence post with the trembling arrow creaks under strain.
“These orcs had better give it up soon, or the sun will blind them all. He fires at any visible target.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Boffo sends another shaft through the jostling gap. It bites the foremost raider low, and the orc lurches backward into its own fellows, losing the climb.
The pressure at the breach breaks for a breath, then surges the other way as bodies stumble and the fence rails shudder. The arrow in the post quivers, but still holds.

Sawyer Krump
That’s it, Boffo! Keep them off the rails!
One raider slams a hand against the woven fence and slips down in the mud, snarling from the far side. The lane opens for a heartbeat, but no orc gets through.

Sawyer Krump
Villagers, back from the windows, stay down!
From the treeline, fresh shouts answer the failed rush, then hesitate against the fallen pile. Greenfields holds, for now, while the next push gathers out in the dark.
“Am I fighting a whole goblin army, he wonders, I don't think Bullroarer killed so many. He waits for another orc to become visible.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Boffo lowers his breathing and waits. The lane noise narrows to wind, shuddering rails, and the wet snarl of orcs beyond the fence. One of them shifts in the churned mud, and Boffo catches the movement before the figure fully rises.

Boffo Hardbottle
Another one is showing itself.
He settles the bow against the broken rail, keeping still as the gap opens for an instant. Sawyer snaps his head toward the treeline, listening hard for the next rush, while the fence post trembles under the quivering arrow.

Sawyer Krump
There, Boffo. Take the first one you can see!
A raider edges into view between the slats, half-hidden by the fallen bodies at the breach. Its shoulder and snarling face clear the fence line, and the whole front rank bunches behind it, hesitating in the mud.
Greenfields holds for this breath, but the gap is live again, and the next orc is now plain to Boffo's eye.
“He shoots it.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo looses. The arrow threads the gap and buries itself in the raider’s throat, cutting the snarl short.
The orc pitches backward into the pile at the breach, and the front rank jolts as one, their shove breaking against the sudden fall.

Sawyer Krump
Yes. Keep them there, Boffo!
A second raider flinches into the open, then checks itself as the bodies at the fence shift and settle under the blow.
Sawyer lunges to the lane edge and starts bellowing toward the cottages, his voice carrying over the shuddering rails.
For the first time since the treeline stirred, the orc push loses its rhythm, and Greenfields has a breath to close ranks.
“He fires again.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo hardens his stance and looses again. The shot snaps through the gap and catches a raider in the shoulder, driving him sideways into the fence rails.
The battered line of orcs stutters. One drops to a knee, another throws up an arm, and the press at the breach breaks just long enough for the bodies to hold.

Sawyer Krump
That is it, Boffo! Keep them off the lane!
Sawyer wheels back toward the cottages, still shouting, and the first shutters begin to slam as Greenfields wakes in earnest.
Beyond the fence, more shadows heave in the treeline, but the raiders at the gap cannot force through the choking pile.
For a moment, the village edge holds. The arrow in the post trembles above the breach as the next rush gathers itself in the dark.
“That is enough for now. The rest of the battle will have to wait.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +2)

Boffo lowers his bow and eases back from the broken rail. The fence gap still coughs with movement, but the line no longer needs his hand on the string.

Boffo Hardbottle
The gap is held for the moment.
Across the lane, Sawyer stops short of the cottages and glances over his shoulder. The first shutters are down, and the village is finally waking as one.

Sawyer Krump
Keep that bow ready, Boffo. If they surge again, we make them pay for every step.
Boffo has a brief stillness to count the bodies at the breach, the arrow in the fence post, and the dark line of trees beyond. The raiders beyond the treeline are shouting to one another, but they do not yet break through.
For now, Greenfields stands shut and bristling, with Sawyer at the lane and Boffo just behind the barricade, both waiting for the next move.
“Boffo reaches for another arrow, but the quiver is empty. He gathers all the arrows he can find, as quickly as possible.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -2)

Boffo crouches by the broken rail and plucks arrows free from the grass, the fence slats, and the bodies jammed in the gap. One shaft snaps under his fingers, but the rest go into a tidy bundle against his palm.

Boffo Hardbottle
The quiver was almost empty.
He finds enough to matter, but the last one comes out smeared and bent, its head nicked against stone. A sharp cry from the treeline makes his hand jerk, and the damaged shaft drops into the lane mud.

