The chamber falls into a hush so deep Harry feels it in his teeth. Water laps softly at the threshold behind them, but here the air is still, cold, and nearly dry.

Kaelith remains by the opened steps, one hand resting on his blade, the other loose at his side. He studies Harry with that same unreadable look, as if weighing what to say and what to keep buried.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

The basin is quiet now. So is the stone.

Kaelith

Kaelith

You hold yourself well for someone who keeps stumbling into sealed graves.

His tone is dry, but the edge has gone out of it. He glances toward the black water basin, then back to Harry, as though the chamber itself has reminded him of something old.

Kaelith

Kaelith

This place is older than the markings on its walls. Older than the oath that woke it.

He shifts his weight, easing the strain from his wounded arm, and finally lets his guard settle a fraction.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If you want the truth of it, ask. I am done pretending the crypt will speak for me.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn what Kaelith knows about the oath and warning

I use persuasion, that and I have done my best to look out for him as we adventures together. Given weight and respect to his words and bandaging his wounds.

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled -1)

Harry lets the silence sit for a breath, then answers with the patience of someone who has already shared the worst of the dark with him. He keeps his hands open, his spellbook lowered, and gives Kaelith the weight of his attention.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

I have done my best to look out for you, Kaelith, and I am asking for the truth now.

Kaelith’s jaw tightens at that, then loosens. He looks at the bandage on his arm, as if the cloth itself has earned a say in the matter.

Kaelith

Kaelith

You have. More than most would have.

Kaelith

Kaelith

The oath below is a lock, not a prayer. It binds the gate, and it binds whoever wakes it to remember the warning that made the lock necessary.

He lifts his gaze to the black basin, then back to Harry, the guarded look thinning into something more open, if no less tired.

Kaelith

Kaelith

What I know is this, the grave was made to hold knowledge that should not walk free. Your name is the key, and the warning was carved into the bargain before either of us came here.

Quest Complete

Learn what Kaelith knows about the oath and warning

So then, if my name is the key, then I have to learn the knowledge to keep it bound?

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 66)

Kaelith shakes his head slowly, the movement heavy with the weight of his long vigil. He does not offer a path of mastery, but rather a grim correction to the assumption of control.

Kaelith

Kaelith

It is not a matter of learning to hold it, Harry. The key does not grant you command over the lock, it only ensures that you are the one who must remain here to suffer the weight of its silence.

There must be another way! My life is About the pursuit of knowledge! Is there Another way?

NO (Unlikely, rolled 75)

The silence in the chamber deepens, the cold air refusing to offer any alternative to the grim truth Kaelith has laid bare. No hidden path or secret lore reveals itself to Harry, leaving only the stark reality of the burden he has inherited.

So, then I will gain this truth, become the lock and leave. If I ever perish then the lock is broken?

NO (Likely, rolled 91)

Kaelith

Kaelith

Death does not grant you release, Harry. The oath is woven into the soul, not the flesh, and the lock remains bound to your essence long after your heart stops beating.

"Well, you sell the idea so well! There must be plenty who jump at the chance!" I say sarcastically!

Well, you sell it so well. Must be plenty who jump at the chance.

Kaelith

Kaelith

A few did, once. Most learned too late that guarding silence is a lonely kind of duty.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He lets the barb land, then answers it plainly. Good. He is still listening.

Kaelith’s mouth shifts in the dark, not quite a smile. The basin’s dead sheen glints between them, and the answer hangs in the cold air.

Kaelith

Kaelith

The oath does not forgive weakness, but it does not ask for perfection either. Only vigilance. Only consent.

He lifts a hand toward the dim wall, where the last rune light has gone out, and the gesture seems to include the whole buried place. Harry’s quip lands, but the strain of speaking it costs him a breath, and the chamber’s chill bites harder after it.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If you want the truth of it, I stayed because no one else would carry the silence without turning it into a weapon. That was my mistake, once.

"I will take the oath, but can I seal this room and leave once it is done and continue my adventure?"

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 69)

The heavy silence of the crypt presses in, and the air grows stagnant as the oath's weight settles into the stone itself. Harry's hope for a quick departure withers as the masonry groans, the walls locking into a permanent, unyielding seal that bars any exit.

"Oh....wait....Kaelith? Now two people know....only one is supposed to know...that's how this goes?" I ask sadly

FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -4)

Harry Blackstone

Oh... wait. Kaelith? Now two people know. Only one is supposed to know, that is how this goes?

