Rufus Chumwell’s farm sits broken in the dark, its door splintered wide and its yard mashed into churned mud by huge feet. The stink of trolls hangs over everything.

Near the threshold, the Ranger crouches low, fingers tracing the deepest prints. The tracks drive east, away from Bree, toward the black edge of the woods.

The Ranger

The Ranger

They did not linger. They carried the family straight on, and they are not far ahead.

The Smith steps closer to the ruined door, jaw set, eyes fixed on the torn frame as if measuring the blows.

The Smith

The Smith

Then we go now. Every minute gives the trolls more road and the Chumwells less hope.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

I’m going after them. Who’s with me?

The Ranger rises at once, sword ready, and the Smith answers with a hard nod. Ahead, the track vanishes into the dark woods, and the rescue turns from warning to pursuit.

Gwendolyn turns from the broken doorstep and slips her sword away. The blade vanishes with a soft rasp, and her bow is in her hands a heartbeat later.

She steps into the churned mud, follows the deepest prints, and lets the night close around the farm behind her.

The Ranger

The Ranger

Good. Keep the prints in sight, and watch the edges of the dark.

The trail holds firm. Huge tracks bite east through trampled grass and broken fence, pointing straight toward the black trees beyond the farm.

The Smith

The Smith

They were in haste, but not careless. That is a mercy.

Wind combs the yard, carrying away the farm stink little by little. Ahead, the first branches of the woods loom larger with every step.

Gwendolyn reaches the tree line with the others close behind, and the muddy spoor runs on under the boughs, waiting for her next move.

You were not leaving without me, were you?

Randwulf

Gwendolyn steps off the last patch of grass and into the trees. The lane disappears behind her as the dark undergrowth closes around the party, and the troll sign still points east.

The first low bough catches at her shoulder and scrapes a loose leaf from her cloak. Boffo mutters under his breath, and the Smith lifts an arm to keep branches from striking his face.

Randwulf

Randwulf

There. See how the earth breaks inward? They dragged something heavy this way.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Then the trail is ours, if we keep our eyes on it.

Gwendolyn finds the track at her feet, deep enough to hold rain and beast print alike. She has the woods now, but the roots take a strip of mud from her boot as she enters, leaving her footing slick.

They break into a faster pace, boots sucking at mud and roots. Gwendolyn drives the line onward, and the others follow her into a darker bend of the woods.

But the trail changes underfoot. The prints widen, the dragged furrow deepens, and the smell of wet earth gives way to a harsher stink of old meat and smoke.

Then the trees part around a shallow hollow ahead. Broken brush, snapped saplings, and a churned patch of ground mark where the trolls have halted.

Gwendolyn reaches the edge of it with the party close behind, and the hunt stops being a pursuit. It becomes a found place.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Here. Fresh ash. They have been here not long.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

And listen. Voices, ahead of us, through the trees.

The branches ahead tremble with a low, ugly murmur, and the half-hidden hollow waits for Gwendolyn's next move.

"Draw your bows, we advance silently. Follow my lead."

Gwendolyn lifts her sword low and signals the others in a tight sweep, but the hollow answers with a dry crack of twig under boot. The sound seems small, yet it carries far in the hush.

The party freezes at once. Ahead, the murmur of troll voices stops, then shifts, as if one of them has turned to listen.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Too late. They heard that.

Gwendolyn keeps moving anyway, and the dark brush parts just enough to show the truth. The hollow is no dead end, only a broken camp, its far side opening to a narrow cut through the trees.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

There, the path bends behind the rocks. We can still take it if we are quick.

Beyond the cut, a dull orange glimmer winks between trunks, a fire deeper in the wood. The trolls are closer than the trail first promised.

She carefully approaches, taking advantage of available cover.

Gwendolyn lowers her profile and slips from tree shadow to tree shadow, using the broken stone and bramble as cover. The others hold back, barely breathing, while she advances alone toward the orange glimmer.