Sawyer Krump
Good. Keep them coming. I hear more of them in the wood.
Sawyer stops at the cottage corner, turns back with alarm in his face, and points toward the fence gap where the bodies keep the breach shut. The arrow in the post still trembles in the wind.
Boffo straightens with the recovered arrows in hand, just as a fresh shout rises from the dark trees. Greenfields stays shut for the moment, but the next rush is already gathering.
“He picks a hidden spot with a good view and readies his bow.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo slips from the broken rail into the shadow of the hedge, where the lane dips and the cottage wall hides him from the treeline. He plants his boots in the mud, squares his shoulders, and raises the bow to test the angle.

Boffo Hardbottle
The post still gives me a mark.
He fits an arrow to the string and settles behind the hedge, where the fence gap stays just in view through a slit of leaves. From here, the shattered rails, the arrow in the post, and the lane all line up in one narrow lane of fire.
Sawyer halts at the cottage corner and stares back toward Boffo's new perch, the alarm on his face giving way to grim relief. Beyond him, windows creak open and then shut again as the village listens for the next rush.

Sawyer Krump
There, keep that angle. If they break through, cut them down before they reach the doors.
A harsh volley answers from the wood, thudding into the fence and lane mud. Boffo stays tucked in the hedge, bow drawn, hidden and ready while the raiders close on Greenfields.
“They're shooting blind. That means they're scared, and they probably imagine that there is more than one scared hobbit shooting at them. He tosses a stone into the hedges some distance away to create a distraction and waits.”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -3)

Boffo flicks a stone into the hedges off to one side. It skitters hard through wet leaves, and the nearest arrows snap away toward the sound.
He goes still in the green shadow, bow lowered by a finger's breadth. The fence line holds for a breath, and the lane falls strangely quiet.
Then boots crunch in the mud beyond the gap. One raider lurches out from the treeline, staring toward the hedge with his weapon half-raised.

Sawyer Krump
Now, Boffo. They've taken the bait.
The diversion costs him, too. A ragged shaft bites into the hedge near his shoulder and tears his sleeve, close enough to sting without finding flesh.
At the fence post, the old arrow still trembles while the raider group bunches and turns, hunting for the second bowman they fear is there.
“He shoots the stupid orc who has exposed himself.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Boffo shifts the bow by a whisper and looses at the raider in the open. The shaft takes him cleanly, and he jerks back into the mud with a strangled cry.
The orc’s weapon flies from his grip and skids under the fence rail. His fellows flinch, crowding away from the gap they meant to force.

Sawyer Krump
Good. Keep them there, Boffo!
At the lane mouth, Sawyer wheels and hammers his fist against a cottage door, shouting for more hands. Lanterns flare behind shutters all along Greenfields.
The raiders do not rush. They pull back a step, snarling at the fallen one, while the arrow in the fence post still shivers in the night air.
For a breath, the village holds, the hedge and fence between home and ruin, and the next move hangs on the dark treeline.
“Sounds like Sawyer is calling for reinforcements. Things could get bloody very fast if the orcs see them. He throws another stone, this time farther away, into the bushes. Let the orcs worry about being outflanked.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Boffo flicks a stone into the black bushes beyond the lane. It vanishes with a dry crackle of leaves, and every orc head snaps that way at once.

Sawyer Krump
There, in the hedge! Another flank!
The raiders bunch and pivot, dragging the fight away from the fence gap. Their nearest spear thrusts at empty dark, while the dead one in the mud lies between them and the rail.
Sawyer barrels back from the cottage door, waving both arms toward the waking village. Lantern light hardens in the windows as men and women gather behind the shutters.
From deeper in the wood, the answering shouts grow louder, but now the orcs hesitate. They stare into the bushes, unsure whether they are being cut off or hunted.

