Smoke thins over the square. The council members step from the hall in a wary line, staring at the fallen bandits and the blood-dark stones.

Hostage
They kept us in the hall, then used the cellar. There were more ways through than we knew.
The Town Guard squares his shoulders beside the hostage, still shielding him. Grachus stands at the center, both longswords ready, while the village’s fear shifts into hard, cautious attention.

The Council Elder
How many were there, and where did they come from?

Elara
They moved hostages by hidden passages. If the bandits had held longer, they could have spread through the whole village.

The Stranger
The hall is the next problem. Clear this square, and the village can breathe again.
The nearest elder gives a tight nod, then turns toward the hall door. The bandit threat is broken, but the council now has to secure the village and seal the routes the raiders used.

Secure the village
✓ Quest Accepted
Speak with the council elder
“Nod to the elder, then speak to the guard. 'We need to secure the village and make sure no more are skulking about."”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Grachus dips his head to the elder, then turns that same hard focus on the Town Guard. The square is still, waiting for the next order.

Grachus
We need to secure the village and make sure no more are skulking about.

Town Guard
Aye. I take the lanes and the rear wells. If anyone hides, I’ll drag them into the light.
The guard breaks at once, spear angled low as he moves off with purpose. The hostage steadies beside the elders, watching him go.

The Council Elder
Then it is done. We name this service seen, and we will not forget who stood when the hall was threatened.

The Stranger
That is the right of it. The village has a defender, not just a survivor.
A few elders exchange grim looks at the fallen bandits, but none step back from Grachus now. The hall doors remain open, waiting for sealing and search.

Speak with the council elder
“Approach the hall, search inside for any bandits hiding.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Grachus crosses to the hall doors and slips inside, sword low. The chamber is empty at first glance, but fresh scuffs mark the rush of boots along the plank floor.

Grachus
The tracks turn toward the back rooms.
He follows them through the dim hall, past overturned benches and a split jug of spilled water. A loose latch swings on one shutter, still trembling from recent use.
At the rear arch, Grachus finds a narrow servant door standing open. The air beyond smells of dust and cold stone, and it leads toward the old store cellars.
He steps through and checks the adjoining room. No bandit crouches there, only a dropped belt knife and a fresh scrape on the wall where someone forced past.

The Council Elder
So they did use the old ways. Seal that passage, and we may still hold this place.

The Stranger
Then the question is answered. The hall is not empty, only abandoned in haste.
Grachus comes back with dust on one boot and a shallow cut across his knuckles from the doorframe. Outside, the elder watches him with newly serious eyes while the open hall waits for his next word or motion.
“We need bricks, timber and mortar to seal that passage.”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled -1)

Grachus
We need bricks, timber, and mortar to seal that passage.

The Council Elder
Then we use what the village can spare, and we use it at once.
The elder turns on his heel and points toward the yard, already summoning hands and hammers.

The Stranger
A sensible seal. The old way is gone, but the hole still has a mouth.
Grachus’s words land hard. The elder’s order ripples outward, and the first stack of salvaged timber is brought to the hall door.

Elara
He knows what to ask for, at least.
Dust shakes free from the lintel as the rear opening is measured for closure, but a fresh crack in the plaster shows the wall will cost time and muscle.
✓ Quest Accepted
Seal the passage and secure the hall
“Help fix the wall.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Grachus steps to the cracked stretch and braces both hands against the plaster. With one hard shove, the loosened section gives, and the wall accepts fresh timber as a proper backing.
He hauls a beam level while the council’s men wedge stone and mortar around it. Dust sifts down, but the crack stops spreading.

The Council Elder
Hold it there. Good. That line will take the weight now.
Grachus shifts his grip and drives the beam tighter into place. The battered plaster no longer sags, and the opening looks ready for a final seal.

The Stranger
That is the sort of strength a village remembers.

Elara
He is not just breaking things. He is fixing them.
The elder gives a short, formal nod, then turns to the workers with a sharper voice. More mortar. Faster now. The hall is still open, but the wall finally begins to look defensible.
“After this we need to finish securing the village.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

The last wedge bites home, and the wall holds. Mortar cakes the seam, the timber stops trembling, and the square eases as the workers step back from the breach.

The Council Elder
That will do. Seal the rest from this side, and clear the lane to the hall.
Grachus shifts his weight from the brace and lets the support stand without him. The strain leaves his arms, but a fresh scrape opens across his knuckles where the wood bites skin.

The Stranger
There, then. The village is not sleeping soundly, but it can sleep without fear of that passage.

Elara
And the hall? If there are more gaps, we find them now, before nightfall.
The elder turns, taking in the square, the sealed crack, and the men gathered around Grachus. His expression hardens into something public and final.

The Council Elder
Grachus, the village names your blade and your hands in the work of this day. You are owed our thanks, and our trust, while this wall stands.
