The silver light tightens around the child like a waking chain. He steps onto the open floor, and the chamber hushes as if the stone itself is listening.

The child lifts his chin. His voice comes out small, but the words carry old weight. "We bind the dark below with blood of the ward. We keep the door. We keep the dead. We do not let the hunger rise."

The Guardian bows her head, as if hearing a vow remembered at last. The Tunnel-Warden goes very still, dust on his sleeves catching the light.

The Child

The Child

I know this place. I am the last to stand it.

The wolves at the threshold flatten low, no longer prowling, only afraid. The floor’s glow steadies, not as a threat now, but as a seal waiting for the right answer.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

Then the bargain was never mine to name. It was yours all along.

The chamber seems to exhale. Ancient words hang between them, and Bjor sees it plainly now, the child is not lost to the mound. He belongs to it.

I witness the child's vow in silence

Bjor keeps still, axe lowered, giving the boy the silence he needs. The chamber holds its breath with him, silver light resting on stone as the vow settles into the seal.

I speak to the child about the vow

Your vow is not a prison, child. It is a burden you choose to carry.

The Child

The Child

I thought it would be a chain. But it feels like a door I have to stand before.

The Guardian

The Guardian

A witness hears the old words, and the old words remain true. That is enough.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

The bargain is thinning. If the heir stands firm, the mound holds. If he falters, I feel stone remember how to fall.

The boy lowers his hands to the glowing seal, and the silver light answers without flaring. The chamber does not shake. Instead, the murmur from below settles into a distant, watchful hush.

The Child

The Child

Then I will stay. But I need to know what I am keeping safe down there, and what you want me to call this place.

The Guardian turns her gaze to Bjor, waiting with the same quiet patience as the stone beneath them.

I ask what lies beneath the mound

What lies beneath the mound?

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

Not treasure. Not a curse, either, though folk prefer that word. Below is a keeping place, where vows are stored, names are remembered, and the dead are not left to wander hungry.

The Guardian

The Guardian

And here, the heir stands watch. That is what the old blood was for.

The Child

The Child

A place for keeping... then it is not a tomb alone.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

The lower way leads to the root chamber. There are passages cut by those before me, and one sealed turn farther down that even I do not trust.

The Guardian

The Guardian

If he must name this place, let him name it truthfully. A mound can be a grave, a gate, or a vow made stone.

The child lifts his hands from the seal, and the light holds steady under his fingers. The hush below remains, listening.

The Child

The Child

Then I call it a watchhouse. If I stay, I want to know the way I am keeping.

I ask the child what he must keep watch over

What do you keep watch over here?

The Child

The Child

The names, mostly. And the way below. If I fail, the mound forgets what it guards.

The Guardian

The Guardian

He guards the witness of it all, the dead kept from hunger, the vow kept from rot.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

And he guards my bargain's edge, though I like that less. I have held this place with stone and promise longer than some kingdoms last.

The Child

The Child

I do not want only duty. I want the path as well, so I know what I am keeping.

The Guardian

Then look well, heir. A keeper who cannot name the root chamber will not stand through the long nights.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

Come, then. If you mean to learn, I will show you the lower way before the hush changes its mind.

I follow the tunnel-warden below

Bjor falls in behind the Tunnel-Warden as the silver ring at the seal loosens into a path. Stone steps, cut steep into the earth, take the first sound of their descent.

His boot skids on grit, and the scrape rings too loud in the tight shaft. Dust shakes free above them, then settles on his cloak and axe.

The Tunnel-Warden

The Tunnel-Warden

Careful. These stairs remember every careless foot.

Bjor keeps moving, one hand brushing the wall for balance, and the passage narrows around his shoulders. The strange murmurs below grow clearer, like voices muffled through water.

The Guardian

The Guardian

Witness this, then. If the heir walks it, the mound is not empty.

The Tunnel-Warden reaches the landing first and lifts a palm toward a black arch ahead. The air beyond it smells of cold iron and old rain.

Bjor arrives at the threshold below. Behind him, a loose stone slips free and clatters down the stairs, loud enough to make the Tunnel-Warden glance back in alarm.
