The nebula dissolves into cold, stale air. Wolfie collapses onto the splintered floorboards, his enchanted robes rustling as he hits the debris of his cottage. The star-silk cushion, impossibly soft and glowing with a faint lunar pulse, rests cradled in his arms. Outside, the rhythmic, heavy thud of boots against the dirt path signals the Magistrate's guards closing in on the entrance.

Wolfie
Ah. Home, such as it is. Could have been quieter.
He sighs, his eyes tracing the hole in the wall where the rift had been. The cottage is a wreck, but the air no longer ripples with chaotic void-magic. He stands, clutching his prize tight, and eyes the small cellar hatch hidden beneath a pile of shattered roof tiles. It is time to vacate the premises before the guards find their courage.

Wolfie
If I slip out through the cellar, I might reach the Whispering Woods by dawn. That, or I simply nap until they tire themselves out. No, the woods sound much more comfortable.
He pries the hatch open, the wood groaning in protest as he prepares to descend into the cool, dark crawlspace beneath the floor.

Star-silk cushion
“check out that cushion, kinda cool I brought it out of a dream”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Wolfie
The fabric hums against my skin. It is not just soft. It is vibrating with the trapped essence of a thousand nebulas. I can feel the lunar pulse syncing with my own heartbeat. It is heavy, like holding a condensed piece of the midnight sky.
Wolfie runs a thumb over the cushion, and for a fleeting second, the ruined cottage walls seem to shimmer, turning translucent as if he were still anchored to that pocket dimension. The moonlight filtering through the splintered roof catches the star-silk, scattering brilliant, swirling patterns of violet and silver across the dark cellar entrance.

Wolfie
Forget gold. This is going to make the most magnificent pillow for the rest of my life.
A loud, splintering crack echoes from the front door as the Magistrate’s men smash a heavy iron ram against the wood. The floorboards shake. Dust rains down from the rafters. Wolfie ducks his head, clutching the glowing cushion, and pivots toward the dark, yawning maw of the cellar hatch.

Escape through the cellar hatch
“Down then”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Wolfie moves with unnatural fluid grace. As the cottage groans under the weight of the iron ram, he slides across the buckling floorboards, vanishing into the darkness of the cellar hatch before the wood even fully splinters. He hits the stone steps at the bottom with the silence of a shadow, the star-silk cushion tucked securely against his chest.

Wolfie
That was almost too easy. Maybe the gods of naps are finally smiling upon me.
Above, the ceiling joists scream in protest. A heavy boot crashes through the floorboards, splintering the spot where Wolfie stood only seconds prior. Dirt and debris rain down into the cellar, illuminated by the dying violet glow of the cushion. The heavy oak door of the hatch above begins to tilt, caught by the shifting floor. A rough, muffled shout echoes from the room above, followed by the clatter of armored men crowding into the narrow space.

Escape into the Whispering Woods
“*Wolfie always weirdly felt home in strange woods like these*”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Wolfie
Great, they found the cellar. If I stay here, I become a pincushion for their crossbows.
Wolfie moves with liquid speed, darting past the central support pillar. He taps his enchanted robe, flickering into a faint, translucent blur that masks his presence from the guards peering through the hatch.

Wolfie
The secret tunnel exit is just behind that tapestry. If I can reach it without sneezing, I am home free.

Guard Captain
He went down here! Check the shadows, men. That sorcerer has a trick for every turn.
Wolfie reaches the rear wall, his fingers brushing the cold stone as he slides behind the moth-eaten curtain. A hidden latch clicks under his thumb, revealing the damp, moss-scented path leading into the Whispering Woods.

Wolfie
The woods are calling. Finally, a chance for a nap that does not involve splintering wood or angry soldiers. Should I seal the tunnel behind me, or leave a little surprise for them to stumble over?
