The Name Beneath the Shrine

Graven still pins Father Oren against the stair wall while Lushion’s staff traces the scarred throat without touching it. The cracked boundary stone shifts between Oren’s hands.

A hairline fracture opens through the stone. A damp pulse travels beneath their feet, rising through each step like a heartbeat from buried mud.

The fracture widens with a soft click. Graven tightens his hold, and Oren’s shoulder strikes the wall as the pulse passes through the bones of the shrine.

Beyond the next landing, the stair opens into a chamber around a circular pit. Fresh impressions cover its walls, each one shaped like a mouth, their damp edges flexing without sound.

Lushion’s suspicion checks Oren’s hands and the dark behind him before he commits. That hesitation makes the first grip awkward, but his strength does not fail.

His bone hand closes around Oren’s robe and shoulder. The Staff of Dark Rituals channels a tight current through his arm, lending force without spilling magic into the marked stair.

Forbidden knowledge recognizes the safest angle: pull across the old relay marks, not against them. Lushion twists, using the wall as leverage, and tears Oren clear of the steps.

Oren stumbles onto the landing beside Graven, the cracked boundary stone clutched against his chest. His boots leave the stair completely as the damp pulse passes beneath them.

Lushion raises the Staff of Dark Rituals between Graven and the circular pit. His suspicion checks Oren's mouth and hands first, delaying the command by one watchful breath.

Forbidden Knowledge identifies the old relay's weakness: the mouths can imitate a speaker, but they cannot seize a guarded voice. The staff channels a narrow ward into Graven's purpose, strengthening it without waste.

Graven turns toward the pit and plants his shield across the landing. The damp impressions flex in unison, but the soundless summons finds no path through his watch.

The effort leaves Lushion's concentration briefly thin. Oren notices the hesitation, and the exposed uncertainty hangs between them before Lushion's will closes over it again.

Lushion keeps one eye on Father Oren Vale and Graven while his bone hand lifts the Staff of Dark Rituals. Only after their voices and hands remain still does he turn toward the pit.

Forbidden Knowledge supplies the shape of the scouting rite: three shadow shades, thin as torn darkness, peel from the staff’s channel and gather at the pit’s rim.

The Staff of Dark Rituals carries the working with disciplined force, minimizing the magic required as the shades descend soundlessly into the circular opening.

They pass the first ring of damp mouth-impressions and spread through the chamber below, their sight returning as brief, cold flashes through Lushion’s awareness.

The pit opens into a buried passage branching beneath the shrine. One shade finds a dry ledge, another traces sealed doors, and the third follows a descending channel marked by older relay scars.

The shades return without disturbance, folding into the staff’s shadow. Their impressions leave the route mapped in Lushion’s mind: the passage is open, the doors remain sealed, and nothing living waits beyond the first descent.
