Emil drives north along US-93, the cruiser’s tires humming over sun-baked pavement. Caliente falls behind, leaving only scrub, pale hills, and the Annex wreckage ahead.

At the access road, orange barriers lean crookedly across the dust. Fresh footprints cross beneath them toward a disturbed section of blackened concrete and collapsed fencing.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Stay behind the barrier unless I tell you otherwise. I need to document what is here before anything gets moved.

Brooks checks the radio on his shoulder, then crouches beside a weatherproof document case half-buried near the restricted section. Dust has gathered over its lid, but one corner is freshly exposed.

The Radio Dispatcher

The Radio Dispatcher

Unit twelve, confirm you are at the access road. The marked section is still restricted. Advise before entering.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Confirmed. I have one civilian witness with me. There is a case near the disturbance, and I am checking whether it is evidence or site material.

He looks from the case to Adam, careful now in a way he was not at the diner. The footprints, the sealed container, and the wreckage make the question larger than a missing identification.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Adam, what do you recognize here? The case, the barriers, the building, or those tracks? Tell me only what you know.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify the source of the Annex disturbance

“"I recognize the exterior of The Annex." He looks out at the building that, to outsiders, was just a government seismic research facility. But to him was where he was born, designed to be the next stage of human evolution. His own footprints from leaving the wreckage have faded, but these new ones are concerning. Leading TO the Annex. And the sealed case, half buried. How did it end up out here? And what does it contain. Adam, not knowing about police processes, goes to pick up the case and open it. If he reaches it, he will attempt to break the seal without hesitation.”

The Deputy
Adam

Adam

This is the Annex. The footprints lead inward, and the case was placed here after I left.

Adam studies the blackened facade, recognizing the government research shell over the place where he was born and designed. Then he steps beneath the barrier toward the case.

He reaches down to lift it, applying careful, metered strength rather than the force that could fracture its housing. The case does not rise. Its lower edge is caught beneath a slab, and the dust shifts enough to reveal a steel cable disappearing into the rubble.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Adam, stop. Do not move it again. That is not loose site material.

The formal instruction reaches Adam as a procedural boundary, not an obvious danger. He has already found the useful fact: the case is anchored below, and the disturbance around it is fresh.

The Deputy

The Deputy

You recognized the building. Now tell me why those tracks go toward it, and whether you know what that cable is attached to.

Beyond the exposed cable, a narrow gap under the broken slab shows the case’s side label: a faded black rectangle marked with a white inventory code. Its seal remains intact, but the anchor can be traced.

✓ Quest Accepted

Give Deputy Brooks an account of the Annex disturbance that explains Adam’s presence

“"Tracks going towards the Annex can only be that someone is attempting to enter the Annex, likely to gather the research materials within or determine if access to the research materials is possible. Tracks leaving should be found or assume the individual is still here." Adam answers in a flat and direct manner while he looks closely at the case and the exposed cable. "I do not know about the cable. I will attempt to locate any identification marks upon it."”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Adam

Adam

Tracks going toward the Annex can only mean that someone is attempting to enter, likely to gather research materials or determine whether access is possible. If there are no tracks leaving, I assume the individual is still here. I do not know about the cable. I will attempt to locate identification marks upon it.

Adam crouches beside the slab and follows the exposed cable with his eyes, keeping his hands clear of the case. His answer is complete and exact, but its formal stiffness makes the ordinary field assessment sound like a prepared report.

The Deputy

The Deputy

That is a reasonable assumption. Keep your attention on the cable, and do not put weight on the slab.

Adam angles his head into the narrow gap. Fine dust clings to the cable’s dark sheath, but a clean section near the concrete carries stamped lettering and a small metal tag beneath the grime.

Adam

Adam

The cable is marked as a monitored access line, not ordinary construction material.

The tag reads Epsilon Facilities, Restricted Perimeter, Line 04. A second mark identifies the cable as connected to a buried alarm circuit leading toward the Annex foundation.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Epsilon Facilities. That gives me something specific to document. Do you recognize the company, or only the fact that the line runs into the site?