The path opens behind the rocks exactly where Tuiwen marked it, and the campfire ahead grows clearer through the trunks. Smoke threads upward, thin and crooked, above the dark line of a fallen log.

She reaches the edge of the clearing unseen. A crude troll camp lies below her line of sight, fire at its center, with rough shapes shifting near it.

One shape is not a troll. A hobbit, bound at the wrists, sits slumped near a tree stump, head bowed in the firelight.

Randwulf

Randwulf

There, by the stump. One of them lives.

From deeper in the camp, a troll voice grunts and the firelight lurches as someone heavy turns. Gwendolyn is in position, but the rescue now has a witness and a guard.

"All fire together, on my signal."

Gwendolyn gives the signal, and the line answers at once. Hidden bows and slings snap into action from the brush, all aimed into the firelit hollow.

The first shots crack the quiet. One troll reels back from the stump with a snarling cry, and the camp erupts in confusion.

The bound hobbit jerks upright at the noise, then ducks as the fire spits sparks across the clearing.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Again, now!

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Loose, and keep low.

A second volley flies, but one shaft skims the edge of the stone and snaps. The missed shot skitters into the fire, and the blaze flares bright enough to show the camp to anyone nearby.

The trolls bellow and lurch for cover, but the clearing is theirs no longer. The rescue has begun, and every head in the camp turns toward Gwendolyn's hidden line.

Gwendolyn readies her bow, seeking targets.

Gwendolyn lifts her bow into the firelight, settling it hard against her shoulder. Her first arrow finds the gap between root and stump, and her aim steadies on the trolls before they can regroup.

She draws, holds, and picks a target through the sparks. The bowstring hums tight in her fingers, and the camp suddenly feels smaller, trapped inside her sight.

One troll ducks behind a broken cart, but another stumbles broadside into the open, snarling toward the brush. The bound hobbit stays low, eyes wide above the stump.

Randwulf

Randwulf

There, by the cart. Take him while he is exposed!

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Good. Keep the line. Do not waste the firelight.

A hidden branch snaps somewhere deeper in the dark, and one of the trolls whips its head that way. The clearing is no longer merely a camp, it is a hunted place, and the trail runs straight into the chaos.

Gwendolyn has the shot lined up, and the trolls answer with alarm, crouching between her and the captive. The rescue turns on this instant.

"Yes!" She fires at the exposed troll.

Gwendolyn releases. The arrow flashes through the firelight, strikes the exposed troll high in the chest, and drives it back into the cart with a choking roar.

The impact splits the troll's balance. It slams against the broken wood, and the cart tips hard, spilling a cargo of stolen pots and muddy sacks into the clearing.

One sack bursts open to show hobbit gear, and a fur-lined bundle tumbles free beside the stump, half-hidden in ash.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Good shot! It is driven back, push now!

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

There. Its path to the captive is broken.

The bound hobbit lifts his head at the crash, blinking toward the fallen bundle. For one bright instant, the clearing is theirs.

From deeper in the trees, a second troll bellows and charges toward the fire, drawn straight to the wounded one.

"All on the second one!" She fires at the charging troll (hoping the hobbit, somewhere out of sight, is also firing).

Behind the stumbling troll, the hidden hobbit by the stump scrambles free of cover and shoves a stolen blade toward the dark, as if trying to join the fight from the ground.

Gwendolyn lunges from cover, boots skidding on wet earth as she drives toward the firelit camp. The ground dips treacherously under her, and she catches herself short of the clearing’s center.

The first troll heaves itself upright in the wreckage, bigger than the brush around it, with one arm tangled in splintered cart wood. It swings blindly toward the sound of her rush.

Gwendolyn does not make the clean charge she means to make. She stumbles at the lip of the camp, forced low and off-line, but the slip carries her past the troll’s reach instead of into it.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

The cart is between us.

