Broken stone arches claw at a bruised sky, ivy hanging thick over a ruined shrine. Mageirith steps into the hush and sees a retired knight kneeling before a shattered altar.
His calloused hands press together so hard they tremble. Ragged breaths catch in his chest as he mutters a plea for forgiveness.

Valerius
The words come broken, but the prophecy will not leave him alone.

Valerius
Forgive me... I feared the darkness, and still I helped it wake.
Mageirith draws near, her vestments brushing cold stone. The knight does not look up, lost in his ritual.

Valerius
If you have come from the heavens, tell me, did I doom us all?

“Speak softly to the knight, assuring him that redemption is possible.”
FAILURE (Poor Persuasion, rolled -2)

Mageirith
Redemption is not beyond you. It can still be sought.
Mageirith keeps her voice low, but the shrine seems to swallow the comfort before it reaches him.

Valerius
Seeked... by whom? The altar is broken, and my hands are not clean.
At the words, his shoulders tighten instead of easing. He bows harder over his clasped hands, as if sheltering from the answer.

Valerius
If mercy is real, then why does it feel so far away? I can still hear what I helped loose.

Mageirith
He is listening, but the doubt is still winning.
Mageirith’s plea lands without breaking him open. The knight stays kneeling, breath shuddering, caught between hope and ruin.
“I kneel beside the knight. Look at me, just by you being here I was reawoken. I am Mageirith oracle of this shrine. And angel to you thow I have fallen like many of my kind.”
SUCCESS (Poor Persuasion, rolled +2)

Mageirith lowers herself to one knee beside him, close enough that her shadow joins his over the broken stone. The shrine does not answer, but it no longer feels empty.

Mageirith
Look at me. By your side, I am here as Mageirith, oracle of this shrine. I have fallen as others of my kind have, yet I stand with you.
Her words settle into the ruin instead of vanishing. The knight’s clasped hands loosen a fraction, and his head turns toward her voice.

Valerius
Mageirith... then you know what it is to be stained and still be seen.
He breathes in, shuddering, and the rigid line of his shoulders breaks. One hand opens on his knee, no longer gripping himself like a penitent drowning in prayer.

Valerius
If you remain beside me, perhaps mercy is not a lie.
The heavy stillness shifts. He bows his head, but this time it is not in terror, only exhaustion, and the motion looks like relief finally finding room to enter.

“What you did is in the past. What you chose to do now will see you forgiven. You have committed atrocities yes. However, that doesnt make you evil, it make you human. Even Angels make mistakes, such as myself.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +2)

Mageirith lets the silence hold for a breath longer, then turns her fallen symbol in her palm so it catches the pale shrine light. Her voice stays gentle, but it lands with the weight of a vow. What is done remains behind you. What you choose now is what you will be answered by.
She lifts her gaze to him, steady and unflinching. The broken altar between them feels less like a wound now, more like a witness.

Valerius
Answered by... not condemned by?
The knight swallows hard. His shoulders stay bowed, but the panic in them eases, as if her words have found a crack in the armor of his guilt.

Valerius
I have done terrible things in fear. I keep calling that evil because it feels safer than asking forgiveness.

Mageirith
Even angels make mistakes.
At that, his head rises a little. The line of his mouth trembles, not with grief now, but with the effort of believing her.

Valerius
Then... if you can bear to name me fallen and still stand beside me, perhaps I can bear to look at myself again.

“So tell me, why come here? Of all the temples why mine own.?”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +0)

Mageirith
So tell me, why come here? Of all the temples, why mine own?
The knight looks down at the broken altar, then back to her symbol. His breath catches, and when he speaks, it is barely above the hush of the shrine.

Valerius
Because this place was supposed to forgive the unworthy. I thought if I knelt where mercy once listened, I might hear it for myself.
He gives a short, ragged laugh that breaks into a wince. One gloved hand presses to his chest as though the words cost him something real.

Valerius
Instead I found only my own voice accusing me back. I kept coming because I could not bear to admit I still hoped.

Mageirith
The shrine is not judging him, only echoing him.
A strip of pale light shifts through the cracked roof and lands between them. The knight’s shoulders loosen another fraction, and his eyes stay on Mageirith instead of the floor.

Valerius
If you will hear the rest of it, I will speak plainly. I need to say what I did, and what I fear I am still becoming.
“Then put voice to past actions. I am not here to judge you.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +1)

The knight draws a slow breath, as if accepting a weight he has carried too long. He lowers his gaze to the light between them, and the tremor in his hands eases.

Valerius
Then I will speak it plainly. I rode with men who burned the eastern hamlets, and I did not stop them.

Valerius
I told myself I was following orders. I told myself worse would have come without me. Those were lies I kept to stay upright.
His shoulders sag, but he does not fold in on himself. The confession leaves him shaken, yet more present, as if the shrine has finally heard a true name.

Valerius
When the darkness answered our work, I feared punishment more than the ruined lives. That fear has haunted every prayer since.

Mageirith
Your past is spoken now. Mercy is not denied because truth is finally spoken.

Valerius
...Then perhaps I may kneel without lying to the stones.
He closes his eyes, not in despair, but in weary relief. The air around the broken altar remains light, and he waits there, open, for what mercy might answer next.