“"Not a company. Epsilon was the name of the project team that operated within the Annex doing research and development into human genetic development. The plural of 'Facilities' suggests they have multiple sites. This is connected to a buried alarm circuit. There is no one to respond to the alarms anymore, so interaction should not be an issue." With the assumption made, Adam will attempt to get the case out again.”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

The Deputy
Adam

Adam

Not a company. Epsilon was the project team conducting research and development into human genetic development within the Annex. “Facilities” implies multiple sites. The alarm has no responding staff, so interaction should not be an issue.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I understand the distinction. I am still treating the circuit as live until we establish otherwise. If you can retrieve the case without damaging it, do so carefully.

Brooks shifts back from the slab, keeping one hand near his radio while giving Adam room. The deputy watches the cable, the barrier, and Adam’s boots in quick succession.

Adam plants his secondhand work boots on stable gravel, testing their nearly fitting soles before bracing. They protect his feet from sharp debris and hot metal, though their worn tread slips slightly against dust.

He works his fingers beneath the slab’s edge and meters the force through his shoulders and back. Concrete grinds against the buried anchor; the cable stays clear as he lifts the slab enough to free the case.

The case comes out intact. Adam sets it on open ground with controlled care, then lowers the slab without crushing the cable or disturbing the marked alarm line.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Good. Leave the seal untouched. I will photograph the inventory code and call in the location. You have recovered evidence, Adam, not opened it.

“Adam looks at Brooks, confused, "Evidence? Of what? Until it is opened, it is just a case. The contents are what hold knowledge. What is it that you are looking for evidence of and for what reason?" Adam had gone along because it involved the Annex, where he last saw Doctor Voxx and where he grew up. The though that the Deputy was investigating something didn't even cross his mind until now.”

SUCCESS (Good Reading a Room, rolled +2)

Adam

Adam

Evidence of what? Until it is opened, it is only a case. What are you investigating, and for what reason?

The question arrives in complete, formal terms, more like a prepared report than ordinary conversation. Its precision nevertheless leaves the deputy no room to mistake Adam’s request for defiance.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Evidence of an unauthorized entry, possible theft, and anything connected to the disturbance here. The case may show who placed it, when it was moved, or what site material someone was seeking.

The deputy lowers his hand from the radio and answers without dressing the explanation up. Adam’s stiff phrasing has made the question unmistakably specific, and the deputy responds in the same practical register.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I was sent because someone crossed a restricted barrier and disturbed a site tied to a collapse. I need to establish whether this was trespass, salvage, or something more serious before anyone touches that seal.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Your connection to the Annex makes your observations relevant, Adam, but it does not make you a suspect. I am documenting facts first so the report has a defensible purpose.

“Adam stares at the Deputy for a moment as he takes that in, then he asks, "You believe I am tied to this facility. Yet you have not asked me about the collapse, what I was doing there. You have certainly considered how I could have connected to the Annex here yet not have an ID. What reason do you have not to inquire about me further?" Adam is genuinely confused, he believed that if anyone knew he came from the Annex, they would attempt to drag him back. He had gone with the deputy because of an impulse yet any other time, he would have avoided association. So to have the Deputy not press further or attempt to lock Adam away has him uncertain about what is going on.”

SUCCESS (Good Reading a Room, rolled +1)

Adam

Adam

You believe I am tied to this facility, yet you have not asked about the collapse or what I was doing there. What reason do you have not to inquire further about me?

Adam holds Emil’s gaze, his complete phrasing turning uncertainty into something that sounds almost like a formal challenge. The question is exact, but its substance is plainly sincere.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I have considered it. You know this place, you have no identification, and you were present when it collapsed. Those facts require questions, but they do not answer them by themselves.

Brooks studies Adam’s face, recognizing credible testimony rather than a rehearsed evasion. Adam’s facility manner makes the exchange stiff, but the careful details also make his confusion difficult to mistake for a performance.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I have not detained you because you came with me voluntarily, followed instructions, and helped preserve evidence. I do not have grounds to lock you away merely because your circumstances are unusual.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I will ask about the collapse and your connection to the Annex. I will also tell you what I am asking and why. If you choose not to answer something, say so plainly. That is different from hiding.

The deputy leaves the barrier, the sealed case, and the open road visible between them. Nothing in his posture suggests an attempt to seize Adam, and his explanation gives the uncertainty a boundary instead of a cage.

