The Watery Crossing
Vethseris
Vethseris

Vethseris enters from the pleasure-house galleries carrying a slate of names and offices. Her measured stride holds unmistakable resolve: the eastern foundation will become a living settlement, not an abandoned shell.

Two lesser demons remain stationed at the eastern wing, while the cloaked emissary watches from her guarded room. Vhaziel has gone ahead with the watery crossing toward the inner gallery.

Vethseris

Vethseris

You follow my sovereign without a name, a house, or an office. By what right would you influence a settlement whose positions remain unfilled?

The Bodiless Voice

The Bodiless Voice

I claim no office. I remember the road that gave me shape, and I warn against choices that could cause the eastern foundation to reject its own crossings.

The translucent figure pauses beside the amber route-lines. Vethseris unfolds her list, where candidate names and duties surround a small symbol copied from the foundation archive.

The Cloaked Emissary

The Cloaked Emissary

That mark was in Lillith’s warning before the crossing took form. Your list has found the same sign. Do not appoint anyone until you learn what it recognizes.

Then it is not merely a candidate’s office I must shape. It is the settlement’s first law. I will bring this symbol before Vhaziel and demand a proper place for it in our records.

“I look to Seris, as I open the letter and begin reading its contents. "She is a slime that gained sentience from the crossing's opening. Sufficient magic can awaken a lower being, it's not unheard of. Don't dismiss her lightly, she may be of importance. Remember, each of you Arch-Temptresses came into your importance through connection to the sanctums you now hold dominion over." I say, glancing up from the reading. "Like this new Sanctum, she is yet unfinished in her awakening, I find that as more than simple coincidence." I then look down to continue reading. "And Seris, your dominion is over the Pleasure-house sanctum, this new sanctum does not yet have laws governing it, do not assume you can errantly place law upon a sanctum you do not have dominion over."”

Vhaziel looks to Vethseris and breaks the black seal. The letter opens cleanly beneath the circlet’s steadying influence, its ink rearranging into a clear account of the eastern foundation’s unfinished awakening.

Vhaziel

Vhaziel

She is a slime that gained sentience from the crossing’s opening. Sufficient magic can awaken a lower being, so do not dismiss her lightly. Each Arch-Temptress came into importance through connection to the sanctum she now governs.

Foundation Lore identifies the letter’s mark as a lawful awakening clause, not an intrusion. Consent Reading finds no concealed demand in the watery crossing’s warning, while Sovereign Decree makes Vhaziel’s interpretation binding.

Vhaziel

Vhaziel

Like this new sanctum, she is unfinished in her awakening. I find that more than simple coincidence. The letter confirms the crossing formed when the foundation joined our network.

Feared Reputation makes the gallery tense and the letter’s edges darken, but Innate Spellcasting reinforces the written meaning. The sealed message yields its final line: the new being may become the foundation’s first lawful voice.

Vhaziel

Vhaziel

And Seris, your dominion is over the pleasure-house sanctum. This new sanctum has no laws yet. Do not errantly place law upon a sanctum you do not govern.

Vethseris

Vethseris

Understood, sovereign. I will not appoint its keeper or impose its laws. I will record the crossing’s claim for your judgment, then confine my authority to the pleasure-house.

“I nod, giving her a soft smile. "Good, my Dear. I am happy to see that you are becoming more assertive, even if this was the wrong moment for it." I say, before folding the letter, looking to the watery form. "Tell me, what is it you desire?"”

Good, my dear. I am happy to see you becoming more assertive, even if this was the wrong moment for it.

Vhaziel folds the letter and turns her soft smile toward the watery crossing. Innate Spellcasting warms her question, Trustworthy Bearing makes its welcome plain, and Consent Reading confirms the request is voluntary.

Vhaziel

Tell me, what is it you desire?

The black stone circlet steadies the amber lines and draws the crossing’s answer forward, but Feared Reputation darkens the invitation. Her Persuasion reaches it, then catches on the fear surrounding her sovereignty.

Avarra

Avarra

I desire return, recognition, and release. No, I desire a house. No, I desire nothing that would make me separate from the road.

Its translucent body divides into three wavering silhouettes before collapsing together. The failed answer leaves its desire unresolved but makes one truth unavoidable: it cannot become a lawful voice until it chooses which longing defines it.

Learn whether the watery crossing can become the foundation's lawful voice

“I shake my head. "That time has already passed, the moment you started walking on your own you were separate from the road. Though, i can understand your confusion, you were just born, after all." I say, sitting back. I can recognise you and release you, though that is counter to you wanting to be close to your path and the sanctum it connects to. The closest I can do for you is to offer you a place as Arch-Temptress of the new sanctum, as it becomes complete, in time, you could find purpose within it." I purr. "Though for that, I would need to know your true desire, think carefully, for there is a price to the power I can grant your desire."”

That time has already passed. The moment you started walking on your own, you became separate from the road. You were just born, after all.

Vhaziel shakes her head and settles back. The watery crossing’s three wavering silhouettes draw together as she offers recognition and release, then names the nearest path: Arch-Temptress of the new sanctum.

Vhaziel

Vhaziel

I can recognise you and release you, though that would oppose your wish to remain close to your path and the sanctum it connects to. I can offer you the new sanctum’s Arch-Temptress office as it becomes complete. In time, you could find purpose within it.

Innate Spellcasting gives the offer a warm, resonant shape, while Consent Reading confirms the crossing’s uncertainty is genuine. Trustworthy Bearing keeps release and appointment plainly voluntary; Sovereign Decree establishes the office as a real lawful choice.

Vhaziel

Vhaziel

For that, I need your true desire. Think carefully. There is a price to the power I can grant you.

Feared Reputation darkens the invitation, but the black stone circlet steadies the crossing’s records, and Lillith’s pendant warms against Vhaziel’s throat. The pressure clarifies the bargain instead of concealing its cost.

Avarra

Avarra

Then I choose the house. I will become its Arch-Temptress, remain joined to the road that gave me shape, and discover my purpose within the sanctum. I accept the price, once you name it.

The amber route-lines accept the declaration. The watery crossing gains a recognized place in the eastern foundation’s awakening, and the offered pact now stands ready for its price to be spoken.