The broken wheels and scattered boards crack under the troll’s weight, opening a narrow gap along its left side. Beyond that gap, the bound hobbit and the camp’s firelight are both exposed.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Left of the cart, Gwendolyn, it cannot turn fast!

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

The brush gives way there, use it now!

The troll whips its head toward the shouting, and the clearing suddenly feels smaller, the escape route thinner, the next strike tighter than a moment ago.

Gwendolyn slips through the opening the cart has made, low and fast. The troll’s back is turned, all its attention fixed on the brush and the shouted warnings.

Her sword bites in under the shoulder blades. The beast jerks hard, breath punching out of it, and its great arm flails uselessly at the air.

The troll staggers forward into the wreckage, dragging splintered wood with it. Its footing fails, and the campfire throws a wild red flash across the clearing.

For one clear instant, the bound hobbit and the dark gap beyond the cart stand open to sight. The trail does not vanish, it breaks the fight wide apart.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Well struck, Gwendolyn. Hold that opening!

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

It is turning, get past it before it recovers!

The troll twists toward her at last, wounded and enraged, but the camp has shifted. The way through is there now, and the rescue presses into motion.

The beast lurches sideways and slams into the cart again, but the opening stays clear. Beyond it, the bound hobbit flinches into the firelight, free to be reached at last.

The price lands at once, the troll’s twisting jerk tears at Gwendolyn’s wrists, and a sharp sting bites across her palm where the guard scrapes skin.

Randwulf

There, now. Push through!

The wounded troll tries to turn back into the gap, but its own weight drags it off balance. The camp is split open, the rescue route laid bare, and the next move hangs on Gwendolyn's momentum.

The cut across her palm bites deeper as the sword comes down, warm blood slicking her grip. Her hand shakes once, then tightens again.

She hauls once, hard. The stump scrapes forward an inch, then skids crooked in the mud, dragging the captive only enough to make him flinch.

From the dark beyond the broken camp, a low troll grunt rolls closer, still unseen, while ash drifts thicker across the opening.

The hobbit braces both heels and twists against the binding, but the rope only tightens where it catches under the stump. Gwendolyn has one bad snarl of cord, one trapped captive, and the sound of approaching feet in the black.

Below, the foul breath warms into a deeper growl, then falters. The hidden thing does not leap, but it has shown enough to prove the hollow is occupied.

"Time for some magic. Can you blind them with a spell?" She's guessing, but elves do know magic, don't they?

Gwendolyn’s plea hangs over the hollow. Tuiwen leans to the stone lip, then lifts one hand, palm outward, as if feeling for a draft no one else can sense.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

If I blind them, I must do it through the seam, not at the mouth. The stone will not take kindly to a bright spell at this closeness.

Randwulf

Randwulf

And if they hear the shaping, they may come rushing up blind and angry. I do not like either choice.

Tuiwen closes his eyes and breathes once, deep and measured. A thread of pale light gathers between his fingers, then sputters against the cold air and dies in a weak spark.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Too damp. The hollow steals the edge from it.

Randwulf lowers his bow a finger’s breadth, watching the dark opening with a frown. The creature below shifts again, now listening for the failed spell instead of the road above.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

I cannot blind it from here. But I can make one bright flare, if you give me a beat to draw it clean.

"We smoke them out." She gathers some dry sticks.

Gwendolyn crouches at the stone lip and gathers a bundle of dry sticks from the root-shelter below the old stones. The dead wood comes free cleanly, pale against the damp earth.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

These are dry enough to take smoke.

She lifts the kindling into her arms and backs from the hollow, while the dark opening below seems to wait, listening. Randwulf keeps his bow trained on the seam.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Good. Build the smoke quick, and keep your head low. If they bolt, they bolt at us.

Tuiwen kneels and starts arranging the sticks in a shallow heap near the lip, his hand steady now that the spell is set aside. The moonlight catches the dry edges and the old stone alike.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

There. Feed it from the side, not straight down. Let the hollow swallow the rest.