“That makes sense to Adam and he nods, "Very well. I will answer the questions. May I request it be at a later time." Adam looks to the tracks leading to the Annex and looks for tracks leading away. "We have not yet found the person who made the tracks yet."”

The Deputy
Adam

Adam

Very well. I will answer the questions. May I request that it be at a later time? We have not yet found the person who made these tracks.

Adam nods, then turns from the deputy toward the disturbed ground. His formal request sounds like a scheduling matter rather than a natural postponement, but Brooks understands it and lets him search.

Adam follows the clearest impressions toward the Annex, then scans the gravel, broken concrete, and dust for a matching trail leading away. The wreckage has shifted underfoot, blurring edges and overlapping old marks.

Adam

Adam

The incoming tracks are clearer than the outgoing evidence.

Near the breach, he finds several partial prints turning across one another, but none forms a continuous route back to the access road. A broad scuff ends at the broken foundation, where rubble and dust conceal the next step.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I see the same thing. We can document the approach, but I cannot honestly call the way out clear. Do not disturb those partial marks.

The search fails to reveal an exit trail, and the disturbed ground is now too compromised for a useful second pass. Brooks raises his camera toward the overlapping prints and the breach, turning the uncertainty into evidence rather than a conclusion.

“If Adam can't find the tracks out, he will instead look to see if they somehow gained entry. While moving carefully, remembering Brooks' warning about not disturbing marks, the treatment of the case as evidence, and concludes that he doesn't want anything that could be gleamed as evidence disturbed. So Adam will move carefully while searching for anything that the mystery intruder might have found or if he had found an entry point.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Evidence at the Annex
the deputy
The Deputy

Adam moves along the breach without stepping on marked ground. His secondhand boots find stable gravel and broken concrete, their worn soles protecting his feet while forcing each careful placement to remain slow.

He studies the rubble instead of shifting it: dust disturbed beneath a bent section of fencing, a narrow gap beside the foundation, and a fresh scrape where someone squeezed through without crossing the documented approach.

Behind the broken foundation, Adam identifies a concealed service entrance with its door forced inward. A torn black access badge lies just inside, beside a compact flashlight and a folded site map marked with a route toward the lower research rooms.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Do not touch any of that. You found an entry point and objects that may belong to the person who made the tracks. I am photographing their positions first.

Adam keeps his hands clear and reports the locations in complete, formal terms. The precision preserves the scene, though the deputy must spend additional time translating the search into a concise field description for his report.

The Deputy

The Deputy

This gives us a probable entry route, but not the person’s identity or direction after entry. Stay here while I document the badge, flashlight, map, and door.

“Adam nods and decides to try and gain higher ground to see if he can spot anything. Using his athletics, he tries to climb up the tallest structure around to then look around the area, not bothering to hide his full capability from Deputy Brooks while assuming that whoever came through wouldn't have left evidence so high up.”

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

Evidence at the Annex

The Deputy

Adam nods and selects the highest surviving section of the Annex foundation, a tilted concrete frame rising above the broken fencing. The deputy watches as Adam tests the dry gravel with his nearly fitting work boots, then climbs without concealing his full capability.

His worn soles slide briefly across loose dust, but his metered strength keeps each handhold and slab intact. He shifts his weight with deliberate care, avoiding the weak edges while ascending the fractured structure in a steady sequence.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I understand why you are doing it. Keep your attention on the structure, and do not climb past anything that will not support you.

Adam reaches the highest stable point and stands above the breach. From there, the access road, orange barriers, cruiser, and surrounding scrub lie in one broad view, while the Annex roofline blocks the lower research rooms.

Adam

Adam

The road is visible in both directions, but no person is moving near the barriers.

He surveys the rubble and the service entrance from above, finding no evidence placed on the elevated frame. His formal, careful movements make the climb look less like improvisation than a procedure, and the deputy records the vantage point below.

✓ Quest Accepted

Answer Deputy Brooks’s questions about Adam’s identity and purpose

− Scene Quest Removed

Give Deputy Brooks an account of the Annex disturbance that explains Adam’s presence

“"Unless they had already departed and were driving away from our entry vector, they are hiding somewhere in the area. What do you surmise, Deputy Brooks?" Adam will scan the nearby area with his eyes, his ears perking as he tries to hear anything that is out the ordinary.”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -3)

Adam

Adam

Unless they had already departed and were driving away from our entry vector, they are hiding somewhere in the area. What do you surmise, Deputy Brooks?

