The Messenger
I have brought you this far, and that must serve. Bree is behind me, the dark ahead, and I will not be meat for trolls tonight.
He jerks his trembling hand toward Staddle, then backs away from the gate, boots slipping in the churned mud.

Gwendolyn
Then go, and warn Bree if more fear comes with the dawn.
The Messenger flinches at Gwendolyn’s words, gives a frightened nod, and turns heel for the town lights.

The Ranger
The trail does not wait. Every moment the captives are farther from us.

The Smith
Aye. Let the road to Staddle be ours, and the trolls can learn what steel answers.
Moonlight gleams on their drawn weapons as the gouged earth points east, into the black hush beyond Bree.
“Gwendolyn expects to find no trolls between Bree and Staddle. The attack was on Staddle, not here. She flies fearlessly down the road to the village.”