Boffo Hardbottle
The bush line takes them.
For the moment, the fence holds, the raiders stalled in a wavering knot at the edge of Greenfields, while the treeline threatens to spill more of them into the lane.
“The orcs must be wondering now what is going on. In order to scare them, he yells loudly, "We've got them now! Bring up the second company!"”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Boffo throws his voice over the lane, hard and sharp as a horn blast. "We've got them now! Bring up the second company!"
The nearest orcs jerk upright. One falters and backs into the fence, and another twists toward the wood, eyes wide at the cry.
Sawyer freezes for a breath, then snatches the alarm back up with both hands and bellows toward the cottages, his face gone pale under the lantern glow.
From the treeline, the answering shouts stop being distant. They turn, as if the hidden band has heard the lie and is testing whether it is true.
Boffo's shout costs him dearly, his throat stinging raw from the force of it. The lane goes dead quiet for one heartbeat, then every raider starts looking for the second company that is not yet there.
The fence line holds, but the orcs give ground in a wavering clutch, no longer charging, only staring and listening for the next sound from the wood.
“Boffo takes aim at an orc who is quite far away, on the edge of the forest, hoping to convince the orcs that they are being attacked from that direction.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Boffo settles his breath, draws on the farthest shadow at the treeline, and looses. The arrow snaps out low and true, vanishing into the dark edge of the woods.
An orc at the fringe jerks hard, spun off balance, and throws both arms wide. The whole line flinches toward the woods, suddenly sure danger is coming from behind them.
Sawyer stops mid-bellow, then whips around with a savage nod, catching the lie and driving it home with the alarm horn.

Sawyer Krump
There, see it? From the wood! Hold fast, all of you, hold fast!
The raiders hesitate, packed tight at the fence line, listening into the trees instead of the lane. Their advance breaks for the first time.
Beyond them, the village shutters stay barred and bright with lantern light, while the arrow in the fence post quivers in the cold night air.
“He shoots another orc on the flank.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Boffo shifts his stance behind the hedge, draws once more, and picks out the flank of the nearest raider.
The arrow flies through the fence gap and punches into the orc’s side. He folds with a snarl, twisting into his own company and forcing them to scatter.
One more raider lurches backward to avoid the fall, and the whole knot of them breaks from the lane, their attention yanked hard toward the dark of the wood.
Sawyer lifts the horn again, then points with it toward the trees, catching the movement before it can settle. His shout carries over the fence, sharp as a command.

Sawyer Krump
There, there, keep them turned! They are wavering!
In the raiders’ confusion, Boffo catches a clear glimpse of the deeper treeline, and the warning shapes beyond it seem to thin. The fence line holds, and the lane stays shut.
“"They're running! Don't let them get away!"”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Boffo hardens his aim and looses again at the retreating raiders.
The arrow catches the nearest orc at the hip, and he spills sideways into the lane mud, dragging two others off their feet.
The break in their line widens at once, and the rest of the band bunches up in panic at the treeline, no longer sure whether to run or charge.
For a heartbeat, the gap in the fence stands empty except for the quivering shaft already buried in the post beside it.

Sawyer Krump
That is it, keep them turning! They will not get through this way!
Behind the wavering raiders, Boffo spots a second cluster of shapes deeper in the wood, and their line has slowed to a crawl under the shock of the shot.
“He shoots the nearest orc, yelling, "After them! Don't let them get away!"”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Boffo Hardbottle
After them! Don’t let them get away!
Boffo looses at the nearest fleeing orc, and the shaft drives him down hard into the lane. The cry that follows is not a challenge, but a break in him.
The raiders at the treeline flinch and wheel on themselves, hooves and boots tangling as they lose the nerve to press the gap.

Sawyer Krump
There, by the fence, they are buckling! Hold them to it, Boffo!
Beyond the wavering front, a hidden knot of larger shapes stirs in the wood, then starts backing away with the others, their line finally giving ground.
Sawyer blows again, and for the first time the sound reads as triumph instead of alarm. The arrow still quivers in the post beside the gap, untouched.
From the trees comes only the retreating rustle of boots and the distant shouting of the raiders as Greenfields’ lane stays shut behind the broken fence.
“He shoots another, this time on the other flank, to confuse them and make them wonder where the arrows are coming from.”
SUCCESS (Great Ranged Weapons, rolled -3)

Boffo shifts his aim to the other flank and lets fly. The arrow slips through the dusk and catches a retreating raider high in the shoulder, turning him sideways into the others.
The line breaks into a more confused scramble. Orcs jostle and glare at the trees, unsure whether the shot comes from the hedge, the lane, or deeper in the wood.

Sawyer Krump
Ha! That is it, Boffo. Keep them guessing!
Boffo’s bowstring bites his fingers as he draws again, and the jolt leaves a sting in his hand. One arrow lighter, he keeps the raiders off balance.
Sawyer plants himself at the lane mouth, horn lowered now, watching the treeline for the next rush. The arrow in the fence post still shivers beside the gap.
From the woods, the raiders’ shouting thins into uncertainty instead of command. Greenfields holds, for the moment, behind broken rails and wavering fear.
