The Name Beneath the Shrine

Father Oren Vale breaks from the altar and descends several steps, clutching the cracked boundary stone against his chest as though it were a reliquary. The stair groans beneath him.

His collar slips open as he moves, exposing pale scars that encircle his throat and vanish beneath the torn priestly robes. The marks resemble old ritual lettering, cut into skin and healed badly.

Graven steps across the stair, his battered armor scraping stone. He plants himself between Father Oren Vale and the descending darkness, shield angled toward the priest.

Behind Graven, the ritual-bound skeleton twists sharply toward Father Oren Vale. Its jaw lowers, and the empty sockets fix on the scars beneath his collar with sudden, impossible recognition.

Graven catches the priest by both arms and pins him against the stair wall. Father Oren’s cracked boundary stone slips against his chest, but his hands remain around it.

Paranoia keeps Lushion’s attention split, tracking the priest’s fingers and the stair behind him for betrayal. His staff rises, its channel narrowing the examination to the scarred throat.

Forbidden knowledge supplies the pattern: the scars are not a mere brand but a relay of ritual speech, cut to carry a presence onward. Entity Appraisal finds the mark dormant, not empty.

The staff’s restrained current follows each healed letter without opening the skin. The full design resolves beneath his scrutiny: the road below was made through Oren, and the shrine still remembers its direction.