Adam scans the scrub, road, barriers, and broken foundation from his high perch. His eyes catch shifting dust and old shadows; his ears gather wind, cooling metal, and distant traffic, but nothing distinctly human.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I surmise they are either inside the lower structure or already beyond the area. I cannot support more than that from what we have.

The deputy’s ordinary phrasing lands oddly against Adam’s exact question, and Adam parses it as a firm assessment rather than the cautious field judgment it is. He searches the same angles again, finding no sharper answer.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Your vantage helps, but the wind is erasing sound and the rubble breaks every sightline. Come down without crossing the breach. We have enough uncertainty to stop searching blindly.

The scan has failed to locate the intruder, but it narrows the practical choice: the elevated view yields no person, no reliable sound, and no safe route to investigate from above. Brooks raises his camera toward the hidden entrance.

“Adam choses a spot away from where evidence most likely is and drops down. The idea of carefully climbing down doesn't come to mind, having done similar drops during tests in the Annex.”

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

Adam chooses a clear patch away from the documented prints and drops from the tilted foundation. His secondhand boots strike gravel hard, slip once, then hold without disturbing the evidence.

The impact travels through his legs and leaves a brief heaviness in his muscles, but Rapid Recovery turns the strain into something manageable almost at once. He remains upright, uninjured, and alert.

He looks up at the route he descended, assessing the drop as a completed procedure rather than a choice that required discussion. The careful climb Brooks requested never enters his calculation.

The Deputy

The Deputy

That was a drop, not a descent. You landed cleanly, but please use the safer route when one is available.

Brooks lowers his camera and checks the ground around Adam. The landing has left no fresh mark among the photographed evidence, though the deputy's expression says the distinction does not reassure him.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Stay on this side of the barrier now. I am finishing the photographs, then we will decide whether to call for a search team.

Adam stands beside the clear gravel, boots dusty and intact, while Brooks returns his attention to the service entrance. The immediate movement is finished without damage, and the site remains preserved.

“Adam will stand out of the way while continuing to scan the area. Not wanting to be without something to do as it reminds him of the times he was made to stand still and out the way for long periods of time as the scientists worked around him.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +2)

Adam moves to the clear gravel beside the barrier, keeping his nearly fitting work boots outside every photographed mark. Their worn soles slide once in dust, then hold as he settles into stillness.

He stands where Brooks directed him, but does not let the waiting become empty. The old posture of being placed aside returns in his measured shoulders, while his eyes continue mapping scrub, rubble, road, and breach.

Rapid Recovery has already cleared the heaviness from his landing, leaving his attention sharp rather than strained. He tracks dust movement, tire marks, reflected glass, and the broken foundation’s blind angles.

The scan resolves the uncertainty. Behind a collapsed service wall, a narrow strip of dark fabric shifts once, followed by the dull outline of a person crouched beneath the surviving concrete, a young adult woman with a slim build, dusty olive skin, cropped black hair, and a dark gray jacket over jeans.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Adam, do you have something? Point with your hand. Do not move toward it.

Adam indicates the concealed figure without stepping closer. Brooks follows the line of sight, raises his camera hand toward the radio, and shifts behind the barrier with his attention fixed on the hiding place.

The Deputy

The Deputy

I see them now. Stay where you are. I am calling this in and asking the person inside to show their hands.

“While Adam is told to remain where he is, he keeps watch on the figure, committing the details to memory while preparing his body to spring into action should they run and the Deputy can't catch them.”

The woman is concealed beneath the wall, with clear routes toward the scrub and service road.

He lowers his center of gravity without advancing. His cheap work boots test the dry gravel, their worn soles sliding a fraction before finding purchase, leaving him balanced outside the evidence marks.

The earlier drop has left no lingering heaviness. Rapid Recovery keeps his legs ready rather than tired, while his shoulders remain loose enough to move without announcing the preparation.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Keep watching her. I am notifying dispatch and giving her one chance to show her hands.

Brooks speaks into the radio without looking away. Beneath the concrete, the woman shifts her weight, and Adam tracks the motion, the road, and the scrub in one continuous assessment.

Adam is positioned to intercept if she runs. His feet are planted on the clearest gravel, his route is chosen, and his measured strength waits behind an ordinary human posture.

