The Palace Copyist

The captured couriers remain bound among overturned dye vats. Veyra guards the rear passage while the masked clerk opens the seized packets beneath a hooded lantern.

This wax bears the palace receiving mark, but only half the impression. The missing edge matches the forged order.

A false-bottomed packet clicks open. Inside lies a concealed compartment holding a young palace copyist, a slight woman with ink-stained fingers, gray eyes, and a torn blue clerk’s coat.

The Palace Copyist

The Palace Copyist

Please, I copied what they brought me. I never knew the seal was stolen. Do not send me back.

Veyra

Veyra

She is breathing too fast. Interrogate her carelessly, and fear will kill the evidence before any blade does.

The Masked Clerk

The Masked Clerk

Magical scrutiny could be worse. Her memory may be threaded with a compulsion, or the patron may have marked her as he marked the elf witness.

Pell Vey shifts against his bindings, while Ardan Sile watches the copyist with rigid silence. The matching wax, living witness, and hidden compartment now expose a manufactured chain of authority, but its maker remains beyond reach.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify the maker of the manufactured chain of authority

“"I am arresting all of you for being involved in all of this and until the main person responsible for this is found. You will not have any freedom." I examine the marker to find out who the true chain of authority is.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +2)

Doku Nohara

Doku Nohara

You are all under arrest for involvement in this conspiracy. None of you will have freedom until the one responsible is found.

The declaration settles over the dye warehouse. Veyra lowers her weapon but keeps the rear passage sealed; the masked clerk stops turning pages, and the bound couriers go still.

Pell Vey

Pell Vey

You cannot imprison every witness and courier in the city. The palace will demand to know who authorized this seizure.

Veyra

Veyra

Then let the palace ask. Until the chain is proven clean, nobody leaves this warehouse.

Doku takes the half-impressed wax marker from the packets and studies its broken edge, beadwork, and surviving palace receiving lines beside the forged order.

Her examination separates the authority chain: Vaust commissioned the vessel, Ardan and Pell carried his instructions, Magistrate Corven routed them, and a palace receiving clerk forged final approval using a borrowed seal.

The mark names no lawful issuer. It proves the palace seal was appended after the private chain had already moved the vessel.

Doku orders the bound couriers and palace copyist transferred beneath the Nohara refuge. Veyra escorts them through warded corridors while the masked clerk carries the seized packets.

Her personal prisons are quiet stone cells marked with medical seals, each furnished for restraint, observation, and survival. The prisoners are separated before questioning begins.

Doku opens the Locked Poison Tray and selects measured compounds, pairing each with an antidote and a written dose record. Her legendary craft keeps the interrogation controlled rather than lethal.

Pell Vey

Vaust paid us through Magistrate Corven. The palace seal was borrowed from a receiving clerk named Hadrik Pell, but Corven arranged the access.

Under the poison’s influence, Pell reveals the next transfer: payment records and a duplicate signet were stored at Vaust’s winter manor beyond the eastern vineyards.

Ardan Sile

The manor has a cellar archive. Corven keeps the route books there when Vaust is away. A steward named Meret carries the keys.

Hadrik brought me the borrowed seal. I copied the approval because Corven threatened my family. The original receiving ledger is hidden beneath the chapel floor.

Secure the palace copyist’s cooperation

Doku Nohara

We have a target. Take these interlopers away. I will handle Corven, Hadrik, Vaust, and Meret.

Doku’s order cuts through the dye warehouse with practiced authority. The medical seals on the prisoners’ cells answer her command, glowing once along the corridor stones.

Veyra

Done. Pell, Ardan, and the copyist will be separated, guarded, and delivered to the refuge without anyone touching the evidence.

Veyra binds the couriers’ route ledger and packets into a sealed evidence satchel, then leads the prisoners away through the warded passage. The copyist goes under escort, breathing easier.

The Masked Clerk

I will preserve every statement and mark each chain of custody. Corven’s name, Hadrik’s borrowed seal, and the manor’s records now stand together.

The warehouse empties of its captives. On the worktable, the winter manor route, chapel ledger, cellar archive, and Meret’s keys form a precise trail toward Vaust’s remaining protection.

Then go, Lady Nohara. We will keep your witnesses alive and your evidence sealed while you cut out the hand behind them.

“I go to personally handle these interlopers by using sleeping gas to capture these people and my needle-firing rapier parasol with sleeping poisons. I do this stealthily.”

Doku leaves the refuge alone and reaches Vaust’s winter manor beneath vineyard fog. She finds a servant’s side entrance unbarred, then slips inside without disturbing its ward-chimes.

In the cellar archive, Lord Vaust, his gaunt build, pale skin, and narrow lined face visible,, an elderly man with silver hair and a dark velvet coat, studies ledgers beside Magistrate Corven, a broad middle-aged man in red court robes. Hadrik Pell, a nervous young man in blue clerk’s garb, guards the door, while Meret, an older elf woman with braided white hair, sorts keys.

Doku retrieves a sleeping vial from her Locked Poison Tray and fits it to the parasol’s concealed mechanism. She releases the vapor through the cellar grating, letting it drift across the archive.

Corven reaches for a bell, but the sleeping compound takes hold first. Vaust sags over the ledger, Hadrik folds against the wall, and Meret lowers the keys without a sound.

Doku enters through the silent doorway and fires measured needles into each conspirator’s outer clothing, reinforcing the dose without injury. All four fall unconscious, breathing steadily.

The cellar archive and its conspirators are secured.

She binds Vaust, Corven, Hadrik, and Meret, seals the ledgers and duplicate signet, then marks the manor for Nohara custody. The patron, intermediaries, and evidence are captured together.
