Olvin's Day Out

Olvin reaches his home through the residential streets without trouble. The door closes behind him, shutting out Neo Arca’s traffic and the lingering smells of the walkway.

The familiar entryway is quiet and orderly. He sets the secured grocery bag down briefly, keeping the rune stone in hand as he checks the empty room.

With the apartment still silent, Olvin carries the groceries into the kitchen. The refrigerator hums steadily while sunlight rests across the clean counter.

He puts the chilled prepared meal away first, then shelves the fruit, bread, and remaining items. The sturdy paper bag folds flat beside the recycling.

Ordinary domestic sounds replace the mall’s bustle: a cupboard closing, glass shifting, and the soft click of the refrigerator door settling shut.

As Olvin finishes, a small notification chime sounds from somewhere near the entryway. The apartment returns to silence, leaving its source waiting to be checked.

Olvin retrieves an ordinary stool from the kitchen, carries it to the entryway, and wedges it beneath the door handle for extra security.

He steps onto the stool carefully, bringing his eye level to the peephole. The hallway appears in its small warped circle of glass.

A young adult woman in a blue delivery jacket stands outside, holding a padded envelope against her hip. Her dark braid rests over one shoulder, and a handheld scanner glows in her other hand.

The worker waits on the hallway mat without touching the handle, glancing once at her scanner and then toward the quiet apartment door.

Olvin steps down from the stool, sets it against the entryway wall, and checks that the handle is clear. He opens the door only as far as needed.

The delivery worker extends the padded envelope without crossing the threshold. Its printed label bears Olvin’s name and apartment address, while the hallway remains quiet behind her.

Olvin accepts the envelope from her and keeps it close, the paper surface firm beneath his fingers. The worker lowers her scanner once the transfer registers.

She steps back from the doorway, giving him space rather than lingering. The envelope is now in Olvin’s possession, unopened, with the apartment door still under his control.

The delivery worker reaches the stairwell and disappears from view. Olvin closes the apartment door, checks the latch, and slides the stool back beneath the handle.

He carries the padded envelope to the kitchen counter and turns it over. The sealed edge resists his fingers, so he uses a rune stone’s hard corner as a cutter.

The improvised tool opens the envelope, but the paper slips and nicks the pad of his thumb. A bright bead of blood stains the label before he presses it against a clean towel.

Inside is a folded property-management notice and a small plastic access fob in a clear sleeve. The notice bears the building’s logo and Olvin’s apartment number.

The notice explains that exterior entry fobs will be updated this week, and the enclosed fob replaces his old one. A testing date is printed beneath the instructions.

The apartment stays quiet around him, but the new fob and scheduled testing leave an ordinary errand waiting inside the envelope’s opened padding.

Olvin grumbles under his breath, pockets the notice, and carries the new access fob downstairs. The cut on his thumb remains shallow and cleanly covered.

The building lobby is quiet, with afternoon light falling across the mailboxes and the glass exterior door. Olvin holds the fob against the reader beside the entrance.

The reader flashes green and gives a soft confirming chirp. The lock releases immediately, and the door swings inward without resistance.

A second light on the reader displays the fob number and the current date before returning to its normal standby glow. The replacement is fully registered.

The building manager, wearing a charcoal cardigan over a white shirt, with a lined face and round glasses, an elderly man with a narrow frame and silver hair, stands behind the lobby desk with a clipboard. He gives Olvin a brief approving nod.
