Dust hangs in the lane as the heavy cellar door groans open. An elderly woman stumbles out, white-faced and shaking, and closes the distance to Grachus at once.

Elara

Elara

They have the council in the hall. Locked in. They want the village grain stores, all of it.

She seizes Grachus by the arm, then flicks a terrified glance past him toward the cart and the sprawled bandit. The town guard keeps one hard hand on the captive, watching the lane for trouble.

Town Guard

Town Guard

Hold fast, Grachus. If there is another thief near, I will not miss him twice.

From the far end of the lane, a narrow figure in a smoke-dark cloak steps out from behind a stack of crates. They raise both hands slowly, showing empty palms.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Easy. I am no bandit. I heard the shouting and came to see what bargain the thieves are making with your folk.

Elara tightens her grip, breathless and furious. The Stranger stays back, waiting, while the guard and Grachus hold the broken lane between them and the hall.

Grachus’s sword clears the sheath in one hard flash, and he breaks into a sprint down the lane.

Dust kicks up under his boots as the grain store comes into view, its doors yawning open.

Elara

Elara

Grachus, the hostages are inside, by the cellar!

The guard hauls the unconscious bandit by the collar, glancing from the cart to the store with renewed urgency.

The Stranger

The Stranger

So the heart of this trouble is there... interesting.

At the threshold, shadow shifts behind stacked grain sacks, and a muffled voice inside snaps, 'Nobody move.'

Grachus

Grachus

The cellar door is still open.

I check the cellar door first

Elara

Grachus skids to the cellar threshold instead of the store, sword low and ready.

The ajar door swings on a loose hinge, and a fresh scrape marks the stone step beside it.

Grachus

Grachus

Boot prints. Two sets, going down.

He leans in just far enough to see the dark stair, the air inside cold and grain-sour.

Elara

Elara

There were men below, Grachus. They dragged someone toward the hall, then one came back for the sacks.

At the base of the steps, a dropped cord and a spilled lantern wick glow faintly in the gloom, pointing deeper into the cellar.

From the grain store, the muffled order inside sharpens into a bark of alarm, as if the hidden thieves hear him at the door.

I head down into the cellar

Grachus takes the stairs in a single controlled rush, shoulder low, boots silent on the damp stone. The cellar swallows him, and the lane noise fades above.

The air turns colder below, thick with grain dust and lamp smoke. A rough wall of stacked sacks looms ahead, half-lit by the fallen wick.

Elara

Elara

They came through here. Two of them. One went toward the hall with the hostages.

Her warning hangs behind him at the stairhead as he spots a loose crate lid and a narrow trail of spilt grain leading deeper into the cellar.

Grachus

Grachus

Fresh footprints cut across the dust, then split.

Near the far stack, a bound sack has been slashed open, and a small brass key glints where it has fallen into the grain.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If you mean to follow them, be quick. The one below knows you are here.

Grachus drops from the stair base into the cellar floor and takes the grain trail at a measured stride, keeping his blade low and ready.

The spilt kernels crunch softly under his boots. The footprints ahead are fresh, turning between the sacks toward a darker recess.

Grachus

Grachus

The prints are recent, and they run straight through the dust.

He slips past a leaning stack, the brass key now behind him near the far sacks, and reaches the deeper corner where the grain smell thins.

Elara

Elara

Careful. That side room was shut a moment ago.

A narrow cellar door stands ahead, half-open now, its black gap breathing cold air into the warm dust.

The Stranger

The Stranger

There, by the door. Someone has just moved inside.

I enter the side room

Grachus slips through the half-open door in one smooth stride, blade leading. The cold room beyond swallows him, then gives him back in a shard of dim light.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Quick hands. Good.

Inside, stacked sacks loom beside a bare wall, and a second spill of grain glitters underfoot. A brass key lies near the threshold, now just inside reach from this side.

Elara

Elara

Is anyone with you in there?

From the back corner, a loose board shifts with a faint scrape. The dark room is bigger than it first looked, and something unseen has just moved deeper within.

Grachus

Grachus

The room has a back corner and another exit of some kind.

Grachus holds the doorway cleanly, inside at last, while the hidden movement leaves the next choice hanging in the cold air.

I move to the back corner

Grachus crosses the cellar floor in silence, boots brushing spilled grain as he angles toward the back corner.

The loose board answers him with a thin creak, and the dark gap beneath it widens just enough to show a hidden seam in the wall.

He stops there, sword low and ready, the point hovering over the shifted plank.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That board was touched recently.

Elara

Elara

Grachus, be careful. There may be more than one of them in there.

From the seam comes a faint draught, cold and stale, like air from a deeper place below.

I inspect the hidden seam

Grachus crouches and drags his fingertips along the seam. The hidden joint gives under his touch, not as stone, but as a fitted panel cut into the wall.

Grachus

Grachus

A door, not a crack.

He shifts the board aside. Cold air spills out stronger now, carrying the smell of damp earth and old storage.

A narrow passage stands behind the wall, just wide enough for a man to slip through with grain sacks stacked low beside it.

Elara

Elara

There. I knew they were hiding something.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Useful, and quiet. Someone planned this route.

Inside the passage, a lantern glints once on rough stone, and fresh scuffs mark the floor leading deeper in.

Grachus slips into the passage in one clean motion, shoulders turned sideways, sword kept low to avoid the stone.

Cold air brushes past him as the hidden door frame swallows the cellar light behind his back.

The narrow way slopes down a few paces, and the lantern glow ahead wavers against rough-hewn walls.

Elara

Elara

Grachus, wait. If they are moving the council, this way may lead right to them.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Or to whoever thinks they can keep you from them. Either way, the passage is active.

At Grachus's feet, fresh scuffs cut through the dust, and a scrap of cord lies snagged on a jutting stone.

Ahead, the lantern shifts once, as if carried by someone turning a corner just out of sight.

Grachus glides after the lantern, silent as the stone tightens around him.

The passage bends, and the light spills across a second turn cut sharply into the rock.

A faint breath of voices reaches him, low and hurried, beyond the bend.

He comes up to the corner before the thieves can hear his steps, blade ready.

Elara

Elara

Grachus, do you see them? Tell me if the council is there.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Careful. The lantern is being carried, not left.

At the turn, fresh boot prints cross the dust, and the cord scrap matches a loose tie hanging from the wall.

The lantern glow widens ahead, revealing a sliver of open space just beyond the bend.

Grachus bursts around the bend in a blur of steel and stone dust.

His sword flashes through the lantern light, and the first thief staggers back before he can shout.

Elara

Elara

There, ahead, I see movement. Get to them!

The Stranger

The Stranger

The passage opens wider than it looked. They are boxed in now.

The hidden space opens into a cramped store chamber, sacks piled high and a coil of rope beside them.

Two thieves recoil from Grachus's sudden charge, one dropping the lantern as the flame wobbles hard across the floor.

A Thief

He's through! Hold him back, or the hostages are lost!

Beyond the thieves, a bound figure shifts against a post in the lantern glare, and the room falls into a tense, half-lit standoff.

Grachus drives deeper into the chamber, and the thieves break under the force of his rush.

One sword stroke cuts the first rope clean. The bound hostage jerks free, gasping into the lantern haze.

The second thief stumbles back into the sacks, weapon lowered too late to matter.

The room goes still except for the hiss of the toppled lantern and the scrape of boots on grain dust.

Elara

Elara

You got them. Grachus, the council, are they still alive?

The Stranger

The Stranger

That answer decides whether this cellar becomes a refuge, or a grave.

Behind the freed hostage, a torn map peels loose from the post, its ink dark with a route marked toward the hall.
