Adventure of Harry Blackstone 1

Harry Blackstone and Kaelith crash through rotten stone and plunge into black water. The tunnel above groans shut behind them, violet light strobing through the collapse.

They surface in a vast flooded chamber. Bone-white shelves line the walls, packed with the ribs and skulls of long-dead scholars, and a massive gate sleeps under the water at the far end.

Necrotic threads coil through the water like ink in a current, pulling toward the gate. The spellbook's glow jerks hard in Harry's hands, answering the pulse below.

A deep thrum rolls through the chamber. The gate shivers once, and a seam of pale light leaks between its submerged bars as the water rises around them.

The water around the gate is not merely stagnant, but aerated by the rhythmic, pulsing release of the seal itself. Harry realizes the current is being pushed outward, creating a pocket of breathable air trapped against the iron bars.

The rhythmic pulses of the gate align perfectly with the cadence of the distant chanting, revealing a harmonic resonance that Harry can exploit. By adjusting the frequency of his own spellbook's tether, he realizes he can invert the flow of the siphon, turning the chanters' own ritual energy into a binding force to lock the gate shut.

Harry steadies his breath and lets the jagged tether answer the hidden pulse below. The harsh light on the water tightens into a clean pattern, and the gate’s rhythm falters.

The chanting beyond the crypt stutters, then cuts off as if a mouth has been sealed. The gate’s breathing slows, its glow folding inward along the bars.

A ring of light clamps down through the flooded air and bites into the gate’s frame. Stone groans in answer, but the pattern locks, rigid and exact.

The black water basin goes still at last. The thread from Harry’s spellbook shines like a nailed cord, and the submerged gate is bound shut.

Harry and Kaelith kick upward together, riding the chamber’s pull instead of fighting it. The rising water lifts them through the broken seam in the ceiling, where shattered stone and cold foam choke the gap.

Harry keeps the spellbook above the surface as he angles his body through first, using the surge to carry him clear. Kaelith follows close behind, shield scraping ruin as he slips into the breach.

They break into the upper passage in a burst of spray. Below them, the crypt groans, and the dark basin’s pulse still throbs through the stone.

The water slams up after them, then loses its grip at the lip of the gap. For the moment, the flood stays behind, hissing through the fracture instead of swallowing them.

Ahead, a narrow ledge slopes toward a higher chamber, and the passage trembles with every heartbeat from below.

Harry plants his hand against the wet stone and speaks a word that tastes of clay and iron. The crack answering the flood knits itself shut, rough seams of earth locking into the broken masonry.

Water hammers the new seal, but the surge loses force at once. Foam slaps the ledge instead of pouring over it, and the passage’s trembling eases to a lower shudder.

A deeper groan rolls up from below, muffled now, as if the crypt itself has been made to swallow its own breath. The black pulse in the stone dulls behind the fresh plug of earth.

Kaelith lowers his shield a fraction and looks from the seal to the higher passage, calculating the distance like a man measuring a bridge under strain.

Harry tears cloth from a spare wrap and works fast, pressing it to the worst cuts before they can reopen. The dark water has left grit and rust-colored stains on both men, but the bleeding is shallow enough to answer to firm hands.

Kaelith shifts his shoulder under Harry’s grip, then offers his forearm without comment. The bandage bites tight, clean and serviceable, though Harry has to use the last of his clean strip to finish the knot.

A fresh tremor shivers through the passage, not violent, but enough to send dust sifting from the patched seam. The new masonry holds.

He takes one quick look past Harry toward the higher chamber, then steps off the ledge first, making the choice plain.

Harry follows Kaelith at once, keeping his shoulders tight and his breath even as the passage narrows. The stone overhead gives a final dry shiver, then settles behind them.

They crest the last rise and step into the higher chamber together. The air changes first, colder and older, with a wet mineral sting.

Below them, the shallow wash slaps the floor in uneasy little waves. Ahead, the chamber opens around the black water basin, its surface no longer boiling, but still restless.

Harry reaches the chamber edge beside him, and the path in is clear at last, though the wet stone steals a bit of his footing as he comes up short.

Harry plants his boots with a runner's instinct, weight low and centered. The wet stone tries to slide out from under him, but he catches it cleanly and settles without a stumble.

The chamber answers at once. Water shivers across the floor in a thin sheet, then steadies, as if the room notices he is not going down.

Harry's balance holds while the basin below gives a slow, dark pulse. The threshold no longer feels like a trap for his feet, only a ledge he can trust.

Ahead, the far stonework groans. A seam in the masonry opens with a wet scrape, and a narrow path of exposed steps starts to show where the flood had hidden it.

The rising water begins to gather behind them, licking at the threshold. Harry is steady on his feet, and the only way left is forward into the opening path.
