Footsteps at the Door

The office goes tight with the sound of the stairwell footstep outside. The Office Controller freezes at the desk, pen hovering over Regina's bracket page. Cold air pours through the shattered window and stirs the loose contracts.

If he comes in, I am done. If she moves first, I am done too.

Regina stands between the desk and the door, keys in hand, the paperwork for the sanctioned path spread like a trap she has already sprung. The room waits for her next move.

It is entered. It is signed. Let me keep the room quiet.

The stairwell creaks again, closer now. The Control chain is still alive, but only because the room still holds. Regina has the desk, the contracts, and the only open line to the bracket.

Footsteps at the Door

Regina moves first. She leaves the desk light behind and steps into the stairwell, shoulders squared, keys low in one hand as the cold draft follows her out.

The narrow landing swallows the office noise. The stairwell footstep that called her here is now close enough to feel in the boards underfoot.

Below, a figure pauses on the steps, half hidden by shadow and the angle of the turn. The climb stops the moment Regina shows herself.

The sound is on my level now.

Do not let him through here.

Behind Regina, the office door stays open on the wrecked room, with the signed bracket page, the sealed folder bearing her name, and the desk phone still within reach back on the wood.

Keep it quiet. Please. If he hears this, it is over for both of us.

It was over when you tried to sell my path. I am taking it back.

Regina lowers the keys, the packet of contracts hanging loose in her other hand. The office light spills onto the landing while the stairs stay dark and still.

By the time the dust settled, the chain had been cut and the paper trail could not hide it anymore. Regina King stood with the sanctioned route in hand, no longer waiting at the edge of somebody else’s fight. The chapter closed on a quiet, earned certainty, with the gym behind her and the real bracket ahead.
