The hatch blows open, and the village square floods into view. Smoke curls over broken carts, while armed men ring the council hall like wolves around a pen.

At the hall steps stands the bandit leader, broad-shouldered and sure, one hand raised for silence. Behind him, villagers huddle and a few bandits shove them into line.

Bandit

Bandit

Drop your steel, and the hall stays standing. Refuse, and the village starves for it.

Grachus reaches the threshold with his sword drawn. Behind him, the hostage staggers into the cellar light, and the town guard braces at his side.

Town Guard

Town Guard

There, Grachus. He is the one. Hold the square, I keep the hostage clear.

Elara

Elara

They have more inside the hall. If he buys time, they will kill the village by inches.

The Stranger

The Stranger

The leader wants a bargain, not a brawl. That makes him dangerous.

The bandit line tightens. One crossbow rises. The square holds its breath, and the road to the council hall lies open in front of Grachus.

Negotiate with the bandit leader while moving into striking distance

Grachus steps off the threshold and into the square, blade low, body loose, closing the gap without hurrying.

Bandit

Bandit

Careful, swordsman. Take one more step and your council dies loud.

Grachus

Grachus

Then keep them breathing.

He keeps coming. The leader shifts his weight, and the crossbowman hesitates as Grachus enters striking distance.

Bandit

Bandit

You are brave, or stupid.

The hostage is dragged half a pace back from the hall wall, but the guard's line holds. Grachus is now close enough to split the leader's command if steel speaks first.

The Stranger

The Stranger

He is choosing his words because he fears the next one.

"I am neither, I am just a man. You and your men need to drop your weapons and leave, or you will not leave at all."

Grachus

Grachus

I am neither, I am just a man. You and your men need to drop your weapons and leave, or you will not leave at all.

Bandit

Bandit

Hah. Hear that, lads? He thinks words are armor.

A few bandits snort, but no one lowers a blade. The crossbowman lifts his weapon again, and the leader jerks the hostage closer to the hall door.

Bandit

Bandit

You want peace, swordsman, then step back and throw yours down first.

The Stranger

The Stranger

He has failed to shake them. Now they test the edge of his restraint.

The square tightens around the offer. The guard squares his shoulders, the hostage goes rigid, and the bandits wait to see whether Grachus answers with steel or surrender.

Answer with steel striking around the hostage into the bandit leaders throat.

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +3)

Grachus moves before the bandit leader can finish drawing breath. His longsword flashes in a short, brutal line around the hostage’s shoulder.

Steel kisses the leader’s throat, not deep, but enough. His shout cuts off into a choking gasp as he jerks backward, fingers flying to the wound.

Bandit

Bandit

Get him off me! Now!

The nearest bandits flinch, their line breaking for a heartbeat. The hostage stumbles free of the leader’s grip and reels toward the guard.

Town Guard

Town Guard

Back! Keep clear of him!

The Stranger’s gaze sharpens on the leader’s throat, then on the bandits behind him, as if measuring whether the square is about to crack open.

The bandit leader staggers, one hand slicking red at his collar, the other snatching for balance. Grachus stands over the line he has broken, and the square holds its breath.

"Leave now or your will be buried like the dogs you are." Threaten and be ready to finish the leader and the rest of the bandits

Grachus bares his teeth and spits the warning across the square, but the words land rough and ragged, more bark than command. The bandit leader only blinks at him, then presses a shaking hand harder to his throat.

Bandit

Bandit

You hear that? He’s bluffing.

A couple of bandits inch backward anyway, torn between fear and their leader’s glare. The square tightens around the silence, carts creaking softly in the smoke.

Town Guard

Town Guard

Keep your eyes on them. One rush and I cut him down.

The hostage lurches fully behind the guard now, too winded to stand on his own. The guard plants his feet, making a wall with his body and blade.

The Stranger

The Stranger

The leader is bleeding pride faster than blood.

The bandit leader wipes his palm on his own tunic, then drags his weapon up despite the tremor in his arm. His nearest men glance to him, waiting for the next order, not sure they want it.

Kill the bandit leader and then the other bandits

Grachus commits before the bandit leader can steady his grip. His blade flashes once, and the leader folds to the stones, weapon clattering from numb fingers.

The nearest bandits break at the sight. One turns to run, but Grachus is already there, cutting him down in the same motion.

Another rushes in with a wild cry. Grachus meets him head-on, and the man drops silent at his feet.

The square goes suddenly still except for smoke and the scrape of boots. No one else presses forward.

Town Guard

Town Guard

By the gods... it’s done.

The hostage stares at the fallen bandits, then grips the guard’s arm as if to make sure the ground stays solid beneath him.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That answer ends the matter faster than words ever could.
