Months pass in the hush of the forest. Stone by stone, the shrine rises again beneath Mageirith's steady hands and the Knight's patient labor.

He fits a fresh block into place, then steps back, dust on his cheeks, studying the seam like it is a vow made visible.

Valerius

Valerius

It holds. Hard to believe that once, I thought this place was lost for good.

Mageirith

Mageirith

The altar glow has settled into the walls, warm as breath.

Mageirith wipes mortar from her fingers. The repaired shrine stands whole around them, rough rubble sorted into neat stacks for the next day's work.

Valerius

Valerius

When the last stone is set, I think I will remember this more than the burning. Not all of it, but enough.

He looks toward Mageirith, tired, calm, and waiting. The forest answers only with leaves and distant birds, leaving the moment open and gentle.

✓ Quest Accepted

Ask the knight whether their connection can survive beyond the shrine

"Once this shrine is completed I can restore your youthful self if you so wish."

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +1)

The last stone settles with a dry click, and the shrine goes still. For a heartbeat, even the birds seem to listen.

Mageirith

Mageirith

Mageirith lets the silence stand, then offers the blessing she promised, a careful warmth of arcana and mercy.

Light gathers around the Knight, not burning, only reshaping, as the work of months answers her spell.

Valerius

Valerius

His breath catches. The ache of age loosens from his frame all at once.

When the glow fades, he stands changed, younger in face and posture, the same man and yet newly unburdened.

Valerius

Valerius

I did not think mercy would ever feel like this.

He looks from his own hands to Mageirith, then to the restored shrine, as if measuring which belonging is newer.

Valerius

Valerius

If I leave this place now, will I still know how to stand beside you?

I step closer and take his hand "My duties are to this shrine." I remove my necklace. "Here, if you ever need me just kiss the pendant and I will answer."

Mageirith steps in and closes her fingers around his. The restored altar glows between them, and the shrine feels suddenly larger than the work it held.

Mageirith

Mageirith

My duties are to this shrine.

She removes the necklace and sets the pendant in his palm, the last of her spellfire fading from the chain.

Mageirith

Mageirith

If you ever need me, kiss the pendant, and I will answer.

Valerius

Valerius

So this place is not the whole of it. This is a promise I can carry.

Valerius

Valerius

Then I will keep it close. And if you leave, I think I will still look for the road that leads back to you.

The words hang in the warm air. For the first time, the shrine is quiet because it is finished, not because it is waiting.

Does he feel the weight of his guilt finally lifting from his shoulders?

The crushing weight that has haunted my every step for years... it is finally gone.

I have carried the ashes of those hamlets in my chest for so long, Mageirith. But standing here, with the altar whole and your grace beside me, I feel as though I can finally breathe again.

Valerius

Valerius

My name is Valerius. It has been a long time since I felt worthy of speaking it aloud.

I offer Valerius a path back without asking him to stay "my I join on your journey?"

The shrine settles into hush, warm light resting on the repaired stone. Mageirith lifts her bandaged palm a little, the old blood on the altar now only a faint, dark trace.

Mageirith

Mageirith

I can go with you, if you want. My path does not have to end here.

Valerius

He looks toward the doorway, then back to her, as if measuring the distance outside against the space between them.

Valerius

Then let me walk it with you. Not as penitent, not as a servant, just as Valerius.

His shoulders ease, but he does not move yet. The shrine holds them both in its calm, as if listening for the shape of the answer.

If we leave, I would know whether this bond was only for holy ground, or something stronger than it.