All right. Come into the open and kneel by the barrier. We will sort out the badge and the rest after backup arrives.

“Her words has Adam concerned. She is unharmed and isn't wearing attire he recognizes as belonging to the Annex. Nor did she seem to recognize him. But why was she trying to get into the Annex. Adam has no understanding of reasons why people might be trying to get in, only the Facility and the secrets, lab work, testing, and his treatment. He can only conclude she's part of that in some way and that makes him tense up, concerned she is about to put him back under their control. For one measured second, Adam’s attention catches on the torn badge and the service entrance. The possibility of Epsilon reclaiming him tightens his posture, and Brooks notices the hesitation before Adam deliberately releases it.

The thought of becoming an asset again remains present, but Adam does not advance, question her, or reach for any route toward the scrub. His refusal to become a weapon holds his movement inside the deputy’s instructions.

He watches the woman’s hands, the badge, and the open road while Brooks approaches only far enough to direct her into custody. Adam’s trained control keeps his strength harmless and his boots planted.

That explains why you came here. It does not make the restricted entry lawful, but it gives me a clear statement for the report.

The Deputy

The Deputy

You can step away from the cruiser now, Adam. Thank you for waiting and for preserving the scene. I will need a fuller statement, but not here.

The standing order lifts. Brooks gestures toward the road and the cruiser’s passenger side, leaving Adam free to choose whether to remain for questions or return with him to town.

“The words Lesa uses confuses Adam. Some of them he heard Doctor Voxx use from time to time, but the others leave his brow furrowed. When Deputy Brook returns, Adam pelts him with questions, "What does she mean by a homemade press badge? Does it gain her access to government facilities? Is it related to this investigation blog? Why would she be digging for the records if she didn't work for the project?" Adam never had a chance to ask questions so now that he can, he's doing it as much as possible to address all of his questions.”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

Adam

Adam

What does Lena mean by a homemade press badge? Does it grant access to government facilities, or is it only related to her investigation blog? Why search for records if she never worked for the project?

The questions arrive in a precise chain, formal enough to sound like an interview transcript. Adam’s brow remains furrowed, and the effort pulls his attention from the evidence team long enough for Brooks to turn fully toward him.

The Deputy

The Deputy

A homemade press badge is something Lena made herself to identify her as a reporter. It does not grant access to government facilities, and it has no legal authority. It tells people what she claims to be doing, nothing more.

The Deputy

The Deputy

Slow down, Adam. An investigation blog is an independent website where she publishes research and reporting. She was looking for a story and believed the collapse might have left records behind. That explains her motive, but it does not make entering lawful.

Brooks answers each term directly, recognizing that Adam is asking for definitions rather than challenging the detention. The questions take several minutes, and the waiting deputies pause their inventory while Brooks gives the fuller explanation.

The Deputy

The Deputy

She did not need to work for Epsilon to investigate it. Outsiders often pursue records because records prove what happened, who operated a site, and whether officials concealed anything and gives her views on her blog. Her badge gave her no permission to enter.

The explanation gives Adam the meanings and motives he requested, though the delay leaves the evidence team waiting and Brooks now needs Adam’s fuller statement before they leave the site.

“Adam chews this and accepts it after a moment. Deputy Brooks wants his statement, so Adam will answer him in private away from the other deputies. "You desire to know why I am so familiar with this place? It is because it was here that I was born. I told you that Project Epsilon was doing research into human genetic advancement. I am the result of that research." To demonstrate this, as if Adam's build and features weren't doing that enough. The Deputy

The Deputy

You are telling me you were born inside the Annex and were part of the research. I understand. Show me what you mean, but do it without damaging yourself or anything around us.

Adam retrieves a fist-sized stone from the clear gravel and tests its weight between his fingers. Facility Manners make the demonstration exact and announced rather than casual; Metered Strength keeps his grip controlled until the result is certain.

He closes his hand. Pressure travels through the stone with a dry, granular crack, and it collapses into several sharp fragments within his palm. Adam opens his fingers over the gravel without cutting himself or scattering the pieces toward the evidence.

The Deputy

The Deputy

All right. That is not ordinary strength, and I believe you are telling me the truth about the research. Do not demonstrate it again near the evidence.