His words hang in the dark. The basin gives a thin, cold glimmer, and the dust keeps falling like sifted ash.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Two minds on the same secret is danger, yes, but silence has already failed here.

Kaelith

Kaelith

That is how many vows begin to crack, Harry Blackstone. Or how they become shared burdens. It depends on who carries the weight.

Kaelith shifts his stance beside the black water basin, easing one hand from his shield. The faint light picks out the seam of old stone where the archway has fused shut.

Kaelith

Kaelith

I know the oath was meant for one keeper. I also know it has already taken more than one life to protect.

He studies Harry in the dark, no longer guarded with steel first, but with something quieter, almost searching. The chamber stays sealed, waiting on Harry's answer.

Does it expect me to die?

NO (Likely, rolled 89)

The silence stretches, heavy and thick, but the air does not grow colder. Kaelith shakes his head slowly, his gaze steady and devoid of any expectation of sacrifice.

Kaelith

Kaelith

It does not ask for your life, Harry. It asks for your vigilance. The gate is a lock, not a grave.

I turn and jump into the cistern where the point of light is and cast feather fall on myself

Harry turns from Kaelith and dives for the cistern. The blue glow below catches his boots, then the chamber drops away beneath him.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

The light is inside the water.

His spell snaps into place midair. Feather fall thins the plunge to a drift, and he descends with his cloak and messenger bag floating up around him.

The basin swallows him without a splash. Cold water closes over his shoulders, and the soft blue point gleams ahead through the murk.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Harry! Do not stray too far. The masonry is still listening.

Behind him, Kaelith shifts to the edge of the cistern, tense but no longer reaching for his shield. The gap in the crypt wall holds, and the seal does not crack.

Harry reaches the light, and the glow steadies around his hand. The basin's surface ripples outward, as if something beneath it has recognized the spell.

I follow through to the light and grasp it in my hand and hold it to my chest

The glow answers his touch. Harry closes his fingers around it, and the blue light gathers into something solid, cool, and weightless in his palm.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

It is not a flame. It is bound.

He draws the light to his chest. The basin gives a low shiver, and the ripples flatten as if they have found their mark.

Kaelith

Kaelith

By the old wards... it accepts you.

The chamber answers at once. A thin line of blue runs through the stonework, tracing a path from the cistern toward a sealed seam in the far wall.

Kaelith

Kaelith

There. The way is open, for now. Do not let it fade.

Kaelith straightens at the rim, his hope sharpened by caution, while the hidden seam holds in the stone and waits on Harry's next move.

Harry raises the captured light, and the seam answers. Thin stone hairlines part with a dry sigh, revealing a narrow passage stitched with older blue wards beneath the newer ones.

He braces the multi-tool against the edge and works it free with careful pressure. The runes brighten instead of flaring, as if the blade of light is teaching the masonry to yield.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

Come on, Kaelith. It is open.

Harry swings one leg onto the ledge and climbs through first, the cold stone taking the blue glow with him. Behind him, the cistern hushes, waiting.

Kaelith

Kaelith

By the warding... you made it listen.

Kaelith steps to the seam and pauses, hand hovering over the lit stone like a man approaching an altar. His guarded hope hardens into something more careful, more personal.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If this path opens for you, then the chamber was never meant to hold only silence.

The blue traces hold steady in the wall between them, and the basin below stays quiet. For a moment, neither man moves first.

Harry lets the blue light steady in his palm and walks into the warded passage as if it belongs to him. The stone answers with a faint, obedient glow, and the air feels less like a tunnel than a held breath.

Harry Blackstone

Harry Blackstone

Come on, Kaelith. It is safe enough to step with me.

Kaelith studies Harry for one beat longer, then lowers his hand from the seam and follows. His shoulders ease as he crosses the threshold, drawn by Harry's confidence as much as the light.

Kaelith

Kaelith

You carry it well. Better than I did, when I first learned the wards answered to will.

The passage narrows around them, blue runes pulsing softly along the walls, while the basin behind them stays quiet and far away.

Kaelith

Kaelith

There was a time I thought obedience was the same as understanding. It cost me more than pride.

Harry Blackstone

The wards are keyed to intention, not just shape.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If you are to keep this place, Harry Blackstone, then you should know what I buried here, and why I never spoke of it aloud.
