The Knight

The knight stays kneeling by the broken altar, hands open now instead of clenched. Pale light slips across the cracked stone between him and Mageirith.

Valerius

Will you guide my hands, then? I want the rite done rightly, if mercy can still take root here.

Mageirith draws her symbol near the altar and studies the fracture lines, the dust, the old scorch marks softened by time.

Mageirith

Mageirith

The altar is older than the fire stains.

Valerius

Valerius

I know only duty, and I have failed even that. Tell me where to place my hands.

He leans closer, listening like a man at the edge of sleep. The shrine feels hushed, as if it is waiting with them. Mageirith has room, now, to begin, or to ask him the next question.

Forgiveness is earned through actions. Help me repair this temple shrine. It may give you peace to give back to the people you took so much from.

The Knight
The Knight

Mageirith lowers her hand toward the cracked seam, then guides the knight to mirror the motion. Dust shifts under his palms as he begins to clear the altar’s face, careful and deliberate.

Valerius

Valerius

Then let my hands do some small good here.

He lifts a fallen slab a finger’s breadth, grunting with the strain. A stone chip drops from the edge and taps against the floor, loud in the hush.

Mageirith

Mageirith

Keep the pressure there. I can set the binding stroke.

Mageirith traces the old fracture with her symbol, and the pale light gathers along the line like breath held in the shrine. The knight steadies the slab while she seals the hairline break with a soft flare of magic.

Valerius

Valerius

I thought penance would hurt more than this.

When they finish, he rests both hands on the altar and bows his head. His shoulders ease at last, but his face tightens with the honest weight of what remains unhealed.

Seeking Mercy at the Broken Altar
The Knight
The Knight

The knight lifts his head from the altar and turns toward Mageirith, dust still clinging to his hands. In the ruined quiet, the repaired seam gives off a faint, steady sheen.

Valerius

Valerius

Yes. I will help rebuild it.

Valerius

Valerius

If mercy can be worked by hand, then I can begin here.

He glances to the broken stones around them, then to the altar with a look of sober purpose. The offer lands in him as work, not penance.

Valerius

Valerius

This shrine should not stay broken while I still have strength.

Mageirith’s words are not heard, but the knight answers her question with a small, grateful nod, as if the answer itself eases him.

Valerius

Valerius

I chose this place because it was forgotten. That seemed fitting, for a man who had learned to call himself forgotten too.

His voice softens on the last word. The ruined shrine seems less like a wound now and more like a task shared between them, waiting for the next stone to be set.

The Knight
The Knight

Mageirith lowers her hands to the first loose stone, and the knight answers by setting his shoulder to the altar block. Together they lift and seat it, the repaired seam holding as dust slips from the join.

Mageirith

Mageirith

Let us begin.

Valerius

Valerius

Aye. Stone by stone, then.

He kneels again, not in prayer this time, but in labor. One cracked slab turns, then another, and the shrine starts to look less like ruin and more like a vow being kept.

Valerius

Valerius

If my hands can mend this place, perhaps they are not beyond use.

Mageirith passes him a shard of dressed stone. He takes it with both hands, and the edge scrapes her palm as the piece shifts.

The cut is small, but a bright bead of blood dots the pale dust. The knight sees it at once and still does not stop working.

Valerius

Valerius

You should not bleed for my shrine... yet I am grateful you are here.
