Paul has dressed himself and stands sore but steady in Chenevix-Trench’s rooms. The housemaster remains behind his desk, while the belt lies out of sight and the closed notebook rests beneath his hand.

Anthony Chenevix-Trench
You may return to the dormitory, Foot. Walk normally, and do not turn this dismissal into another incident.
Before Paul reaches the door, it opens. A young servant, a slight boy in a brown waistcoat and white shirt, stands in the passage with flushed cheeks and a folded napkin tucked beneath one arm.

Young Servant
Beg pardon, sir. The refectory says Foot’s place at supper has been changed. I was told to bring him there directly.
The servant remains by the threshold, neither entering farther nor leaving. His eyes flick toward Paul, then back to Chenevix-Trench, waiting for obedience or refusal.

Anthony Chenevix-Trench
You heard him, Foot. The refectory has altered your place. Decide whether you will follow the instruction, but understand that I am observing your choice.
The young servant steps aside to make room. Chenevix-Trench watches from the desk, offering no escort and no further explanation, while the corridor beyond leads toward the supper bell.