The small stack is ready, and the path is fixed. Below, something in the hollow shifts with a heavier, more impatient scrape, as if the smoke is already being imagined.

Bundle of dry sticks

When the sticks are burning, she tosses them in the hole, then backs away from the entrance.

Gwendolyn flicks the burning sticks into the hollow, but her boot skids on damp stone as she retreats. One ember spins wide, kissing the lip instead of the dark below.

The bundle catches anyway. Orange light gutters up in a breath, then the fire slumps sideways, blocked by wet roots and old stone.

From below comes a sudden cough of smoke, then a harsh scrape and a deeper shuffle, as if something inside has turned its face toward the heat.

Randwulf

Randwulf

It sees the smoke. Back, Gwendolyn, keep away from the edge.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Wait, there. The draft pulls left, under the stone seam. That crack may be the way through.

A thin line of soot creeps from the hollow’s side gap, showing where the smoke vanishes into darkness. The opening is no longer still, and the first hidden path answers the fire.

She gathers more sticks.

Gwendolyn crouches at the stones and rakes for more dry sticks, but the ground gives her almost nothing. Her fingers find only damp twigs, slick leaves, and mud that smears the wound on her hand.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

The soil here is soaked through.

She gathers what little she can, yet the bundle is thin and green. As she rises, the smoke blows back hard in her face and the brittle pile in her arms sags apart.

Randwulf

Randwulf

Enough. The draft is winning. If we feed that fire, it needs proper wood, not this scrap.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

The side crack is drawing it in. Look, the smoke is already gone underground.

A dull cough rolls from the hollow, then the soot seam widens with a hiss. The little flame inside gutters lower, starved by the wet roots and the pull beneath the stones.

The path to a clean smoke-out is failing fast, and the hidden opening now hangs open, smoking, waiting.

Drier sticks may be found lying under the trees, also dead branches. She looks there.

Gwendolyn turns from the sour smoke and scans the shadowed trunks instead. The forest floor yields what the hollow will not, dead limbs, pale bark, and dry sticks hidden beneath fern and root.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

Dead wood. Enough for a hotter fire.

She stoops, gathers a thicker armful, and the brittle branches crack clean in her hands. The weight is good, dry enough to burn.

Randwulf

Randwulf

That will do. Bring it here before the smoke dies completely.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

And quickly. The crack is swallowing the draft, but it is also giving us a path to them.

Gwendolyn lifts the bundle toward the lip of the stones, and the hollow answers with a low, wet cough from below. The fire still clings, waiting for fuel.

She lights her fire.

Gwendolyn feeds the dry branches into the weak flame. The fire catches at once, a thin tongue becoming a hard orange blaze beneath the stones.

Heat rolls up the rock face, and the smoke thins, then darts into the side crack in a steady pull. The hollow below answers with a deeper, angry rumble.

Randwulf

Randwulf

There, now it has a mouth to breathe through.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

And the things below have noticed. Listen.

From under the old stones comes scraping, then a wet grunt, then the sound of something heavy shifting in a tight space.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

The crack is drawing it straight toward us.

The fire holds, bright now, and its light licks the seam in the stones. The dark opening no longer feels empty.

A shadow moves behind the crack, and the first shape presses close enough to cast a blunt outline on the smoke.

She backs away, drawing her bow.

Gwendolyn slides back from the lip of the stones, boots scraping gravel, and the bow comes up in the same breath. The fire throws hard light across her face as she clears the seam.

The dark shape inside the crack surges closer, filling the slit with a blunt shoulder and a breath of hot, sour air.

Randwulf

Randwulf

There it is. Hold the line.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

It is coming out, by force or by fear.

Gwendolyn reaches full draw, arrow leveled at the opening. Behind her, the smoke twists tighter, as if the stones themselves are sucking.

For a heartbeat, the hillside seems to choose. Then the shape inside the crack shifts again, and the seam widens with a dry grind of stone.
